ABOUT THE PLAY:
Into the Woods, the beloved musical by Stephen Sondheim and
James Lapine, masterfully weaves together familiar tales—
Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, and
Rapunzel—with the original story of a childless Baker and his
Wife, crafting a hauntingly resonant fairytale for the modern age.
As each character chases a personal wish, they soon discover
that every desire comes at a cost, forcing them to confront the
complexities of longing, loss, and unintended consequences.
This intricate fable delves into themes of collective responsibility
and the moral tension between self-interest and community care,
illuminating the ripple effects of individual choices on both
human lives and the natural world. In this dark and atmospheric
new production, these ideas will be further deepened through the
inclusion of a spectral ensemble of forest spirits, transforming
the woods into a sentient, ever-watchful presence.
CHARACTER BREAKDOWN:
*please review carefully, as character doubling will be unique to
this production
*ages listed are general guidelines, not strict restrictions
NARRATOR (Any Gender, Any Age - minimal singing) A stereotypical
storyteller, warm and inviting, with excellent oratory skills. Serves as a
meta-theatrical voice and observer. *please note: for those familiar with
the show, this production will NOT be doubling the Narrator and
Mysterious Man- these will be played by two different actors
MYSTERIOUS MAN (Male, 40s-60s - Baritone G2 – E4) A haunted,
mysterious figure who roams through the woods. Revealed to be The
Baker’s absentee father, he symbolizes guilt, regret, and generational
cycle of trauma. *please note: for those familiar with the show, this
production will NOT be doubling the Narrator and Mysterious Man- these
will be played by two different actors
CINDERELLA (Female, 20s-30s - Soprano G3-G5) A young, earnest,
but quirky maiden who is constantly mistreated by her stepmother and
stepsisters. Dreaming of escape, she navigates between fantasy and
self-awareness. She doesn’t quite fit in anywhere, and struggles to
understand her desires, her voice, and herself. While she may look
beautiful in a ballgown, she is distinctly uncomfortable and out of place
in the finery. Vocally bright, lyrical soprano requiring both clarity and
warmth. Looking for three vocal tones: light and airy with apprehensive
excitement, fully supported lower lower register with angst, and bright
and focused with confidence.
JACK (Male, 15-30 - Tenor B2 – G4) A naïve but big-hearted young
man who seeks adventure. Energetic, bright-eyed, and a bit simple, he
often acts without thinking. Loves his cow more than anything in the
world. Starts out young and innocent, but is forced to grow up rapidly
over the course of the show. Vocally, looking for a clear high tenor with
youthful energy and bounce. *note: open to any gender actor to play this
role
JACK’S MOTHER (Female, 40s-50s - Mezzo-Soprano Bb3-Gb5)
Browbeating and weary, Jack’s protective mother who is independent,
bold, and strong-willed. Practical and anxious, striving to survive in a
world out of balance.
THE BAKER (Male, 23-35 - Baritone Ab2 – G4) A well-meaning,
earnest, but also harried and insecure man who longs for a child. He
loves his wife but often underestimates her in his adherence to
traditional gender roles. Vocally warm, grounded, and emotionally
expressive with genuine emotion; baritenor feel.
THE BAKER’S WIFE (Female, 20-35 - Mezzo-Soprano F3 – G5) Smart,
determined, and pragmatic woman who wishes to be a mother. She is
willing to blur moral lines to fulfill her desire for a family. Probably
works too hard. Probably smarter than most of the people around her,
but tries to be nice about it. Vocally has a strong belt/mix with need,
comedic talk singing, and almost lyric hopefulness with resolve;
intelligent and emotionally agile.
LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD (Female, 15-25. Mezzo-Soprano: Bb3 –
F5) A young girl who is strong-willed, quick-witted, fearless, bold, and
brash: she begins innocent but quickly matures, transforming from a
proper young lady into a feral, somewhat cynical wolf-hunting woman.
Her path through the woods parallels a loss of innocence and
deepening awareness. Comedic timing essential. Vocally requires a
strong belt, with a mix of innocence and sass. Looking for precise
diction, great breath control, and a clear, bright belt/mix. Bold choices
encouraged.
