PRAYER

MANUAL

PRAYER
1
Do you find prayer intimidating?
It doesn’t have to be. Prayer can be a wonderful experience if we know how to pray God’s way. The
fact that you are reading this manual on Prayer says you are interested in prayer. Prayer is simply a
conversation with God, just talking with God, talking with your Father, your daddy. When we talk to
someone as close as our Father, we share it all. We share our fears, frustrations, our heart’s desires,
the good, the bad and the ugly. God hears us when we pray and He answers our prayers. He loves
to hear from us, He is always available to us, and He is even waiting for us. We are to come to Him
humbly, but also boldly.

Humbly because we know we don’t deserve to, boldly because God tells us to.

What does humbly and boldly mean?

According to the dictionary humbly means not proud or haughty; not arrogant or assertive. Boldly
means not hesitating or fearful in the face of actual or possible danger or rebuff; courageous and
daring: a bold hero.

So how do we put these two things together, humbly, and boldly?

They almost sound like they contradict each other. We come before Him boldly because of who HE
is not who we are. We are who we are because of Him. We are nothing without Him. Know that we
can come before Him humbly but with great boldness (in Him). His ways are perfect, His ways are
not our ways. We need to yield to His ways. He always answers our prayers. It might be yes, no or
not yet. He is never farther than a prayer away.

So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and
we will find grace to help us when we need it most. Hebrews 4:16 (NLT)

Ask boldly, believingly, without a second thought. James 1:6 (The Message)

And we are confident that he hears us whenever we ask for anything that pleases him. And
since we know he hears us when we make our requests, we also know that he will give us what
we ask for. 1 John 5:14-15 (NLT)

I will answer them before they even call to me. While they are still talking about their needs, I
will go ahead and answer their prayers! Isaiah 65:24 (NLT)

For this reason I am telling you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe (trust and be confident)
that it is granted to you, and you will [get it]. Mark 11:24 (Amplified)

Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest
prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results. James 5:16 (NLT)

For where two or three gather together as my followers,

I am there among them. Matthew 18:20 (NLT)

2
HOW TO PRAY
Fortunately for us, God shows us how to pray in the Bible, His Word. The Bible teaches us to pray
any way, any time, any place and about anything. Nothing is too big or too small for God. God sees
our hearts. He is not critiquing our prayers. He is not looking at how you pray; He is looking at your
heart, he is looking for a true and pure heart. He loves to hear us pray. He is compassionate about
us.

I pray with all my heart; answer me, Lord! I will obey your decrees. Psalm 119:145 (NLT)

The disciples asked Jesus to help them know how to pray. If the disciples ask for help why wouldn’t
we ask for help?
Lord teach us to pray…. Luke 11:1 (NLT)

We know Jesus went away to be alone with His Father to pray. If Jesus, the Son of God took time to
pray, to be alone with His Father don’t you think we should? He went away early in the morning…..
before daybreak…. into the wilderness…. we need to follow His example.

The next morning Jesus awoke long before daybreak and went out alone into the wilderness to
pray. Mark 1:35 (NLT)

SALVATION PRAYER

How do we pray to ask Jesus into our hearts?

There is no exact prayer to say to ask Jesus into our hearts, He knows everything about us, He knows
what we are thinking. He looks at our hearts. If we have the privilege of praying with someone to
accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior, how do we do that? Here is a very simple prayer that you can
change or customize to fit the circumstances:

Lord to the best of my ability I want to ask you to come into my heart. I don’t
know exactly what that means but I have been trying to do it on my own and I
know I can’t. I need You. I know Lord you died on the cross for my sins and I want
to ask you to forgive me and take control of my life.

3
How do we lead someone to ask Jesus into their heart?

You can pray a salvation prayer for yourself or you can pray it with someone else and have them
repeat after you or have them pray silently along with you if they choose.

CONFIDENTIALITY

Confidentiality is so important!! As a representative of Jesus Christ and your Church, you will have
the privilege in the Prayer Ministry to hear very private information. With that privilege, you must
hold confidentiality. When you receive a prayer request, you are obligated to keep that information
private, confidential.

