INTRODUCTION

Choosing a career is one of the most important crossroads in a student’s life—

where the possibilities are vast and diverse. But what truly influences their career

choices? Is it a spark of personal interest? The push from parents? The inspiration of a

favorite teacher or role model? Or maybe the realities of job availability and income

potential? For many Humanities and Social Science students, the answer is a unique mix

of all these factors and more. Their decisions can be influenced by outside factors such as

personal factors and external factors. With countless possibilities ahead, many struggle to

find a path that aligns with their passions, skills, and future aspirations. External

pressures from family, society, and job market demands often add to their uncertainty,

making the decision even more complex. The lack of proper career guidance and the fear

of financial instability further contribute to their anxiety about the future. Given these

challenges, it is essential for students to receive proper guidance, exposure to different

career paths, and support in making informed decisions.

Research has shown several common factors that influence the students career

decision. According to Nazareno et.al (2021), parents play an essential role in shaping

their children’s personalities as they grow. As students’ primary support system, they can

influence their educational aspirations, work ethics and values, and motivation.

Furthermore, a study by Mohebi (2024), indicates that personal interests and passions

significantly guide students toward careers that align with their hobbies and skills.

Additionally, according to a study by Parker et al. (2020), students from lower-income

backgrounds are more likely to pursue careers with higher earning potential to improve
2

their financial standing. These common factors shows the effectiveness of influencing the

students career choice.

In contrary, various researchers have conducted these studies, highlighting the

multiple factors that influence career choices. Based on the study conducted by Almario

(2021), entitled “Factors Affecting Career Decision of SHS in Central Luzon,” various

factors are influencing career choices among students, especially those in the Humanities

and Social Sciences strand. Some of the factors that are included are the socio-economic

profile of students, personal and academic abilities, and awareness of market trends and

job opportunities. Additionally, the study highlights the issue of unemployment due to the

mismatch between the individual skills and the workforce. It also emphasizes the

Importance professional guidance for students in making informed career decisions.

In observing the students from the Humanities and Social Sciences strand in the

University of Cebu, the researchers observed that various factors influencing their career

choices were evident. Parental expectations played a significant role, with many students

noting the pressure to align their choices with family aspirations, often prioritizing

financial stability over personal interests. Financial concerns also surfaced, particularly

among students from lower-income backgrounds, who leaned toward cost-effective

career paths like teaching or government work. Despite these external influences, several

students showed a genuine passion for Humanities and Social Science disciplines,

actively engaging in discussions about culture, society, and human behavior. However, a
3

lack of accessible professional guidance left some students uncertain about aligning their

interests with practical career opportunities, highlighting the need for targeted support.

This study focuses on understanding the unique factors influencing the career

choices of Humanities and Social Sciences students. While previous research has

extensively covered areas like peer influence, job market awareness, and career guidance

programs, less emphasis has been placed on the roles of personal interests and famil

expectations in shaping career decisions, especially within this specific student

population. By addressing these aspects, this study aims to provide valuable insights into

how personal and familial dynamics influence career paths, offering a deeper

understanding that could help improve support systems and guidance strategies for

Humanities and Social Science students.

Furthermore, this study aims to investigate the various factors that influence

students' career choices. Career decision-making is a critical process that can significantly

affect an individual’s future opportunities, satisfaction, and personal development. The

study is important in identifying the roles of personal interests, family expectations,

societal influences, and educational exposure in shaping students' career paths. By

understanding these influences, educators and counselors can provide more effective

guidance and support to students as they navigate their options. The findings may

contribute to the development of improved career programs that promote informed and

confident decision-making.
4

FRAMEWORK OF THE STUDY

This study is anchored on Social Learning Theory by John Krumboltz in 1996.

This theory suggests that career choices are influenced by learning experiences,

environmental conditions, genetic factors, and task approach skills. Krumboltz identifies

four key factors that impact career decisions and these are: Genetic Endowments and

Special Abilities, Environmental Conditions and Events, Learning Experiences and, Task

Approach Skills. Krumboltz later expanded his theory with the Planned Happenstance

Theory, which highlights the role of chance events in shaping career paths and

encourages individuals to embrace unexpected opportunities.

