Trap is a musical genre that has become popular in recent years, especially among young people.
22
It is a style characterized by the use of electronic beats and the com-
bination of instruments such as synthesizer and drum machine. The
lyrics focus on topics such as money, drugs and sex, in an urban and
street context.
Among the best known singers and artists in this genre are Central Cee,
Plaiboy Carti, 21 Sauvage, Travis Scott, Lil Uzi Vert, among others. It is
important to note that trap has evolved over the years, giving rise to
sub-genres such as Latin trap, which fuses elements of hip-hop with La-
tin music, and has managed to break language barriers and reach a wider
audience.
ORIGINS
21
Trap is a musical genre that has its origins in the 1990s
in the southern United States, specifically in Atlanta
(Georgia). It developed from a combination of influences
from hip-hop, rap, crunk and electronic music.
The term “trap” comes from the slang used in Atlanta’s
urban communities, where “trap” refers to places where
illegal drugs are sold and consumed. Trap music emerged
as an artistic expression that portrayed the reality of
the streets, violence, poverty and life in the slums.
One of the first exponents of trap was rapper and music
producer T.I. with his album “Trap Muzik” released in 2003.
This album helped popularize the genre and set the so-
nic foundation for trap, including heavy beats, dark syn-
thesizers and lyrics about life on the streets.
As trap developed, artists such as Gucci Mane, Young Jeezy and Waka Flocka Flame beca-
me prominent figures in the genre, bringing their music to a wider audience. These artists
used electronic beats, deep bass and lyrics loaded with violence, drugs and the flaunting
of wealth.
In the 2010s, trap experienced an explosion of popularity worldwide thanks to artists such
as Future, Migos and Rae Sremmurd, who fused trap with elements of pop and mainstream
rap, achieving a more accessible and commercial sound.
Trap also spread to Latin Ame-
rica, especially in countries
20
such as Puerto Rico and the
Dominican Republic, where ar-
tists such as Daddy Yankee
and Don Omar fused reggaeton
with elements of trap, creating
what is known as “Latin trap”.
Today, trap continues to
evolve and diversify, merging
with other genres and experi-
menting with new styles and
sounds. It has gained enor-
mous popularity in the music
industry, and its influences
can be found in the music of ar-
tists from different genres and
styles around the world.
