World War I and II - Full Story from the Beginning
Introduction
World War I (1914-1918) and World War II (1939-1945) were two of the most destructive conflicts in human
history. Together, they changed the political, economic, and social landscape of the world.
World War I - The Beginning
World War I began in 1914 after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary.
Tensions had been building in Europe due to alliances, militarism, imperialism, and nationalism. Major
powers like Britain, France, Russia, and Germany were pulled into war through complex treaties.
World War I - Major Events
The war was fought mainly in trenches across Europe. New deadly weapons like machine guns, tanks,
poison gas, and airplanes were used. It involved many nations and became a global conflict. The U.S. joined
the war in 1917. Germany and its allies eventually lost.
World War I - End and Aftermath
The war ended in 1918. The Treaty of Versailles in 1919 officially ended the war, blaming Germany and
forcing it to pay reparations, lose land, and limit its military. This treaty created resentment in Germany and
set the stage for World War II.
Between the Wars
After World War I, the world faced economic depression. In Germany, anger over the Treaty of Versailles and
the economic crisis helped Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party rise to power. In Italy, Benito Mussolini established
a fascist regime. Japan also grew more aggressive in Asia.

World War II - The Beginning
World War II began in 1939 when Germany invaded Poland. Britain and France declared war on Germany.
Germany used a fast and powerful method of attack called 'Blitzkrieg' to conquer much of Europe quickly.
World War II - Major Events
Germany invaded the Soviet Union in 1941. Japan attacked the U.S. at Pearl Harbor the same year, bringing
America into the war. The war spread to Africa and the Pacific. The Allies began pushing back: the Soviet
Union in the east and the U.S., UK, and others in the west.
World War II - The Holocaust
During the war, Nazi Germany carried out the Holocaust, murdering 6 million Jews and millions of others in
concentration camps. It was one of the worst genocides in history.
World War II - End of the War
Germany surrendered in May 1945 after being invaded from both sides. In August 1945, the U.S. dropped
atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan. Japan surrendered in September, officially ending World
War II.
Aftermath and Impact
World War II caused massive destruction and loss of life. It led to the Cold War between the U.S. and the
Soviet Union. The United Nations was created to prevent future wars. Europe was rebuilt, and many colonies
around the world gained independence.
