Internship Policy, Evaluation of Student’s Internship and Feedback

GCET’s conviction is internships provide an integrative and experiential learning opportunity

for students. Internship also serves as a professional exploration in which the student has
opportunity to explore in an industry prior to making a career decision. The intent is to
provide the student an opportunity to observe and participate in an applied experience that is
mutually beneficial to both the student and the participating business entity. Accordingly, the
institution has made it mandatory for every student should undergo internship during the
summer recess after the second year second semester and before the commencement of third
year first semester and allocated two credits for a minimum duration of four weeks of
internship. This policy document brings consistency across departments by establishing
general guidelines and baseline standards for the approval, registration, and supervision of
internships along with relevant tasks, duties, responsibilities, learning objectives, and work
hours required to earn academic credits.

In most instances, internships shall need to be carried out in work settings outside the
campus, and in all cases, they shall relate to the academic major or career objectives of the
student. All internships must conform to the following general requirements:
 Internships shall be centered around practical experience. Background reading and
ongoing writing projects provide theory for and reflection on the experience. Since
internships are designed to meet genuine needs in both public and private sectors as well
as society, accordingly the internship project must be carried out.
 An internship should be a new experience based on a definite educational goal. Therefore,
a student should not obtain internship credit for trivial task.
 Students should register for their internship course during the fourth semester of their UG
engineering program. Credits cannot be awarded for work already completed earlier. The
completed internship form is required before registration can be processed.
All internships will conform to the following guidelines:
 Student standing - Students must have completed their second year second semester or
about to complete the same.
 Contact hours required - The internship experience involves 120 hours of field experience
for the two credits being earned over a minimum of four-week duration.
 Reading assignments - It should have a specific reading assignment that provides
theoretical background for the experience.
 Meetings - A minimum of four meetings between the intern’s supervisor at the institution,
the intern once at the beginning second at the conclusion of the internship, the third
before the submission of the internship report and the fourth before the or during the
presentation of the internship, during which the supervisor at the industry shall participate
in two meetings once in the initial stage and another at the final stage of the internship.
 Writing assignments - The first assignment should record the learning process (journal,
log, observation, report, etc.) and the second is the report (10-12 pages) that helps the
student to reflect on the total internship experience and what was learned.
 Grade - The grade is to be based on a written evaluative report from the industry
Supervisor, faculty observations and/or meetings with the student, the quality of the
written work submitted by the student and the presentation of the same.