THE WITCH (Female, 30s-40s. Mezzo-Soprano/Alto F3 – G5) A
powerful, morally complex figure. Straightforward and aggressive. The
obsessive adopted mother/protector of Rapunzel. She is able to see
the world for what it truly is and harbors deep wisdom, but is
hampered in her ability to wield this wisdom against the weight of her
pain. Not afraid to be truly scary and disturbing. Vocally demanding
and versatile; requires legit singing, strong, powerful belt with mix, and
sharp character delivery. Looking for a strong sense of timing and
extremely confident vocal ease. Bold choices encouraged.
WOLF/CINDERELLA’S PRINCE (Male, 25-40. Baritone B2 – F4)
Wolf: Hungry and insatiable hunter who takes advantage of the weak
by misleading and captivating his prey. A predator symbolizing danger
and unchecked desire. Vocally seductive and complex.
Prince: Vain and charming, a disloyal lover who is always searching for
the next new, exciting thing He represents performative heroism and
detachment from consequence. Vocally smooth, charming, with a
slightly over-the-top vocal style.
*note: there is a chance we will split these roles up to be played by two
separate actors, TBD based on auditions .
RAPUNZEL (Female, 20-30. Soprano B3 – A5) A loopy-but-lovely
maiden who is sheltered by the Witch and terribly lonely. She yearns to
experience the World. Fragile and isolated, her story centers on
control, freedom, and trauma. Vocally very high, clear, classical lyrical
soprano with sustained notes and operatic tone.
RAPUNZEL’S PRINCE (Male, 25-40. Baritone/Tenor C3 – E4) Just as
vain and gorgeous as his Prince brother, he is always chasing the
newest, most exciting endeavor. Emotional and dramatic, also craving
idealized love without depth. Vocally similar to Cinderella’s Prince; may
sing slightly higher in harmony.
MILKY WHITE (Female, Any Age, Movement-Based/Non-Speaking,
Possible Ensemble Singing) Milky White is Jack’s beloved cow and his
closest companion. In this production, Milky White will be played by a
female (or nonbinary) actor in a movement-based, non-speaking role.
Experience with movement, dance, puppetry, and/or physical comedy
is a plus. Milky White should feel both endearingly animal-like and
deeply human in spirit.
ENSEMBLE ROLES
This production will include an Ensemble of nine “Spirits” who
embody the forest as a sentient, reactive force. The spirits shift
between guiding, warning, and haunting the human characters. They
manipulate the set and environment to reflect the forest’s changing
mood and to show the changes made to the natural world by the
human characters. Movement/dance experience strongly preferred.
These will be essential and demanding roles which may require being
onstage for most of the show. All ensemble/forest spirits will play
additional roles throughout- specific doubling listed below (NOTE:
doubling subject to change after auditions):
SPIRIT 1/CINDERELLA’S MOTHER (Female, 20s-40s, Soprano E4-
F4) *strong mover preferred
SPIRIT 2/CINDERELLA’S STEPMOTHER (Female, 40s-60s,
ensemble singing, Mezzo)
SPIRIT 3/FLORINDA (Female, 20s-30s, ensemble singing, Mezzo/alto
with wide range) *strong dancer/mover
SPIRIT 4/LUCINDA (Female, 20s-30s, ensemble singing, Mezzo/alto
with wide range) *strong dancer/mover
SPIRIT 5/SNOW WHITE (Female, 20s-30s, ensemble singing, any
range) *strong dancer preferred, ideally with modern dance experience
SPIRIT 6/SLEEPING BEAUTY (Female, 20s-30s, ensemble singing,
any range) *strong dancer preferred, ideally with modern dance
experience
SPIRIT 7/CINDERELLA’S FATHER (Male, 40s-60s, ensemble singing,
any range)
SPIRIT 8/THE STEWARD (Any Gender, Any Age, ensemble singing,
any range) *strong dancer/mover
SPIRIT 9/GRANNY (Female, Any Age, ensemble singing. any range)
*strong dancer preferred, ideally with modern dance experience, strong
comedic/character acting
