UNIT- I 10 Lectures
Introduction: Need for inspection-types of inspection systems-quality of inspection-reliability of defect
detection-benefits of non-destructive test examination
Liquid Penetrant Inspection (LPI): Introduction-principles of penetrant inspection-characteristics of
a penetrant-water-washable system-post-emulsification system-solvent-removable system-surface
preparation and cleaning-penetrant application-development-advantages and limitations-range of
applications
Learning Outcomes: At the end of this unit, the student will be able to
1. explain the benefits of Non-Destructive Testing Methods (L2)
2. describe the characteristics of penetrants, developers, emulsifiers and washing system (L2)
3. describe the types of defects that are visualized using LPI technique (L2)
UNIT- II
Magnetic Particle Inspection: Introduction-magnetization-magnetization methods-continuous and
residual methods-sensitivities-demagnetization-magnetic particles-applications-advantages and
limitations of magnetic particle inspection
Eddy Current Testing: Introduction-principles of eddy current inspection-coil impedance-lift-off factor
and edge effects-skin effect-inspection frequency-coil arrangements-inspection probes-types of circuits-
reference pieces-phase analysis-display methods-typical applications of eddy current techniques
Learning Outcomes: At the end of this unit, the student will be able to
1. describe the procedure to magnetize and demagnetize a test piece (L2)
2. explain the steps to conduct MPI (L2)
3. explain the principle of eddy current testing (L2)
UNIT- III 10 Lectures
Radiography: Introduction-uses of radiography-some limitations of radiography-principles of
radiography-radiation sources-production of X-rays-X-ray spectra-γ-radiation sources-attenuation of
radiation-radiographic equivalence, shadow formation, enlargement and distortion, radiographic film and
paper
Xeroradiography-fluoroscopy-exposure factors-radiographic screens-identification markers and Image
Quality Indicators-Inspection of simple shapes-inspection of complex shapes-viewing and interpretation
of radiographs-the radiation hazard-protection against radiation-measurement of radiation received by
personnel
Learning Outcomes: At the end of this unit, the student will be able to
1. explain the production of X-rays (L2)
2. discuss the source, properties and film characteristics of X-rays (L2)
3. explain the precautions to be taken in using radiography (L2)
UNIT- IV 10 Lectures
Ultrasonic Testing: Introduction-nature of sound-wave velocity-wave length-generation of ultrasound-
characteristics of an ultrasonic beam-sound waves at interfaces-sound attenuation-display systems-
probe construction-types of display-inspection techniques-identification of defects-immersion testing-
sensitivity and calibration-reference standards-surface condition-some applications of ultrasonic testing
Learning Outcomes: At the end of this unit, the student will be able to
1. explain the generation of ultrasonic waves and associated principles (L2)
2. describe the steps in ultrasonic testing (L2)
3. discuss applications of ultrasonic testing (L2)
UNIT- V 10 Lectures
Acoustic Emission Technique (AET): principle of AET, technique, instrumentation, sensitivity,
applications.
Thermography: basic principle, detectors and equipment, techniques, applications, thermal imaging
for condition monitoring of industrial component.
Leak testing: measurement of leakage, leak testing methods, bubble testing, helium leak detector.
Learning Outcomes: At the end of this unit, the student will be able to
1. explain the working principle of AET (L2)
2. describe the procedure to be followed in thermography (L2)
3. Discuss the methods of leak testing (L2)