Krumboltz’s Social Learning Theory of Career Decision Making (SLTCDM) is

highly relevant to our study on the factors influencing career choice of Humanities and

Social Sciences (HUMSS) students. The theory explains that career decisions are shaped

by learning experiences, environmental factors, personal abilities, and task approach

skills (Krumboltz, 1996). In the context of Humanities and Social Science students, their

career choices may be influenced by their exposure to humanities-related subjects,

interactions with teachers and mentors, societal expectations, and available career

opportunities. By applying this theory, our study can analyze how both external

influences and personal learning experiences shape the career preferences of Humanities

and Social Science students, providing insights into effective career guidance strategies.
5

Another theory that supports this study are by Deutsch and Gerard's Social

Influence Theory (1955) posits that conformity arises from two fundamental human

motivations: the desire for accuracy (informational influence) and the need for social

acceptance (normative influence). Informational influence occurs when individuals look

to others as a source of valid information, particularly in ambiguous or novel situations,

leading to genuine belief change. While normative influence is the desire to fit in and

avoid social disapproval, resulting in public compliance without necessarily

understanding the group's beliefs. Our beliefs and behaviors are often formed by the

perceived skill and social approval of those in our social environment.

This theory relates to the study as this provides a logical and relevant basis in

terms of how individuals' behavior and attitude can be shaped by group of society and

social context. By understanding the dual forces of informational and normative

influence, we can better analyze how people conform in various situations—whether due

to a genuine belief in the group's knowledge or simply to avoid standing out. This insight

is crucial in exploring social behavior, decision-making, and the impact of peer or

societal pressure in our specific area of research.

This study is corroborated by Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) that was

developed by Lent Brown, and Hackett in 1994. Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT)

explains how career interest, choices, and achievements are influenced by self-efficacy,

outcome expectations, and personal goals. Based on the Social Cognitive Career Theory
6

of Bandura, SCCT highlights the individual beliefs and environmental factors in shaping

career decision-making. Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) suggests that career

decisions making is not just affected by the factor called personal interests, but also by

the opportunities and obstacles. Insufficient financial support, limited access to quality

education, and social pressure might be the obstacles that could influence how the

students perceive their career choices in the future (Lent et al., 1994, as cited in Wang et

al., 2022). efficient performance enhancements: attitude, environment, and reflective

practice (Elger,2007).

In the context of this study, the Social Cognitive Career Theory is particularly

beneficial to the framework as this highlights how students' self-concepts and anticipated

outcomes guide their career decisions. Furthermore, the study emphasizes the important

role of external influences, such as family and peers, in shaping the students' career paths,

aligning the social cognitive career theory (SCCT) structure. By understanding these

factors, this study can help educators and counselors offer better support to students as

they plan for their future careers.

LITERATURE REVIEW

Several studies have highlighted that choosing and making decisions about career

paths is a defining phase in every student’s life. According to Ouano et al. (2019) found

that students’ career choices are mainly influenced by institutional considerations,

followed by personal interest, peer influence, and job opportunities. Gurunathan (2024)
7

further noted that parental education, profession, and income significantly influence

students' career choices. Educated parents provide better resources and guidance, leading

to more informed decisions. Parental professions expose students to specific career paths,

shaping their aspirations. Financial stability enables access to quality education and

extracurriculars, broadening career options. Recognizing these factors is crucial for

developing effective career guidance programs.

Supporting this, the educational environment plays a key role in shaping career

decisions by providing a foundation for academic and professional growth. Kassab et al.

(2024) highlighted that exposure to diverse subjects, career-related events, and counselor

guidance significantly impact students' career choice. Meanwhile, Madhavan,

Venugopalan, and Sisodia (2019) pointed out that peer influence really affects how

students choose their careers. In India a lot of business students follow career paths that

are popular among their classmates. In a similar way, Nasayao III (2025) looked at how

classmates influence each other when making career choices in high school. The study

showed that students often turn to their friends for support, advice, or even as examples

of what to do. These findings highlight the importance of how the group dynamic and

social context influence the students choice of career.

In today's digital age, social media has become a powerful tool in shaping

students' perceptions and decisions about their future careers. Zamroni et al. (2023) found

that social media significantly influences students' career choices, with 61% relying on
8

platforms like Facebook and Instagram for career-related information. This influence

surpassed traditional factors such as family, peers, and self-assessment. The study

highlights the importance of incorporating digital literacy into career guidance programs

to help students critically evaluate online content.

