Copper production involves extracting and processing copper ores to produce pure copper metal, primarily from sulfide and oxide ores. Key stages include mining, where methods like open-pit and underground mining are used, and concentration, which involves crushing and processing the ore to increase copper concentration through flotation. Major copper ores include chalcopyrite, bornite, malachite, and azurite.

Copper Production Overview

Copper production involves the extraction and processing of copper ores to produce pure copper
metal. The process can be broken down into several key stages:

🏔️1. Mining

Copper is primarily extracted from sulfide and oxide ores.

 Major copper ores:

o Chalcopyrite (CuFeS₂) – most common
o Bornite (Cu₅FeS₄)
o Malachite (Cu₂CO₃(OH)₂)
o Azurite (Cu₃(CO₃)₂(OH)₂)
 Mining methods:
o Open-pit mining – common for large deposits near the surface.
o Underground mining – used when ore is deep.

🏭 2. Concentration

The ore is crushed, ground, and processed to increase the copper concentration.

 Flotation process:
o Sulfide ores