People trust us, their church, with their prayers. This is a privilege we have as part of the Prayer
Team. We need to be wise and considerate with their information. We cannot share this
information with anyone.

What information is considered confidential?

• ALL prayer requests!!

What are the Exceptions?

• Information that you have received permission to share

• Information that involves suicidal or homicidal threats and/or behavior
• Information that the law requires to be reported

You may be asked to pass on information to the church staff or other ministry leaders.

When in doubt, ask for permission before sharing ANY information.

If you get a prayer request that mentions thoughts or intentions of harming themselves or others –
notify the staff immediately.

INTERCESSORY PRAYER
There is nothing that makes us love a man so much as praying for him. --William Law

What is Intercessory Prayer?

Intercessory prayer is basically praying for others. An intercessor is one who takes the place of
another or pleads another's case. This is when we come to God on behalf of another or others who
desperately need God's intervention.

God never gives us discernment in order that we may criticize, but that we may intercede. --
Oswald Chambers

Why Do We Pray?

Prayer is part of becoming more like Christ. Let’s look at what His Word says about prayer.

Some people pray just to pray and some people pray to know God. --Andrew Murray

Prayer was modeled for us by Christ.

Jesus took the time to show his followers how to pray. Here are some examples based on scripture in
Matthew 6: 5-15.

When you pray, don't be like those show-offs who love to stand up and pray in the meeting
5

places and on the street corners. They do this just to look good. I can assure you that they
already have their reward. 6When you pray, go into a room alone and close the door. Pray to
your Father in private. He knows what is done in private, and he will reward you.

When you pray, don't talk on and on as people do who don't know God. They think God likes to
hear long prayers. 8Don't be like them. Your Father knows what you need before you ask. 9You
should pray like this: Our Father in heaven, help us to honor your name.

Come and set up your kingdom, so that everyone on earth will obey you, as you are obeyed in
10

heaven. 11Give us our food for today. 12Forgive us for doing wrong, as we forgive others. 13Keep
us from being tempted and protect us from evil.

14 If you forgive others for the wrongs they do to you, your Father in heaven will forgive you.
15
But if you don't forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins. (Matthew 6:10-15)

5
The scripture makes it very clear that we are to pray alone with God and not for the benefit of others
seeing us or knowing, so that we will get our reward from God and not man.

We are not to pray ritual prayers or prayers with big words. We are to simply talk to our Father in
Heaven.

He even gives us an example of how to pray. (Verses 10-13)

Then He tells us we must forgive others if we want Him to forgive us, that is very clear. We must
forgive over and over, not just once. It does not say we must trust those who hurt us but we are
commanded to forgive. We have a choice. Are we going to be obedient, now that we know just what
to do? (Verses 14-15)

Then Peter came up to Him and said, Lord, how many times may my brother sin against me and
I forgive him and let it go? [As many as] up to seven times? Jesus answered him, I tell you, not
up to seven times, but seventy times seven! Matthew 18: 21-22 (AMP)

Jesus’ final words on earth were a prayer:

Jesus called out with a loud voice, "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit." When he had
said this, he breathed his last. Luke 23:46 (NIV)

Prayer brings pleasure to God:

He delights in the prayers of the upright. Proverbs 15:8b (NLT)

COMMITMENT TO PRAYER
Are you willing to commit to prayer? Do you need to commit? If you are, I promise your life will be
changed. God loves it when we pray, when we talk to Him. Think about it, we commit our life to the
Lord and ask Him to take control of our life and then we don’t even talk to Him? How is He going to
guide us without us connecting to Him? How long do we need to commit to prayer?
Daily? For an hour a day? Once a week? God says pray continually. Just as we would talk to
someone we wanted to get to know better, we need to talk to God. If we want Him to be our power
source, we need to plug into Him.

We need to take time daily, as well as pray consistently throughout the day. Commitment does not
just happen on its own. We need to discipline ourselves to spend time with God.