For example, Li, Shi, and Feng (2025) explored the relationship between social

media use and college students' job choices, highlighting the mediating roles of work

values and self-efficacy. Their study revealed that increased social media usage is

associated with more flexible and diverse employment options among students. This

association is mediated by enhanced work values—such as prioritizing job satisfaction

and career development—and heightened self-efficacy, which empowers students to

pursue careers aligned with their personal values. The findings underscore the importance

of integrating digital literacy and career guidance to help students navigate the vast

information available on social media platforms effectively.

Cozma (2023) discusses the critical factors of values, passion, and purpose in

guiding career decisions which social media can influence these decisions by providing

information, facilitating networking, and shaping perceptions. The author emphasizes that

while these elements are often considered separately, their integration leads to a more

fulfilling career journey. Lastly, Chelagat, Wanami, and Sempele (2023) found that

personal interest is a key determinant in students' choice of Home Science Education

programmes in Kenyan universities. Their study revealed that 93.3% of students selected
9

the programme based on personal interest, with career opportunities and passion for the

field also playing significant roles. This highlights the importance of aligning academic

programmes with students' interests to foster career satisfaction and engagement.

Together, these studies underscore the personal interest that contributes the career

decisions of student. As this personal interest also contributes through social media,

peers, and environment.

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The study aims to explore the factors influencing the career choices of Humanities

and Social Sciences (HUMSS) students at the University of Cebu Senior High School.

The results will provide insights for enhancing career guidance and support for

Humanities and Social Science students. Specifically, the study seeks to answer the

following questions: 1) factors influencing career choice. 2) challenges of students with

their career decision ; and 3) coping strategies and advice from the decision.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study is significant as it aims to provide valuable insights into the various

factors that influence the career choices of Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS)

students at the University of Cebu – Main Senior High School Campus. Understanding

these factors is crucial for guiding students in making informed and meaningful career

decisions. For students, this study will help them become more aware of the internal and

external influences shaping their career paths, enabling them to reflect on their choices

and make decisions aligned with their interests, values, and goals. For educators and
10

guidance counselors, the findings will offer a deeper understanding of students’ needs

and concerns, allowing them to develop more effective career guidance programs and

interventions tailored to the HUMSS strand. For parents and guardians, the study may

highlight the importance of their role in supporting and influencing their children's career

decisions, encouraging more open communication and informed involvement. Lastly, for

future researchers, this study can serve as a foundation for further investigation into

career decision-making processes among senior high school students, particularly within

the context of the Philippine education system.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

This is limited to exploring the factors influencing career choices exclusively

among five Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) students at the University of Cebu

- Main Senior High School Campus. The research focuses on career decisions within a

recent five-year period, using interviews as the only data collection method. Specifically,

it aims to identify the individuals who have the most significant impact on these students'

career choices, limiting the scope to this specific population and time frame. This study

aims to investigate the factors that influence career choice among senior high school

students in the University of Cebu Pri. In this case, voices must be heard in taking their

career choice as it may be their passion or their dream. Career is your future that must be

planned to choose the correct path you will be taking. A lot of factors influence students

by choosing their career choice especially when thinking about their current situation.

They are influenced physically, mentally, and emotionally

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This study will use the qualitative phenomenological study as its research design,

it aims to describe what its like to be in a personal perspective. It's all about personal

experiences encountered by a person. Like how the participants being influenced when it

comes to their career choice. As phenomenological focuses on the perspective and

experiences of a person, the participants experience being influenced by their peers. This

allows researchers to gain a deeper understanding of how individuals perceive and make

sense of these influences in their lives.

This study will conduct in the Humanities and Social Science students of

University of Cebu-Senior Highschool Campus. The campus, which had a school

number of 404471, had its location at Saciangko St. Cebu City. The environment aims to

emphasize the influences that may also contribute to the factors of chosing career align

Humanities and Social Science track. Such as the school, classroom, or the computer and

learning resources. Due to the convenience and a great target demographic that may

readily assist with this study, the researcher chose this place to conduct the semi-

structured interview.

