A. Answer these questions
1. Which objects wish to fly away in this poem? Do you think they really wish to fly away or is it the speaker
who imagines this? Why?
Ans: In the poem objects like flower, the lamp and the pond are described as wishing to flyaway. However,
it is not the objects themselves that wish to fly. It is the speaker who imagines that they do so. The speaker tells
their feelings of longing and desire for freedom on to their objects making it seem like they also want to
escape and travel freely.
2.How do you know ----
a. The lamp had dreamed of flying away for a long me?
Ans. The speaker men ons the lamp had been burning quietly and pa ently holding its wings deep inside.
This suggested a long desire to be free and move away. So, the lamp grew its own wings turned into firefly
and achieved its dream.
b. How the pond was feeling?
Ans: The pond feels sad and hopeless. It can see the birds happily flying in the sky, while it has to lie s ll on
the ground. The pond compares itself to the birds.
3. Will none of my wishes ever come true?
a. Who says these words?
Ans: The speaker of the poem said these words.
b. What do they wish for?
Ans: The speaker wishes to be free like birds, fishes and horses. He wants to be free and to fly away
like the objects they imagine. The flower wishes to become a bu erfly, the lamp wants to be a firefly and the pond,
a cloud.
c. How is this stanza different from the previous stanzas?
Ans: In the previous stanzas, the speaker imagines objects turning into free, flying things. But in this stanza,
the speaker expresses his own sadness and frustra on, wondering whether his personal wishes will ever
come true. It becomes more emo onal and personal.
4. Why do you think that the flower became a bu erfly, the lamp became a firefly and the pond become a cloud?
Ans: The flower, lamp and pond all transform into things that can move and fly because they symbolize
the dream of freedom. The flower becomes a bu erfly to fly freely, the lamp becomes firefly to dance in the air,
and the pond becomes a cloud to dri across the sky just like the speaker’s wish to travel and be free.
Appreciating the poem
1.Which objects have been personified in this poem? How?

The pond is pictured as wan ng to float away and become a cloud.
These are given human like feelings and dreams, even though they are non-living things.
2. Does personification make the poem more vivid and interesting? Explain?
Ans: Yes, personifica on make the poem more vivid and interes ng. By giving feeling and dreams to the flower,
lamp and pond, the poet makes the readers to imagine these objects are living beings with emo ons. It helps us to
