Environmental
Observation and Poem
As part of my environmental observation activity, I took a walk around my
neighbourhood to explore the state of nature in my surroundings. During my visit, I
came across two contrasting spots that left a lasting impression on me. The first was a
beautiful and well-maintained park called Shanti Udyan, filled with lush greenery,
chirping birds, blooming flowers, and fresh air—it was a peaceful reminder of nature’s
beauty when cared for. Not far from there, I found a neglected, barren plot scattered
with garbage, dried soil, and barely any tree cover. This sharp contrast between life and
lifelessness, care and neglect, deeply moved me. It inspired me to express my thoughts
through this poem, capturing the two very different faces of nature that exist side by
side.
Poem: “Two Faces of the Same Earth”
I. The Garden of Hope
In the heart of lanes where laughter flows,
Lies a park where green and glory grows.
Birdsongs rise with the morning sun,
A canvas of peace, where life’s begun.
Petals dance in fragrant air,
Children run with carefree flair.
Trees like sentinels, strong and wise,
Reach their arms into the skies.
Butterflies flutter, bees hum low,
Nature here puts on a show.
Beneath the shade, old memories play—
A breath of life in a concrete bay.
II. The Forgotten Land
But down the lane, a shadow lies,
Where choking smoke replaces skies.
A barren patch, once full of grace,
Now stands a scarred and silent place.
No chirping birds, no leaves that sway,
Just dust and waste in foul array.
Drains that gurgle poison’s song,
Proof that we’ve been blind too long.
The soil cries out, the trees are gone,
Nature’s orchestra left forlorn.
The wind carries a heavy sigh—
Not every place can touch the sky.
The Message:
The difference between the two places I observed lies in the care they received. One
thrives because it has been nurtured and protected, while the other suffers and decays
due to neglect. However, it’s not too late to heal the damage we’ve caused. If we
choose to take action, even the most barren land can bloom again. By planting trees,
showing care for our surroundings, and taking responsibility for the environment, we
can breathe new life into dying spaces. Every small effort—whether it’s maintaining a
park, cleaning a lane, or nurturing a tree—can contribute to building a greener,
healthier, and more hopeful future for all.
This poem shows that while nature can flourish with love and attention, it also
suffers deeply from our neglect. The future of our environment lies in the
choices we make today.