The target participants for this study is the Humanities and Social Sciences

students in the University of Cebu - Main Senior Highschool Campus. The selection of

individuals will be done using the purposive sampling technique. The method of
12

choosing samples by purposive sampling is based on an individuals' characteristics who

meet the criteria and standards in which that the participants should be a Humanities and

Social Sciences student. In order to obtain responses from the students with a variety of

perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences, the researchers will select random

respondents that meets the criteria until it reaches the data saturation. This study will be

done through an Interview with the students as a survey and reference. By this strategy

the researchers are going to be able to know the factors that influence the career choices

of Humanities and Social Sciences Students.

In this qualitative study, a semi-structured interview serves as the research

instrument to examine the factors influencing the career choices of HUMSS students at

University of Cebu – Pri. The interview consists of open-ended questions. This designed

to encourage participants to share their personal experiences, perspectives, and decision-

making processes regarding their career paths. Additionally, this method allows for in-

depth exploration of key influences such as family, peers, personal interests, societal

expectations, and academic exposure. By utilizing interviews, the study aims to gather

rich, detailed narratives that provide a deeper understanding of the various elements

shaping students' career choices.

In our data collection procedure, we start by referring our possible questions to

the teacher for her/him to check if there was any error or revision to our proposed

questions. After, the researchers will ask permission to the principal for us to be able to
13

conduct an interview inside the campus. When the researchers starts to conduct the

interview, they will give first the consent form to proced by explaining the flow of the

interview. Lastly when the researchers will start the interview they will record the

conversation to track and collect the respondents answer for us to be able to gather our

data.

The researchers will analyze the data by reviewing all the audio and using their

point of view to get their review. After that we would list down the positive and negative

reviews and reasons why it is a negative or a positive comment. The researchers would

also like to highlight the comments that will strongly link in our study and possibly find a

possible solution. The next step is to create a graph that's where the thematic analysis

comes in. Using the data we have gathered through audio we would be able to collect and

organize the feedback for a better understanding of our study.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS

This section presents the findings from qualitative coding of factors influencing

career choice of humanities and social sciences students. The analysis of students

perspective on career choice identified 5 prominent factors that consistently emerged

across the data.

Based on the students situation these overarching themes include family choice,

own interest, and market demands. The subsequent sections will examine into each of
14

these core themes, providing illustrative evidence from the students data to illuminate the

specific ways in which these factors manifest and contribute to career decision-making.

In terms of choosing the career of the students they're more likely influenced by

their family choices.

Based on the formulated categories examined from sub-categories out from the

participants statements, the major themes appear that they choose their career path from

these factors which are the parental influence, passion, pressured by their peers, and

financial constraints. These factors are the most common encounters when choosing their

career path.

''Factors? It will be my first, my family.” (Participant 2 , Line 38).

"My interest. Like for example I'm interested in public speaking. So bali it's my

passion” (Participants 2, Line 38)

“It doesn't make something clear at all when you making a career decisions.

especially when pressured by peers.” (Participant 5, Line 170)

“Di lang ko mag sugar coat sa akong tubag is kwarta jud no.” (Participant 4, Lines

146-148).

“The first, the tuition fee jud”. (Participant 3, Line 107)

Discussion

As support from the major themes, it was explained by Ouano et al. (2019), who

emphasized that institutional factors, personal interests, and peer influence significantly

shape students’ career decisions. One of the most prominent themes identified in this
15

study is parental influence. The participants expressed that their parents' expectations

played a crucial role in shaping their career decisions. This aligns with the findings of

Nazareno et al. (2021) and Gurunathan (2024), who emphasized how parents, as primary

support systems, influence students’ motivation, work ethic, and aspirations. For some

students, this influence led to prioritizing careers with financial stability, often at the

expense of their personal interests or passions. Another significant theme is the role of

personal interest and passion. These interests often developed through exposure to

academic subjects, extracurricular activities, and personal reflections. This finding

supports Mohebi (2024) and Chelagat et al. (2023), who noted that passion and alignment

with hobbies and values strongly guide students’ choices. The influence of peer and

societal pressure also emerged as a relevant factor. Some students admitted that they look

up to their friends and classmates when thinking about future careers. As well as the

pressure that they got from the people that surrounds them. This echoes the studies of

Madhavan et al. (2019) and Nasayao III (2025), who found that students often conform to

popular choices within their peer groups, either to fit in or to follow what is perceived as

successful or socially acceptable. Lastly, Financial constraints and job market trends

were additional recurring concerns. Students from lower-income backgrounds often

leaned toward practical and cost-effective career paths, such as becoming public school

teachers or civil servants. This confirms the study of Parker et al. (2020), which

highlighted how students’ socioeconomic status can influence them to pursue more stable

or financially promising careers.

