Post Graduate Course in Food & Nutrition

The Women’s College, Calcutta Department of Food & Nutrition First Start Post Graduation course under
Calcutta University. The department has got the affiliation for regular Post Graduate Course from
University of Calcutta in August 2016. The whole hearted support from the Principal Dr. Mahua Das, the
college authority and all colleagues and good wishes from different corners of the society always inspired
the department for such a beginning. The course is running successfully last 7 years.

VISION :

The Department of Food & Nutrition Serves International, National, Regional and Local
Communities through discovery of the ways in which Foods and their Bio active components contribute
to health and the prevention of Disease and through effective application of Nutrition knowledge to
improve Human health and well being.

MISSION :

 Contributing to the fundamental Knowledge of how nutrients and food components function at
Cellular, Systematic and whole body levels and impact human health and Disease.
 Delivering Innovative, Research based interventions and service Programmes which alter meal
patterns and Food Choices with the Goal of Improved Health of Individuals, families and
Communities.
 Contributing to the knowledge base of Nutrition under graduate and Graduate Student through
High Quality Teaching, Training and research Mentorship.
 Providing Service to Professional , Governmental and Local Community Organization.

Admission Procedure

 Thirty Seats are allotted in each year.


 As per C.U. norms candidates passed B.Sc. Exam. With Food & Nutrition Honours under any
University can apply.
 Admission in 60% of the seats will be from C.U. students only, on the basis of marks obtained in
B.Sc. (Hons.) examination.
 40% of the seats will be opened for students of all the universities including C.U. and the admission
in these seats will be through an admission test.
 Admission test will be held on Honours Syllabus of C.U. with multiple choice questions of 100
marks.
 Reservation of seats will as per rule.
 The above rules may changed if any change would be there in the C.U. norms.
 From 2018 Calcutta University admission Process is centralized Admission Process .
Some essential information about the Post Graduate course in Food & Nutrition

 Duration of the course is two years with four semesters.


 Semester 1&2 will be completed in 1st year and 3&4 in 2nd year.
 Total marks of the course is 1000.
 Marks division - 200 for written examination and 50 for Practical Examination.
 The written examinations will be held in January for the 1st& 3rd Semester and on July for the 2nd&
4th Semester.
 To get Master of Science (M.Sc) degree and to appear in the examinations 75% attendance in the
classes is must. Pass marks in the examinations is 40%. The students securing 60% of the total
1000 marks will get 1st class.

Course Fee

 Rs. 18000/- is to be paid as course fee for each semester . i.e. the total fees will be Rs. 72,000/-
excluding Examination Fees.

Library

The department of Food & Nutrition has a collection of near about 1000 books . For the Post
Graduate Course library has been extended with the separate book lending system only for Post
Graduate students. The students regularly collect text and reference books necessary for their
syllabus. Number of these books is sufficient and it will be increased more and more as per
requirements.

Co-operation of Office Staff & Library

The entire office stuff of the college always help the department under the leadership of the
Head Clerk Sajal Das for smooth running of the Post Graduate Course. Sri Ajoy Kumar Dey, Smt.
Pinky Saha Roy and Smt. Sankhamala Datta have been attached for the management of the
course. Librarian Smt. Lopamudra Dey (Dutta) helped much to build up separate P.G. Library.