When should we pray? We should pray in all circumstances. When the circumstances seem
impossible, we need to pray. If we do not understand, we need to pray. If we want to be more like
Christ, we need to pray. When we are tempted, we need to pray. We need to take everything to our
Lord in prayer, no matter how big or small—He cares.

6
Accustom yourself gradually to carry Prayer into all your daily occupation—speak, act, work in
peace, as if you were in prayer, as indeed you ought to be. --François Fénelon

Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the
spirit is willing, but the body is weak! Matthew 26:41 (NLT)

Prayer is not a reason to stop doing anything, prayer is a way of saying, God what do I do. Lord this is
your problem show me what to do.

I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God’s power for us
who believe him. This is the same mighty power that raised Christ from the dead
and seated him in the place of honor at God’s right hand in the heavenly realms.
Ephesians 1: 19-20 (NLV)

Never stop praying. 1 Thessalonians 5:17 (NLT)

Praying Scripture

It is wonderful to pray scriptures. To do this you personalize the scripture by either adding your
name or the name of whom you are praying for. Here are some examples based on the scripture in
Psalm 91, Verses 1-3.

1Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty. 2
This I declare about the LORD: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I
trust him. 3 For he will rescue you from every trap and Protect you from deadly disease.
Psalm 91:1-3 (NLT)

Example for yourself:

Lord I will live in Your shelter of the Most High, I will find rest in the shadow of You Almighty.
This I declare about You Lord; You alone are my refuge, my place of safety; You are my God and I
trust You. You have said You will rescue me from every trap and protect me from deadly disease.
Psalm 91:1-3 (personalized)

Example for your family:

Lord the Smiths will live in the shelter of the Most High and the Smiths will find rest in Your
shadow, the Almighty. 2 the Smiths declare: You alone are our refuge, our place of safety; You
are our God, and we will trust You. 3 For You will rescue the Smiths from every trap and protect
them from deadly disease. Psalm 91:1-3 (personalized)

7
Praying for someone else:
Lord I pray Sally will live in the shelter of the Most High and I pray Sally will find rest in the
shadow of the Almighty. 2I I pray she will declare: You alone are her refuge, her place of
safety; You are her God, and I pray she will trust You. 3 For You will rescue Sally from every
trap and protect her from deadly disease. Psalm 91:1-3 (personalized)

SPIRITUAL PRAYER
The Holy Spirit Prays for Us. God has given us his Holy Spirit to aid us in prayer, even when we do
not know what to pray He even prays for us when we are not able to pray for ourselves. What a
great God we serve.

And in the same way-by our faith-the Holy Spirit helps us with our daily problems and in our
praying. For we don't even know what we should
Pray for nor how to pray as we should, but the Holy Spirit prays for
us with such feeling that it cannot be expressed in words. And the
Father who knows all hearts knows, of course, what the Spirit is
saying as he pleads for us in harmony with God's own will.
Romans 8:26-27 (Living)

Prayer Allows Us to Worship our Savior

O come, let us worship and bow down, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker [in reverent praise
and supplication].
Psalm 95:6 (AMP)

We often think of Worship as singing but Worship is so much more than singing. We are Worshiping
the Lord when we come to Him in prayer. This is a great way to Worship and Praise our Lord and
Savior.

He is always available to listen to us and He loves it when we also listen to Him. Any strong
relationship requires both talking and listening. We need to take the time to listen to what our Lord
has to say to us as well as pray to Him. We listen to Him and He listens to us.

Prayer Allows Us to Share Our Requests with God. Prayer is God’s way for us to share our concerns
and present our needs to him. We can talk to God about anything, absolutely anything, and He is
available and willing to listen and answer.

You want what you don't have, so you kill to get it. You long for what others have, and can't
afford it, so you start a fight to take it away from them. And yet the reason you don't have what
you want is that you don't ask God for it. And even when you do ask you don't get it because your
whole aim is wrong--you want only what will give you pleasure.
James 4:2-3 (Living)
8
God wants to give us what is best for us but we need to ask with the right motives and with a heart
that knows His will is best for us.