16

Based on Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) career interest are greatly

influenced by some factors. (SCCT) believes that choosing a career path is not only

affected by the factor called personal interest but also the obstacles and challenges faced.

Lack of support is a challenge that a student faces in choosing a career (Lent et al., 1994,

as cited in Wang et al., 2022). (SCCT) highlighted how students view outcomes to guide

their career decision. Furthermore, the study shows importance in shaping the students

career path.

3 Interviewer 1: We are from 11 HUMSS 1A and it okay if we conduct an

interview po?

4 Interviewee: yes

5 Interviewer 1: pwede mo ask sa imo name?

6 Interviewee I'm Sheila Lumbao

7 Interviewer 1: okay miss sheila. is it okay ba if our interview will be

documented?

8 Interviewee: yes okay ra

9 Interviewer 1: If you feel uncomfortable you can tell me na to stop the interview

10 Interviewee: Yes okay ra

28

11 Interviewer 1: We will start our interview. So our study is all about the factor
influencing career choice of humanities and social science in the university of cebu main
senior high school campus.

12 Interviewer 2: This is our first question. So the first question is what factors
influence your career choices? you can answer in binocular.

13 Interviewee okay the first factor na ako gi consider in making a decision sa

akong career choice is, as everyone else kwarta dyud since ang courses man gud sa
college kay mo take up dyud siya ug kwarta especially if sa private school siya. But since
nadawat ko sa CNU gi consider gihapon nako ang expenses sa miscellaneous as well as
after graduating sa college.
kuha? so mo take up pa siya ug siguro experience and lots of practice padyud. Especially
if ganahan ko mo gawas so kana ra siya. And third is ang support sa akoang family
becuase kani na career path na ako gi decide or akong e take up kay dli dyud ni siya ang
gusto sa akoang parents for me. But akoa radyud ning passion to give service sa uban and
kana ta siya. Mao rana ang major factor.

14 Interviewer 1: So follow up question rani ha. so do you happen to have any

thought to change your career plan because of this career choice?

15 Interviewee Actually yes, base akong career choice as of now and as katong
bata pako is tourism dyud. But nag duha duha duha nako since base sa demand sa
industry kay ganahan ko mo change into business nalang mas practical siya and mas dali
siya sudlon and as well as naa pud koy passion sa business.

16 Interviewer 1: So what are the biggest challenges you face while picking a career
path?

17 Interviewee: So the biggest challenge for me is kana gali naay influences sa

29

18 Interviewer 1: Follow up question lang. How do this challenges influence your

decision?

But since
kuan naman dyud ako mind sa tourism mao nadyud na akong ganahan e take up. Even
thought ga humss ko of course mao ako sundon. Maybe in the near future ma change ako
mind and e second option nalang ang toursim since mas practical mandyud ang business
and management. mao na siya.

20 Interviewer 2: So how do you cope? or unsa man ang mga coping strategies na

siya as inspiration and motivation to take up whats best for me. So kana siya dli rana siya
basta critsicism lang. Ako pud siyang gi way gali ug unsa dyud ang mas tama gali or unsa
dyud ang mas kuan. But as of now mas ni height mandyud akoang passion instead sa mga
criticism na ako na dawat nila.

22 Interviewer 1: Follow up question lang po. Is there by any chance that this
strategies sometimes not help you in making career choices, and if ever naa how?

23 Interviewee: So far wala radyud siya naka affect sa kuan

24 Interviewer 1: Thank you Soo much so everything na ma storyaan nato in this

interview will remain confidential its just for research purposes only thank you

REVIEWER:

25 Interviewer 1: So, good morning po. I am Matt Griffin Pancho Ardiente

26 Interviewer 2: I am Mary Niña G. Doblas and we are

27 Interviewer 1: From 11 HUMSS 1A and is it possible to conduct an interview

with you po?

