Welcome to iNews / bringing you the eye of the news // I’m Velin Ardian / and today we
explore one of the most pressing issues in the digital age // the ethical challenges of
artificial intelligence / in shaping the future of our youth //
As artificial intelligence continues to evolve at an unprecedented pace / it is reshaping the
way young people learn /communicate / and think // From AI-powered educational
platforms / to social media algorithms that influence opinions and behavior / the presence
of AI in youth’s daily life is undeniable //
But as the technology advances / experts are raising serious ethical concerns // Is AI
helping to create a brighter / smarter generation // or is it leading us into a future where
critical thinking / privacy / and independence are at risk? //
Many educational systems around the world have welcomed AI tools into classrooms//
Programs like intelligent tutoring systems and personalized learning apps / are designed
to help students learn faster and more efficiently// However/ these tools often rely on data
collection/ / including sensitive information about students’ habits/ preferences/ and even
emotions// Without strict regulation / this data can be misused / raising concerns about
digital privacy and consent/ especially for minors // A report by UNESCO emphasizes
the need to balance technological advancement with the safeguarding of student privacy
and security//
Social media is another powerful area where AI's influence is growing //
Recommendation algorithms decide what young users see / often prioritizing content
that’s engaging / but not always educational or mentally healthy// This can lead to echo
chambers/ exposure to harmful content / and even addiction to screen time// A study
published in the American Journal of Law & Medicine / highlights the link between
social media algorithms and increased mental health issues among adolescents / including
poor body image and suicidality//
Beyond the digital experience / AI is also starting to play a role in college admissions /
job recruitment / and even mental health assessments // While these systems are meant to
be objective / studies have shown that many AI models reflect the biases found in the
data they’re trained on // This can result in discrimination/ especially against students
from marginalized backgrounds // Research from Cornell University found that AI-
generated college admissions essays tend to resemble those written by socio-
economically privileged male applicants/ potentially reinforcing existing inequalities//
UNESCO and other global organizations have emphasized the need for ethical AI
governance // They urge developers and governments to ensure that AI is transparent fair/
and accountable especially when used in systems that impact youth // Schools parents /
and students themselves must be aware of how AI works / and what its potential risks
are // UNESCO has developed AI competency frameworks to help countries support
students and teachers in understanding both the potential and risks of AI//
Despite the challenges / AI also presents powerful opportunities // It can bridge gaps in
education / assist students with disabilities/ / and prepare youth for future careers in
science and technology// // But to harness this potential safely / the focus must shift from
Can we use AI? / to Should we and how do we use it responsibly? //
The future of our youth depends not just on innovation / but on ethical decision-
making // As we teach students to work alongside machines / we must also teach them to
think critically about the tools they use // Because in the end / technology should serve
humanity / not the other way around //
That’s all for today’s report / Stay aware // stay thoughtful / and let’s work together to
build a future where ethics and innovation go hand in hand // I’m Velin Ardian / and this
is iNews / bringing you the eye of the news // Thank you for watching / and see you next
time //