No request is too big or too small to bring to our Lord. He is always available.

Prayer Enables Us to Seek Forgiveness. When we pray sincerely for forgiveness, God will hear our
prayers and restore us. Hosea 14:1-7.

If My people, who are called by My name, shall humble themselves, pray, seek, crave, and
require of necessity My face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven,
forgive their sin, and heal their land. 2 Chronicles 7:14 (AMP)

We need to confess our shortcomings (sin) to the Lord and bring them to His alter for forgiveness.
Confession is a big part of prayer.

But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us
from all wickedness. 1 John 1:9 (NLT)

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right, persevering, and steadfast spirit within
me. Cast me not away from Your presence and take not Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to
me the joy of Your Salvation and uphold me with a willing spirit. Psalm 51:10-12 (AMP )

Prayer Helps Us Overcome Worry. In the midst of troubles, we can receive God’s peace through
prayer. We can either pray or worry. We cannot do both at the same time.

Pray and Let God Worry. --Martin Luther

Don't worry about anything; instead, pray about everything; tell God your needs, and don't
forget to thank him for his answers. If you do this, you will experience God's peace, which is far
more wonderful than the human mind can understand. His peace will keep your thoughts and
your hearts quiet and at rest as you trust in Christ Jesus.
Philip. 4:6-7 (Living)

Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you. 1 Peter 5:7 (NLT)

"These things have I spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace.
In the world ye shall have tribulation; but be of good cheer, for I
have overcome the world." John 16:33 (KJV)

I have been driven many times to my knees by the overwhelming conviction that I had
absolutely no other place to go. --Abraham Lincoln

9
Prayer Increases Our Spiritual Knowledge and Maturity. God will give us greater spiritual
understanding through prayer. He wants to talk to us and grow us when we talk to Him.

“Call to Me, and I will answer you, and I will tell you great and mighty
things, which you do not know.” Jeremiah 33:3 (NASB)

If we want God to answer our prayers, we must draw close to Him and spend time with Him, we
must seek Him. As we grow closer to Him, we hear from Him more often because we develop a
relationship and we are taking the time to not only talk to Him but to listen to Him as well. His desire
is for us to seek Him. He loves to spend time with us.

..as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you
may grow thereby. 1 Peter 2:2 (KJV)

PRAYER STRUCTURE

How do we organize our prayers? I spent many years of my life trying to spend time with my
Heavenly Father only to realize I didn’t really know how. I was instructed to have a “Quiet Time”
each day but still didn’t know how to do that. If you have found yourself day dreaming or even
falling asleep when you have committed to a certain time to pray, you are not alone. There are
many models out there to help us organize our prayers and stay focused.

Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in
your prayers for all believers everywhere. Ephesians 6:18 (NLT)

I have developed a prayer model that is structured to keep you organized and focused. I believe that
this model can be used during the changing seasons in your life, whether you are in the desert or on
a mountain top. It is an acrostic for the word P.R.A.Y.

10
P.R.A.Y.

Praise Him and Thank Him Always

Praise Him for how much He loves you and for dying on the cross for your sins. Thank Him for what
He has done and who He is.

I will praise you, Lord, and everyone will respect your Holy name forever. Psalm 145:21 (CEV)

Remember to Confess
Confess to Him daily/hourly. Ask Him to forgive you for what you have done.

Confess your sin to the Lord.... Ezra 10:11 (NLT)

Ask for the Desires of Your Heart

He already knows what you are thinking so talk to Him and ask Him for His help, His guidance.

Ask, and you will receive. Matthew 7:7 (CEV)

Yearn to Hear His Voice

Be quiet and listen for what He has to say to you.

Be Still and Know that I am God… Psalm 46:10 (NLT)

11
JOURNALING
In addition to following the P.R.A.Y. model, it’s important for your spiritual growth to begin
journaling. I always begin with Praise Him and Thank Him. I then look in the book of Psalms and
meditate on the praises in the scripture. I may write them down either by hand or on my computer.
I write praises to Him. Once you begin talking or writing, it will just flow. You will find that you have
so much to Praise and Thank Him for. I find that I can go on and on about His love, about who He is,
and about all He has done for me.

