Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the following questions from 35 to 40.
When you look around you, you may think that what you see is how the area has always looked. Perhaps you
live in a place where this is true, but it’s very rare. In most places, climate, animals and humans have
changed environments, so they look completely different from hundreds or thousands of years ago.
Perhaps the biggest example is the area in Africa that we now call the Sahara. This was an area of lakes,
rivers, large animals and plants 10,000 years ago. But a change in climate from around 6,000 years ago
turned a huge area into a desert – one reason why people are worried about climate change today.
Animals change every environment which they live in. For example, rabbits are very small creatures, but
they live in enormous groups in the wild. They eat plants before they can grow into bushes or trees, creating
huge areas of grassland.
However, the greatest changes in most areas have been made by humans. Early humans cut down trees to
clear land to grow plants and then, about 2,000 years later, to keep animals. Later, they cut down more trees
to get wood for houses, and then later still, to build ships. Britain is one amazing example of humans
changing the environment completely. At one time, you could travel from the south to the north of the
country without ever leaving the forest. Now, only 5% of that land is covered with trees.
Local environments change through natural actions and human actions. If we don’t want them to change, we
have to protect them.

A. To say that small changes are normal B. To explain that we must take care of environments

environments

A. are easy to destroy
