WHV – Education for heritage in Sighişoara, UNESCO World
Heritage site
Historic Centre of Sighişoara, Romania PROJECT DATES
Cultural property inscribed on the World Heritage List (1999) 12 - 24 September 2025
THE SITE - Founded by German craftsmen and merchants known as the Saxons of Transylvania,
Sighişoara is a ne example of a small, forti ed medieval town which played an important
strategic and commercial role on the fringes of central Europe for several centuries. The city is an
outstanding testimony to the culture of the Transylvanian Saxons, a culture that is coming to a
close after 850 years and will continue to exist only through its architectural and urban
monuments. It represents an outstanding example of a small forti ed city in the border region
between the Latin-oriented culture of central Europe and the Byzantine-Orthodox culture of
south-eastern Europe.
OBJECTIVES - A recurring partner of the campaign, Maria Foundation will implement awareness
activities and practical activities as concrete actions to bring to light the Historic Centre of
Sighi oara and Transylvanian cultural heritage. The agenda will include relevant visits in at least 4
counties – Mure , Alba, Sibiu and Bra ov. The participants will engage with the history, traditions,
and contemporary issues facing these locations, allowing them to develop a holistic
understanding of cultural preservation.
ACTIVITIES - Volunteers will participate in workshops on restoration and traditional techniques,
graphics and painting, advanced technologies such as 3D scanning, digital restoration, and
artifact contextualization, as well as photo-video documentation sessions. These practical
