DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH
ENGLISH PROJECT
2025-2026
Students are to submit handwritten projects only
Deadline: 20th June 2025
DRAMA:
1. Explore how Mark Antony’s funeral speech in Act 3, Scene 2 serves as a
powerful rhetorical counter to Brutus's earlier justification of Caesar's
assassination. What persuasive techniques does Antony use, and how do
they expose the fragility of public opinion and the theme of political
manipulation?
2. Examine the dramatic consequences of Caesar’s assassination as
depicted in Act 3. How does this event alter the moral landscape of the
play, and in what ways do the reactions of the conspirators and the Roman
public reflect the larger themes of betrayal and honour?
POETRY:
1. Longfellow’s ‘Haunted Houses’ can also be read as a piece of reflective
prose. How does the speaker's meditation on empty houses become a
metaphor for the human mind and memory? In what ways does this
symbolic layering evoke a mood of quiet introspection and emotional
depth?
2. Both the poems ‘A Considerable Speck’ and ‘Haunted Houses’ engage
with the idea of presence whether physical, intellectual, or spiritual.
Compare how each poet explores the unseen or unnoticed forces that
shape human experience and perception.
PROSE:
1. In the story ‘With the Photographer’, Leacock humorously critiques
society’s obsession with appearance and perfection, prompting readers to
reflect on deeper themes of identity and conformity. Have you ever felt
pressured to look a certain way or to change how you appear to others?
How does the story make you think about the difference between how we
see ourselves and how others want us to appear? Use direct quotes from
the story to support your analysis.
2. In William Sleator’s short story 'Elevator,' the confined space of the
mysterious elevator becomes a powerful symbol of the human psyche’s
confrontation with fear and the unknown, illustrating how curiosity can both
propel us forward and threaten to trap us. Use direct quotes from the story
to support your analysis.