Next, move on to Remember to Confess. I ask Him to bring to my mind all that I need to bring to His
altar, and He does. I will list my sins, thoughts, words, attitudes, actions and ask Him to forgive me
of them. I ask Him to make me a clean vessel to be used by Him. I ask Him to make me white as
snow.

Now, I move on to Ask for the Desires of Your Heart. He already knows what is on our heart but He
wants us to ask Him, to seek Him. I begin with, “Lord this is my heart but I want Your will Lord, not
my will.” This is where I lay all my requests before Him and ask for His will to be done, telling Him
what I desire according to His will. I love going back into my past journals and seeing what He has
done and how He has answered my prayers.

I am then ready to move to Yearn to Hear His Voice. This is where I am quiet and seek to hear what
He has to say to me. I am better at talking than listening, I am not good at allowing God to speak to
me. This is a great way to hear Him speak to us, to be still and know that HE is God. If we want God
to speak to us, we need to take the time with Him, so He can speak to us.

Bible Journal
It is also important when we spend time with God to spend time in His Word. What I have found
works for me is to journal in His Word. I call this my Bible Journal. The way I do this is to copy and
paste a book of the Bible into a Word document on my computer. I use a translation easy to
understand like The Message or New Living Translation. A good website to use to get the Bible text
is http://www.biblegateway.com. http://www.youversion.com.

Then I go to my computer and start my Bible Journal. I choose a Book in the Bible from the website
and copy it in black onto my Word document for the day. Then, I type in red font my own prayer or
words that I want to journal. I copy an entire book at a time so I do not have to daily copy but
journal daily.

Here are some examples:

James 1 (NLT)
Greetings from James

1 This letter is from James, a slave of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ. I am writing to the “twelve
tribes”—Jewish believers scattered abroad. Greetings!

Faith and Endurance

2 Dear brothers and sisters,[a] when troubles come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy

MY JOURNALING: Lord this is my desire but it is so hard for me to consider it great joy when I am
experiencing times of trouble, help me Lord to consider it joy in times of trial, help me to focus on
You and not me.

3 Foryou know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. 4 So let it grow,
for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.

MY JOURNALING: Lord right now my faith is being tested so I know this is an opportunity for my
endurance to grow. Lord help me to grow so I can be more like You Lord. All I need is You Lord.

5 If
you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and He will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for
asking.

MY JOURNALING: Lord I need wisdom, I thank You in advance for the wisdom You will bless me with.
I am so grateful that You will not rebuke me for asking

May 4, 2013

6 But
when you ask him, be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not waver, for a person with
divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind. 7 Such
people should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. 8 Their loyalty is divided between God
and the world, and they are unstable in everything they do.

MY JOURNALING: Lord my faith is in You alone. I come before You with all the faith I have, my
loyalty is for You alone Lord. I am stable in You Lord. I love You.

In times of trails or deserts I find myself spending most of my time in the Psalms. This is a great place
to be when you are hurting or in need of God’s comfort, crying out to God like David did in the
Psalms. I may spend some time in the New Testament and then move into the Psalms.

13
May 5, 2013
Psalm 4

1
Answer me when I call to you, O God who declares me innocent. Free me from my troubles. Have
mercy on me and hear my prayer.

MY JOURNALING: Oh Lord answer me when I call to You. Lord free me from my troubles but help me
to learn as I go through them. Lord have mercy on me and hear my prayer.

2
How long will you people ruin my reputation? How long will you make groundless accusations? How
long will you continue your lies? Interlude 3 You can be sure of this: The LORD set apart the godly for
himself. The LORD will answer when I call to him. 4 Don’t sin by letting anger control you. Think about
it overnight and remain silent. Interlude 5 Offer sacrifices in the right spirit, and trust the LORD.

