• GENERAL INFORMATION: -
Second mineral drug in “Maharasa group”. It is a crystal borosilicate mineral compound
with elements such as Al/Fe/Mg/Na/Li/K which is known as TOURMALINE.
Chemical composition: - Mg, Mn, Fe, Ca, Na, K, Li, H, F, Al3, B2, SiO4, 02
Hardness: -4 on Moh's scale Specific gravity: -3.18 Refractive index: -1.43
Insoluble in water. On heating it glitters and with high temperature it melts. It was
substituted for diamond in ancient times

Vikrānta vaikrānta jīrņavajraka kuvajra kşudrakuliśa cūrņa-vajraka
• GRAHYAGHRYATWA: -
The Vikrant, which possesses 8 edges (asra) and 8 surfaces (phalaka), which comes white
(sita), yellow (pīta), black (asita) and coffee (aruņa) colours, which is soft to touch,
heavy, or which has 6 angles and 6 surfaces; such a sample of 'vaikrānta' is considered fit
for pharmaceutical use.

• TYPES : -
Rasa tarangani has given its 8 varieties-
1). Sweta 5). Paravataprabha
2). Nila 6). Tarksyabha
3). Rakta 7). Karbura
4). Pita 8). Krsna
- Rasa Ratna Samuchhaya has given its 8 varieties-
1). Sweta 5). Paravataprabha
2). Nila 6). Tarksyabha
3). Rakta 7). Karbura
4). Nilabha krsna 8). Krsna

• SHODHANA: -
Improperly purified Vaikrānta (aśuddha vaikrānta) causes ailments like kilāsa, daha
(burning), pārśva-pīḍā (flank pain), and pāṇḍu (anemia), thus necessitating purification.
Method 1: वैक्रान्तं पोट्टिीसंस्थं कदिीकन्दजद्रवेः । दोिायन्र परिवस्वरं यामैकन ववशुद्धयवत ।।(R. T. 23/162)
Swedana in kadali kanda juice using dolāyantra for 3 hours.
Method 2: वैक्रान्तं सपटुक्षािेः कुित्थक्वाथयोगतेः । दोिायन्र परिवस्वनेः शुवद्धमाप्नोवत यामतेः ।।
Swedana with kulattha kwātha, saindhava and yavakṣāra for 3 hours.
Method 3: कुित्थक्वाथसंवस्वन्नो वैक्रान्तेः परिशुध्यवत ।।(R. R. S. 2/66)
Swedana with kulattha kwātha alone for 3 hours.
After each process, the material is washed, dried, and stored as śuddha vaikrānta.

• MARANA: -
Method 1: विग्यतऽष्टपुटैगणन्धवनम्बुकद्रवसंयुतेः । (R. R. S. 2/67)
vaikrānta is mixed with gandhaka, triturated with lemon juice, and incinerated eight
times. This process is repeated eight times to obtain red-colored vaikrānta bhasma.

Method 2: वैक्रान्तषु च तप्तषु हयमूरं वववनवक्षपत् । पौनेःपुन्यन वा कुयाणद् द्रवं दत्त्वा पुटण त्वनु ।। भस्मीभतू ं तु वैक्रान्तं
वज्रस्थान वनयोजयत् ।।(R. R. S. 2/67-68)
Involves heating with haya mūtra until powdered, then incinerated. The process is
repeated until lustre-free bhasma is formed. (R.S.S. 2/67-68)
Method 3: ववमिबविवववमश्र चर् ू णवज्रस्य चर्
ू ं समदिदसमतं वनम्बुनीिर् वपष्टम् ।
वििदपुटसमाख्य तत् पुट संपुटस्थं वसुवमतपुटपक्वं पञ्चतां यावत नूनम् ।।(R. T. 23/163)
uses hingula, gandhaka, lemon juice, and eight gajaputas to produce red, lustre-free
vaikrānta bhasma. (R.T. 23/163)

Vaikranta Bhasma is a potent vrishya (aphrodisiac) in Ayurveda, traditionally used for
managing shukra dushti and enhancing sexual health. Though its efficacy is well-
documented in classical texts, modern scientific validation is still limited, warranting
further research to confirm its benefits in contemporary settings.

Vaikranta, first mentioned in Kautilya’s Arthashastra, is a potent Rasayana with tridosha-
hara, vrishya, and balya properties, used as a vajra substitute; identified today as
