CONSTRUCTION SITE INDUCTION

ANNEXURE 1 - GENERAL OHS INDUCTION

Kgaugelo Kae-Kae Induction process shall be conducted by the Safety Representative on site. To start
off with, the following must be adhered to:

1. Each employee remains responsible for his own Health and Safety and for those around him.
2. A copy of all applicable legislation along with the company’s procedures is available to all
employees at the Project OHS officer or Site Agent.
3. Cell Phones are only allowed to be used by Supervisory Staff in a safe area, other Cell Phones
and I-pods are prohibited from (Company Name) projects.
4. Always follow instructions from your Supervisor – DO NOT TAKE CHANCES.
5. Always report unsafe acts or conditions to your Supervisor.
6. Always use the Protective equipment and clothing issued to you.
7. Report all injuries or incidents to your Supervisor before the end of shift, no matter how
minor they may be.
8. Do not fool around while working – Practical jokes can be dangerous.
9. Do not use alcohol or drugs at work and do not report for work intoxicated.
10. Knifes and Fire arms are not allowed in any work area.
11. No Physical assault or fighting is allowed in any work area.

12. Do not use Plant or Machinery if you are not authorised or trained to do so.
13. Do not walk underneath any suspended loads and stay out of the way of Plant and
Machinery items.
14. Always look around you when you walk on site and make sure you do not fall over
equipment, material or into holes.
15. Do not enter a barricaded area, unless you are working in the area.
16. Do not climb onto high structures, including scaffolds unless you are working on the
structure and you are wearing your safety harness.
17. Your safety harness must always be secured to a solid structure when working at unsafe
heights.
18. Report all defects on tools, equipment and machinery to your supervisor.
19. Never take shortcuts – always use the access provided and hold onto the handrails provided
at the stairs.
20. Obey all safety signs and notices.
21. Return all safety equipment back to the person who issued it to you.
22. Please keep your area clean and tidy – a tidy project is a safe project.
23. Never misuse, abuse or alter safety devices on plant, machinery or equipment and do not
ride on Plant, machinery with no seats for passengers.
24. Never sit on an open vehicle when there are loose material / tools / equipment in the back.
25. Never lift heavy objects alone – rather ask someone for help or utilise a crane.
26. Do not throw materials / tools / equipment from any height.
27. All drop off edges and openings must be barricaded – do not tamper with the barricading.
28. Only authorised persons will be allowed in the work areas.
29. Do not pollute or damage the environment – use the facilities provided for you.
30. Stay alert, follow the rules and protect yourself and other workers from accidents.
31. Be aware of any visitors on the site and if you see any person on site who does not belong
on site, remove him from site or report to your supervisor.
32. If you are unsure about safety then ask your supervisor or Safety Representative.

ANEXURE 2: INDUCTION TRAINING CHECKLIST

Requirements Check

HEALTH

Medical

All employees must be medically fit for duty

Personal protective equipment and measures must be in place before


commencement of work

All incidents must be reported to the companies risk control officer

No persons under the influence of alcohol or any other substance may be


allowed to enter or remain on site

SAFETY

Risk identification

Identify risks and hazards in the work place

Analyse and evaluate identified hazards

Plan a safe work procedure

Monitor and review plan of risks and hazards

Contractor to make available a copy of risk assessment

Company must assist contractors to facilitate work in the mutual interest of


safety for both parties

Personal protective equipment

All personal protective equipment specific to job requirements (in accordance


with the Occupational Health and Safety Act) must be issued.

Compliance regarding the provision of personal protective equipment must be


enforced by the contractor (For more information about personal protective
equipment, see section XX in your handbook)

Service connections

Written permission must be obtained from the employer to couple up to any


pipe service, e.g. water, electricity, compressed air or steam

Electrical equipment

All portable extension cables are earthed

All electrical leads, portable equipment, plugs and sockets must be maintained
in good condition

Explosive power tools

Obtain written permission from the employer to make use of explosive, or


explosives power tools.

