Unit 2

Vertical Farming-Unit Overview

Types:
1. Hydroponics: Growing plants in a nutrient-rich water solution.
2. Aeroponics: Growing plants with roots suspended in the air, misted with
nutrient solution.
3. Aquaponics: Combining fish farming and hydroponics in a symbiotic
environment.

Green Facade
A green facade is a wall covered with climbing plants. It includes:
- Types: Direct (plants grow directly on the wall) and indirect (plants grow on a
support structure).
- Components: Support structures (trellises, cables), climbing plants, irrigation
systems.

Living/Green Wall
A living wall consists of modular panels with plants growing in soil or a substrate.
Types include:
- Modular Green Wall: Prefabricated panels with integrated plants and irrigation.
- Vegetated Mat Wall: Plants grow in a mat of fibrous material.

Structures and Components for Green Wall Systems

1. Plant Selection: Choosing appropriate species based on climate, light, and
maintenance.
2. Growing Media: Soil or soilless media (e.g., coco coir, peat moss) for plant
support and nutrient supply.
3. Irrigation and Nutrition: Drip irrigation systems and nutrient delivery to
sustain plant growth.

Design, Light, and Benefits of Vertical Gardening

- Design: Vertical structures to maximize space, aesthetic integration into
architecture.
- Light: Adequate natural or artificial light for photosynthesis.
- Benefits: Space optimization, air purification, temperature regulation, aesthetic
enhancement.
Roof Garden and Its Types
1. Extensive Roof Gardens: Lightweight, low-maintenance, shallow soil with
drought-resistant plants.
2. Intensive Roof Gardens: Deeper soil, more diverse plant species, higher
maintenance, can include trees and shrubs.

Kitchen Garden
A small-scale garden, usually near the kitchen, for growing herbs, vegetables, and
fruits for household use.

Hanging Baskets
Containers suspended in the air, often planted with flowers, herbs, or small
vegetables, ideal for decorative purposes and space-saving.

House Plants / Indoor Plants

Plants grown indoors for decoration, air purification, and psychological benefits.
Examples include spider plants, and peace lilies.