28 Interviewee: Yes

29 Interviewer 1: So, our research is all about Factors Influencing Career Choice of
the Humanities and Social Science Students University of Cebu Main Senior High School

30 Campus. So, is it okay if our interview will be documented and voice

recorded?

31 Interviewee: Documented like video? Or picture lang?

32 Interviewer 1: Picture

33 Interviewee: Yeah, it's okay

34 Interviewer 1: Also, if you feel uncomfortable, you can always tell me to stop so
we can stop the interview. Also, you can also choose the dialect or language you want.

35 Bisaya, Tagalog and English. So, we will start na. Pwede mo ask sa
imong name?
31

36 Interviewee: I'm Angel Jojie R. Dadacay

37 Interviewer 1: So, my first question is what are the factors that influence your
career choices?

38 Interviewee: Factors? It will be my first family then also my interest. Like for
example I'm interested in public speaking. Then my career choice would be align

39 lawyering. In college pwede siya accountancy as my pre law course or like

political science para politics.

40 Interviewer 2: Do you happen to have a thought to change your career plan

because of these factors?

so mao na gyud to siya

42 Interviewer 1: So next question is what are the biggest challenges you face when
deciding on a career path?

43 Interviewee: Before I was actually undecided. Undecided ko sa akung career

path kay I was exploring pa my strength, my weaknesses. Ang biggest challenge nako is

44 unsa man gyud ang akung strength so unsaon nako pag identify. So

45 ba cookery ba run, accountancy, or pol science. Ang akung gi huna-huna

sa una kay kung magpol science ko walay siyay immediate na trabaho in the real world.

46 Interviewer 2: So how do these challenges influences your decision?

ingana

48 so kadugayan na come up ra nako na finalize na nako ang akung career

choice like ang akung strength diay more on speaking and more on writing so pwede
32

50 Interviewer 1: So next question po is coping mechanism? So, what are the coping
strategies that help you overcome the challenges. For example your

51 pressure like about your first family.

52 Interviewee: Naa man gyud na ang pressure no. Ang akoa nalang kay e motivate
nalang sa akung motivation, self reassurance, e motivate ra nako akung self na dili mani

53 permi undecided and also dapat ma pro ko as a person, as a student and

akung family in the long run so ingana…

55 Interviewer 2: So by any chance do this. Do you think that those strategies are
effective for you and why?

so e

58 Interviewer 1: So last question po, what advice for those people who are now
thinking about their career plan?

59 Interviewee: Before undecided ko paggrade 10. We had this seminar gi ingnan

mi na to identify your career, you must know your strengths and weaknesses. For
example

60 again your strengths align with math like align math you're good at
computations so pwede ka sa engineering. If ganahan sad ka og measurements you're
align
33

61 with like measurements or drawings pwede ka sa arts, architect or

architecture ingana. ..and if you're align also with computations or like in general
business

62 management pwede sad ka sa accountancy, business world. So, ang imoha

lang gyud kung unsa imong for example potentials or thing na ma excel ka para nimo

63 mao nalang na ang imohang serve as your motivation or like serve as your
motivation na kani lang gyud akung kuhaon kay diri man ko ganahan, diri man ko

64 passionate about, diri man sad ni align ang akung strengths.

65 Interviewer 1: Thank you so much po. Our interview will remain confidential. It
is just for research purposes only. Thank you so much po.

TRANSCIBED BY: Stephanie Jane Ardiente and Kisha Kaye Burden

REVIEWER:

67 Interviewer 1: Good Morning po, I am Matt Griffin Ardiente

68 Interviewer 2: and I am Kisha Kaye Burden

69 Interviewer 1: And we are from grade 11 Humss 1A, and is it possible to conduct
an interview with you po

70 Interviewee: Yes you have permission

71 Interviewer 1: Is it okay to ask your name po?

72 Interviewee: My name is Renan Jr Tumulak from Humss 2A, graduating

student
34

73 Interviewer 1: So a little inside about our research, it is about Factors influencing

career choice of Humanities and Social Science Students and the University of Cebu
senior

74 high campus. It is okay lang po ba our interview will be documented

through picture?