The use of such tools must be in compliance with legislation

Hand tools

All tools must be maintained and kept in good condition

Structures

All structure must be maintained to prevent uncontrolled collapse

Ladders and scaffolding

A competent person must be appointed (in witting) to carry out scaffolding


work operations that comply with the safety standards

Keep a register to control equipment used

All ladder and scaffolding must be constructed, assembled and inspected by


competent persons

Safety belts and harnesses to be supplied by the respective firms

Roof work

All roof work must be planned and supervised

Precautionary health and safety measures must be in place when working at


heights

Overhead working

Written permission required from relevant person before commencing work


on cranes, gantries or hoists

A fall protection plan is drawn up and properly supervised

All persons working overhead must be medially fit

Slingers and slings suitable for the type of work must be supplied by the
contactor

Construction work

Construction regulations must be adhered to in terms of the Occupational


Health and Safety Act, by all relevant parties (See section xx for more
information on construction regulations)

Asbestos

No work should be carried out using asbestos mixture materials without prior
consultation and permission from the company and the Risk Control Officer.
(See section xx for more information on asbestos regulations)

ENVIRONMENT

Waste

Contractor to supply waste management plan that includes:

 a brief description of the project


 a detailed list of waste generated
 any fuel to be stored on site
 measures to prevent spillage, and
 a plan of how different types of waste are to be disposed of
All chemical, infectious, radioactive, general waste, building rubble and glass
must be disposed of in appropriate containers and/or placed in demarcated
areas

Waste must be removed to registered waste disposal sites

To avoid spillages, fuel or chemicals must be stored appropriately

Pollution

Should a spillage/leakage occur, the incident must be reported to the risk


control officer and contract manager and spillage procedure initiated

The contractor must ensure that no contamination of soil, air and water occurs

On completion of the work, an inspection will be performed to ensure that the


worksite has been cleaned up

The contractor is to ensure that no detrimental effects or contamination of
soil, air or water occurs as a result of any activities performed by himself or his
employees

Chemical waste is not be allowed to enter the storm-water drains or any other
normal drainage system

Non biodegradable waste and regular waste must be removed from worksite

Bins are provided to keep the worksite litter-free

Inspection of worksite will be performed after completion of the project

Any cost occurring after remedial action shall be claimed from the contractor

ROAD TRAFFIC RULES

General road traffic rules will apply on the companies premises in accordance
with the Road Traffic Act

All drivers must be in possession of a driver’s license applicable to the class of


vehicle driven

Seat belts must be worn at all times

Contractors must adhere to indicated speed limits and signs

All passengers in trucks or LDV’s must be seated with no part of their bodies
overhanging the sides of the vehicle or in any position that could place them at
risk

Drivers must ensure that all loads are secured using recognised methods

A red flag must be visible from the extreme end of a protruding load

Transporting of passengers on trailers is prohibited

Contractors must adhere to parking regulations as stipulated by the company

SECURITY

Contractors will be issued with identification cards to enter and exit premises

No identification cards may be duplicated or swapped

Movement of contractors is restricted to the area of work

Contractors will be removed from the premises, and charges laid, for
intoxication, drug abuse or theft of company property

Random vehicle and body searches may be carried out

Fire arms and other weapons are prohibited on site

FIRE PREVENTION

No open fires for cooking and heating are allowed

Permission must be obtained for the use of an open flame, i.e. gas cutting, gas
welding, arc welding, etc.

Fire fighting equipment provided by the company may not be removed or


damaged

Fire hydrant hoses are to be used only for fire fighting purposes

All fire escape routes must be kept free from obstruction and fire equipment
must be accessible at all times

Extinguish fire immediately to prevent spreading of fire and possible injury

Any flammable liquids must be reported and stored in an approved flammable


storage container and room

HYGIENE AND HOUSE KEEPING

Smoking, eating and drinking are allowed in designated areas only

Appropriate dwelling and ablution facilities are to be provided by the


contractor in the case of building projects. In other cases, existing facilities are
to be used and should be kept clean and tidy by the contractor

Good general house keeping rules should be adhered to

CONFIDENTIALITY

Any information or data disclosed to or required by the contractor will be kept


in confidence

Confidential documents, drawings, etc, obtained to carry out the project must
be returned to the company on completion or on request

Any documents lost must be reported immediately to the risk control officer

No information shall be disclosed to any unauthorised third parties without the


prior, written consent of the company

INSURANCE

The contractor should have his own insurance for equipment, vehicles and
employees or a minimum of 3rd party insurance
