Question 2ai. Write 5 advantages of steam power plant?(5mark)

Question 2aii. Mention 5 equipment of steam power station?(2.5mark)

Question 2bi. Write 8 advantages of gas power plant?(7.5mark)

Question 2bii. Mention 5 main components of gas power plant?(2.5mark)

Question 3ai. Write 5 properties of a conductor material used for transmission and distribution of
electric power?(5mark)

Question 3aii. Mention 5 commonly used conductor material in electrical engineering transmission and
distribution?(2.5mark)

Question 3bi. Explain copper and aluminum conductor?(3mark)

4ai. In details, explain feeder and distributor?(8.5mark)

4aii. List three classifications of distribution systems?(1.5mark)

4bi. What are the various methods of feeding a distributor?(2mark)

4bii. A 2-wire dc distributor AB is 300m long. It is fed at point A with loads

of 30A, 40A, 100A and 50A at distances of 40m, 100m, 150m and 250m from A. If

the maximum permissible voltage drop is not to exceed 10V, find the crosssectional area of the
distributor. Take ρ = 1.78 x 10-8Ωm.

Solution:

Total voltage drop over the distributor is

V = i1R1 + i2R2 + i3R3 + …

For 2-wire distributor voltage drop is

V = 2(i1R1 + i2R2 + i3R3 + …)

Cross-sectional area A =

Resistance of section AC, RAC = ρl/A = 1.78 x 10-8 x 40/A

RAD = 1.78 x 10-8 x 100/A

RAE = 1.78 x 10-8 x 150/A

RAF = 1.78 x 10-8 x 250/A

V = 10V

10 = 2 x 1.78 x 10-8/A [(40 x 30) + (100 x 40) + (150 x 100) + (250 x 50)]

A = 116.34 x 10-6 m2