75 Interviewee: Sure sure

76 Interviewer 1: Is it okay po our interview will be vioce recorded?

77 Interviewee: Is it okay

78 Interviewer: Thank you.

79 Interviewer 1: So my first question po is what Factors in a influence your career

choice?

80 Interviewee: So in bisaya facctors na naka kanang influence siya

81 Interviewee: First, isa akong preferences like tanan man gud taw naa silay
murag kaugalingon talents, kaugalingon skills so mag matters gyud na imong skills kung
kuan ka sa

82 imong career choices, for example i'm good at social studies, so possible
na mokuha kog social studies because i'm good at it, Second choice why your parents

humss man gud kung humss student ka, you are aware sa tanan social economic system.
Mga

84 ingana, mga unsay values sa pamilya you know that, so ahm maka
influence na siya when it comes to sa humss kay naa gyd tay own views, mayta mo
comment

85 mayta mo analyze, dayun maka kuan sd ta maka self discover sa atong

kaugalingon kung unsay gyud mas maayo para nato, nya ikatulo naa man
35

86 gyud na nature sa usa ka taw to do good things sa kalibutan, so ahm ang

maayosa humss student makahunahuna sila kung unsay ma provide nila or unsay
matabang

87 nila para sa ilang communitee since ang humss is about solidarity to the
world baya, so ingana mao na akong answer sa number 1

88 Interviewer 2: Ahm so follow up question, how to this factors influence your

career choices?

91 personally ganahan gyd ko mag STEM because i'm good at sciences but I
also good at social sciences so right now i'm confuse ha, sa duha pero i'm finalize na

92 Social Sciences because like what I've said before nga i want to provide, i
want to help the communitee, i want to understand the communitee, mao na siya,

93 maka affect gyud siya oy

94 Interviewer 1: Diba you said na ay nag humss ka right now but before gusto ka
mag stem.

95 Interviewee: Yes.

96 Interviewer 1: Do you happen to have a thought to change your career path

because of this career choice?

97 Interviewee: Yes, of course ahm i've said its very confusing ahm libog gyd siya
its like kanang mo choose mura gud kuan ba asa ka like sa imong mama or sa imong
papa, love

siya ba, very hard to choose kay kana man gud imong career is kanang nag defined sa
36

99 imong self di ra man gud na about sa work its you man gud, so mao na
libog gyd siya e choose but karon naka decide na man gyd ko although the considering a

100 benefits sa communitee and to my self.

101 Interviewer 1: Okay, Thank you for that.

102 The next question is all about challenges, so my question is what are the
biggest challenges you faced in deciding on a career path?

103 Interviewee: Career path so first, uhm the tuition tanang mga uhm courses is naa
silay nag ka lain-lain nga tuition fees like for example, teacher is kanang murag around
mga

104 30 ah mga ana-ana but for uhm things like engineer very expensive so
what factors is ang kanang tuition fee. Second is ang kuan jud niya ang… can you repeat
the

105 the question?

106 Interviewer 1: oh uhm what are the biggest challenges you faced in deciding on a
career paath?

107 Interviewee: Ah yes, the biggest challenges ay is the first, the tuition fee, the
second is uhm my passion jud kay daghan lage gyud sila ug talents dayun mag libog gyud
ka kung asa

108 ka mo pili so uhm it's very challenging to choose if you go that way or that
way so uhm biggest challenge jud na sa usa ka tao dili ra na para nako but para na sa
tanan

109 humss

110 Interviewer 1: Okay so, since naa kay mga challenges but what challenge
influenced you more to choose the career path you've taken now?
37

111 Interviewee: First uhm , I've been in a school organization, uh campus ministry
so campus ministry is uhm religious so it means it deals with community nasad so uhm
first

112 that organization, the campus ministry uh influenced me to uhm to be in a

social science uh BSED social science because uh I want to learn more about sa society,

113 about community, about solidarity, and uh uhm deep systems within our
world

114 Interviewer 1: Okay thank you, now let's move on to the coping strategies
questions

116 Interviewer 1: for the challenges

nana

119 jud ko diri ipadayun nalang inana.

