WHISKY /WHISKEY

The term ‘whisky’ derives originally from the Gaelic ‘uisge beatha’,
or ‘usquebaugh’, meaning ‘water of life’. Gaelic is that branch of
Celtic spoken in the Highlands of Scotland.
Ireland and Scotland both countries are origin of whiskey.

Definition:-Whisky or whiskey is a type of distilled alcoholic


beverage made from fermented grain mash.
GRAINS- used for whiskies- barley, corn, rye, wheat.

The story of Scotch begins as early as the 15th century. The earliest
documented record of distilling in Scotland occurred in 1494.

Difference between malt whisky and grain whisky
Malt whisky: Those whiskies which Grain whisky: Those whiskies
made from entirely 100% barley is which made from other grains
called malt whisky. like wheat, corn and rye is called
grain whisky.
Q. What is malt?
Ans-Malt is any grain that has been made to germinate by
soaking in water and then stopped from germinating further
by drying with hot air, a process known as "malting".

Ans- GERMINATION-Germination is the process of seeds


developing into new plants.
5 Types of Scotch Whisky
1. Single malt Scotch whisky
1. Whisky must be made from 100% malted barley.
2. Peat fire is done for malting.
3. All the whisky must come from single distillery.
4. It is unblended.
5. Must be distilled in pot still (copper)
6. Single malt whisky must also age for at least three years in oak
casks.

2. Blended malt Scotch whisky


1. A blend of two or more single malt scotch whiskies from
different distilleries together is called blended malt whisky.
3. Single grain Scotch whisky
1. A scotch whisky distilled at a single grain whisky distillery.
4. blended grain Scotch whisky
1. A blend of single grain scotch whiskies distilled at more than
one distillery.

 Wheat whiskey, made from mash that consists of at least 51% wheat.
 Bourbon whiskey made from mash that consists of at least 51% corn
(maize)

Irish whiskey
• Raw material for Irish whiskey is malted barley, unmalted barley,
corn, rye, wheat.
• Must be triple distilled for distillation in Ireland according to
Ireland law.
• Irish whiskey must be aged for at least three years in wooden
casks. However, many premium and higher-end expressions are
aged much longer, contributing to a more complex and refined
flavor profile.
• Commonly, Irish whiskey is aged in used American bourbon barrels,
which impart vanilla and caramel notes. Additionally, some
whiskeys may be aged in sherry or other wine casks, adding unique
flavors to the spirit.
• Pot still is used for distillation.

CANADA (CANADIAN WHISKY)
RAW MATERIAL IS USED FOR CANADIAN WHISKY

wooden barrels.

years Rye was the main dominant grain used in for whisky making.

Japanese whisky
Whisky production in japan began around in 1870, but the first
commercial production was in 1923 upon the opening of the
country’s first distillery, yamazaki. The actual history of real
Japanese whisky does not start until the mid-1920s when two men
— Shinjiro Torii and Masataka Taketsuru were sent to Scotland to
study with the masters the practice and art of whisky making and
joined forces to found the first authentic whisky distillery in Japan.
The style of Japanese whisky is more similar to that of scotch
whisky than other major styles of whisky.
