Growing Potatoes

To grow potatoes in bags effectively, use a nitrogen-focused fertilizer like Growmore or Sulfate of Ammonia during the early growth stage, and switch to a potassium-focused fertilizer like Tomorite or Potash of Sulphate once flowering begins. A suggested feeding schedule includes mixing fertilizers into compost at planting and applying liquid feeds every 7-10 days after flowering. Consistent watering and avoiding excess nitrogen post-flowering are also important for optimal potato development.

For growing potatoes in a bag, you’ll want a fertiliser that supports early leafy growth (high

nitrogen) followed by tuber development (higher potassium). Here’s how to manage it

effectively:

Best Fertiliser Strategy for Potatoes in Bags:

1. Early Growth Stage (Nitrogen-focused)

• Encourages strong leafy, above-ground growth to support photosynthesis.

Best options:

• Growmore (e.g. Vitax Growmore, Westland Growmore)

– Balanced NPK (typically 7-7-7), gives all-round nutrition.

– Apply when planting and mix into compost.

• Sulfate of Ammonia (e.g. Westland)

– High nitrogen (~21%) – apply sparingly early on.

– Use only once or twice early in the growing cycle.

2. Tuber Bulking Stage (Potassium-focused)

• Once plants flower (usually ~6–8 weeks in), shift to high potash fertiliser to help
potatoes develop.

Best options:

• Tomorite (Levington)

– High potassium (NPK ~4-3-8) – ideal for fruit and tuber growth.

– Start using as a liquid feed once flowering begins.

– Mix with water and apply every 7–10 days.

• Potash of Sulphate (Vitax, Westland)

– Granular high potassium – can be used in compost before flowering.

Suggested Feeding Schedule for Potatoes in Bags:

Growth Stage Timeframe Fertiliser How to Apply

Growmore or Blood Fish & Mix into compost before
Planting Week 0
Bone planting
Sulphate of Ammonia
Leafy Growth Weeks 1–4 Light sprinkle, water in
(optional)
Flowering Weeks 6– Dilute & feed every 7–10
Tomorite (liquid feed)
Onwards 10+ days

Extra Tips:

• Don’t overdo nitrogen after flowering—too much can lead to lots of leaves and few
potatoes.
• Keep watering consistent—especially during tuber formation.
• Choose peat-free compost and consider mixing in well-rotted manure or organic
matter at the start for structure.