120 Interviewer 1: Do you think that strategy is effective for you and why?

121 Interviewee: This strategy is of course effective because uhm it's practical man
gud kay as I've said nga nana kay experience diri so you can use that experience to
continue that

naka agi nakag social sciences inana.
38

124 Interviewer 1: So last question is, do you have any advice for those upcomming
kanang mga students nga nag plan na karon for their career path?

125 Interviewee: First, choose wisely.

imong soul. Inana jud na siya and igka third is ang kuan uhm be practical jud, be
practical

kuan

128 jud ka firm ka, kana imong ge choose kana na jud, it’s like there's no
turning back ba, there's no turning back. Pwede man nuon ka maka change pero time
consuming

129 na kaayu, example naka start nakag social studies uhm you realize it's not
for you so mo change nasad kag lain course so daghan na kaayu kag time na kuhaan so
ana

130 jud, choose wisely and uh be firm of your decsion, that's it.

131 Interviewer 1: Thank you so much po and ano lang, this interview will remain
confidential and this is only for purposes.

132 Interviewee: It's okay.

133 Interviewer 1: Thank you so much po.

134 Interviewee: You're welcome.

TRANSCIBED BY: Claire Ann C. Dela Peña, Matt Griffin Pancho Ardiente

REVIEWER:

135 Interviewer: Hello kuya I'm Dominic Antony Savellon and would you care for
an interview?

136 Interviewee: Yes pwede ra kayu no para maka help tas inyung research. So unsa
man diay ni about inyung research?

137 Interviewer: About ni siya sa Factor Influencing Career of Humanities and

Social Science Students

138 Interviewee: okay

139 Interviewer: First question: what factors influenced your career choice?

140 Interviewee: So aside sa personal choice, dako nga factor sa akong pag pili sa
akong career soon is akong family.

141 Interviewer: How do these factors influence your career choice?

because is main only child ko.
nku akong family in the future Kay as of now kaya sila Maka sustain sa akong personal
needs but time will come nga ako ra usa ang mo sustain pud sa ilaha in the future. So I
understand nga naa silay Gamay nga pagbuot kung unsa nga career akong kuhaon
because they want to secure my life in the future.

143 Interviewer: Do you happen to have a though to change your career because of
these factors?

144 Interviewee: Yes, because originally ganahan jud ko mag Businesses field, but
So basically ma
40

achieve nku ang business maski di nku kailangan mo skwela and aside sad ana ganahan
since only child lagi ko.

145 Interviewer: What are the challenges you face in finding your career path?

146 Interviewee: Biggest challenge is just, actually di kaayu siya big but ginagmay
lang mo like little bit of adjustments since mao ni ila ganahan sa akoa and I tried to
embrace nalang ba nga Kani siya nga desisyon makalipay nis ilaha

147 Interviewer: What challenges influenced you more to choose the career path
you've taken now?

149 Interviewer: What do these challenges influence your decision?

150 Interviewee: Kani nga mga challenges, tungod aning mga challenges naka
decide ko nga ing-ani is because I find a way kung unsaon nako siya pag solve and for
me this is a best or the appropriate way nga mapalipay nako akong pamilya at the same
time maka sustain ko sa ilang future

151 Interviewer: What are the coping strategies for you to overcome the challenge?

152 Interviewee: Okay, coping strategies is that think positive lang, dili mannsad
necessary nga ug wala nimo nakuha imong gusto dili naka malipay, it's just need lang

153 Interviewer: Do you think those strategies are effective for you?
41

154 Interviewee: For me, effective na siya since as of now, yes dili pako successful
but makita nako sa ilaha nga gi increase ilang pag salig nako kay tungod ako gipa tuo
ilahang advice

155 Interviewer: any chance do these strategies sometimes do not help you when
making career decisions?

156 Interviewee: I don't think so, because first things first, I am a family oriented
person and I do family things first, I disregard gyud na nako ang mga butang nga maka pa

157 Interviewer: What advice do you ask from others?

158 Interviewee: For choosing career physically, I do a practical thinking which is

maka dawat kog advice, like oi maypag ing-ani ka maypag mag ing-ana ka, but I guess, I
know myself better than them so basically, yes, maka dawat tag ing-ana nga advice but
it's for you to handle gali nga imo ba ni take, imo bani I follow since mas nakaila man ka
sa imong kaugalingon. Ing-anaon ra nako siya pag assess.
