The Spread of HIV/AIDS
Around the World
by Sofie and Aideé
Guns, Germs, and Steel Episode 3
How HIV/AIDS Started
● HIV started in chimpanzees as SIV, or Simian
Immunodeficiency Virus. Because of the
conditions in Africa, the virus mutated and
spread to humans, now known as HIV, or
Human Immunodeficiency Virus.
● AIDS is a more severe form of HIV, known as
Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome. It is less
controllable than HIV, so if you have HIV you
need to make sure you don’t get AIDS.
Symptoms
● HIV/AIDS doesn’t really kill people; it just makes
it easier for other diseases to penetrate their
immune system.
● What HIV/AIDS does is weaken a person’s
immune system, so it is harder to fight off other
diseases. With HIV/AIDS, even a common cold
can be lethal.
Cures
● HIV/AIDS can’t be cured once you get infected,
but the symptoms can be slowed down.
● Vaccines are provided to prevent HIV/AIDS, but
in developing countries, this is usually too late.
Why Some Areas Are
More Hard-Hit
● Some areas of the world are more hard-hit than
others because of education and lack of
resources.
● If people are educated, they know how to be
careful and not transmit the disease to others.
● If there was not such a huge lack of resources
and means to pay for these resources,
HIV/AIDS could be more successfully prevented.
