WEEK 1

Month.

During our first week of on-the-job training at the Nueva Vizcaya Bureau of Fire
Protection Provincial Office, we were introduced to the daily routines and responsibilities of
being part of the BFP. We started with an orientation where we learned about the office
rules, as well as the mission and vision of the bureau. We also discussed the different
ranks, how promotions work, and the salaries involved, which gave us a better
understanding of how the organization is structured.

We were lucky to take part in several activities related to Fire Prevention Month. One
of the highlights was joining a motorcade that promoted fire safety awareness in the
community. We also attended lectures on the basics of fire behavior, how to use different
types of fire extinguishers, and how to prevent fires. These were followed by hands-on
training, where we learned how to properly handle fire hoses and maintain fire safety
equipment.

Another part of the week that stood out was our lecture on arson investigation. As
criminology students, we found this really interesting since it connected with what we study
in school. We also helped out in a fire safety seminar for parole and probation clients, which
gave us a chance to interact with the community and share what we’ve learned.

Our first week at the BFP was a great learning experience. It gave us a clearer view
of what it’s like to work in the field of fire safety and public service. We are thankful for the
warm welcome and the guidance we received, and we’re excited to keep learning in the
weeks ahead.
WEEK 2

Our second week of training at the Nueva Vizcaya Bureau of Fire Protection
Provincial Office was more physically active and focused on developing practical firefighting
skills. We started the week with a quick review of fire hose parts and an introduction to
ladder safety. This was followed by actual exercises on hose throwing and ladder carrying.
These activities were physically challenging but taught us the importance of proper
technique, teamwork, and endurance. We also had a session on the different parts of the
Personal Protective Equipment, where we practiced putting on and removing the gear.
Wearing it ourselves gave us a real sense of how difficult but necessary it is for safety
during operations.
Midweek, we assisted in the Fire Square Roadshow, a community program focused
on fire safety education. We helped prepare the materials and assisted with the flow of the
event. It was a great opportunity to see how the BFP reaches out to the public and
promotes awareness in a hands-on way. Aside from these events, we also helped clean the
station and the event venues. These tasks may seem simple, but they taught us how
discipline and cooperation play a big role in maintaining order in the workplace.
On the last day of the week, we have a lecture on first aid. This session stood out to
many of us because it showed how firefighters must also be ready to respond to medical
emergencies. We learned basic techniques that could potentially save lives during rescue
situations, which added another layer of respect for the work firefighters do every day. After
the lecture, we joined another outreach activity before heading back to the station and
doing clean-up duties again.
This week gave us a deeper look into the realities of the job. It was more than just
learning how to use equipment, it was about being physically prepared, working well with
others, and serving the community with discipline and care. We’re learning not just to act
like firefighters, but to think and serve like them too.