MY JOURNALING People want to ruin my reputation, they try to hurt me but I am set apart, I am
Yours Lord. I know You will answer me when I call. Lord help me to not sin in my anger, keep me
from allowing my anger to control me Lord. I will trust You Lord and I will not speak until I have
thought about what to say, I need Your help Lord.

Ultimately, there are many ways to have a meaningful time with God. Try different ways to see what
works best for you. I find changing methods periodically works well for me. Pray about what is best
for you.

Prayer Journal
I use this model every morning. I have a journal on my computer and I keep my journals. I have
included a Prayer Journal at the end of this manual. Using a journal will help your spiritual maturity.
This is very helpful to go back later and see what God has done in your life.

Now that I have used this model for a while, I pray this way often, even when I do not have my
journal. When I wake up in the night, before I get out of bed, or while I am driving, I will begin
praying this to Him. This is a great way to stay focused and not use God as a Genie by just telling him
what you want. I Praise Him, Confess, Share my Heart and give Him the time to Talk to me.

I find it beneficial to begin with:

Praise Him and Thank Him

Remember to Confess
Ask For the Desires of Your Heart

Y earn to Hear His Voice

Yearn to Hear His Voice

Be quiet and listen for what He has
to say to you.
Lord I Hear You Saying:
If you talk to Him and then ask Him __________________________________________
to talk to you, He will. Just be quiet __________________________________________
and listen, sometimes it takes a
while but the more you do it the __________________________________________
more you hear from Him. The best __________________________________________
way to hear from Him is by reading __________________________________________
His Word; praying to Him and
listening to wise counsel.

__________________________________________
Lord I desire to hear your voice, __________________________________________
speak to my heart Lord. __________________________________________
Lord I love you and desire to grow __________________________________________
closer to you today.
__________________________________________
Speak to me Lord, show me your __________________________________________
way, have your way in me Lord.
__________________________________________
__________________________________________
Give me a burning desire to know __________________________________________
you better, wake me up in the __________________________________________
morning eager to spend time with
__________________________________________
you Lord.
__________________________________________
__________________________________________
When I am afraid, I will trust you. I __________________________________________
praise God for His Word. I trust God.
__________________________________________
So I am not afraid. What can
human beings do to me? __________________________________________
Psalm 56:3-4 (ICB) __________________________________________

If you hear His voice today, don't be

stubborn like those who rebelled. 32
Hebrews 3:15 (CEV)
Y earn to Hear His Voice

Yearn to Hear His Voice

You have seen me tossing and
turning through the night. You have
collected all my tears and preserved Lord I Hear You Saying:
them in your bottle! You have
recorded everyone in your book. __________________________________________
Psalm 56:8 (Living)
__________________________________________
__________________________________________
Turn to the Lord! He can still be __________________________________________
found. Call out to God! He is near. __________________________________________
Isaiah 55:6 (CEV)
__________________________________________
I trust in God. I will not be afraid. __________________________________________
What can people do to me?
Psalm 56:11 (ICB)
__________________________________________
__________________________________________
__________________________________________
"Be still, and know that I am God.” __________________________________________
Psalm 46:10 (NIV)
__________________________________________
__________________________________________
Stay joined to me and let my __________________________________________
teachings become part of you. Then __________________________________________
you can pray for whatever you
want, and your prayer will be
__________________________________________
answered. John 15:7 (CEV) __________________________________________
And I pray that Christ will be more
__________________________________________
and more at home in your hearts, __________________________________________
living within you as you trust in Him. __________________________________________
May your roots go down deep into
__________________________________________
the soil of God's marvelous love.
Ephes. 3:17 (Living) __________________________________________
__________________________________________
__________________________________________
And now, brothers, as I close this
__________________________________________
letter, let me say this one more
thing: Fix your thoughts on what is __________________________________________
true and good and right. Think ________________________________________
about things that are pure and
lovely, and dwell on the fine, good
things in others. Think about all you
can praise God for and be glad
about. Philip. 4:8 (Living) 33
