PART1: ART HISTORY

ITEM 1

The ancient Egyptian civilization saw many developments in the field of art for thousands of
years since 3000 (B.C.E). Many people visit Egypt to witness the great skills the ancient
Egyptians used in making art. Hence, their work has inspired many gerations of artists around
the world including you. However in your community today, Artists make works of art with less
impact in society and the nation at large.

Therefore, the UGANDA VISUAL ARTIST’S FORUM has organized a workshop for artists and art
students aiming at improving art and its impact in our society with inspiration from the ancient

TASK:

ASSUME you are appointed one of the speakers, make a write up of the information you would present
to your fellow artists in the workshop.

Item 2

Contemporary art changed the perspective of art in Uganda from that of the modern art
period. This came true with the start of the Margaret trowel school of art at Makerere
university. Contemporary artists adopted new styles and techniques of making different forms
of art so as to express their feelings and ideas that played a great role towards unity of
Ugandans and there societies. But, during a small research recently, many Ugandans ascertain
the view that Ugandas’ contemporary art is under developed hence it has had low influence on
udandas’ growth and development.

Task:

Make a write up challenging the view at which Ugandans perceive the role of contemporary art in
Uganda.

PART2: STUDIOTECHNOLOGY

ITEM 3

MZEE kitandwe is a local visual artist who is struggling to get market for his artworks. There
was a day he was commissioned to make a multi media decorative artworks for wall hanging.
Even though he did the work , the client refused to pay saying he didn’t prepare the artworks for
him hence calling them un finished. To make matters worse, he had no idea of the marketing
channels through which his artworks can reach customers easily.

Task
Analyze for mzee kitandwe how best he can present his artworks to his clients and help him to solve
the challenge of low market for his artworks.

Item 4

The craft of basketry cut across cultures in Africa. When you go to your village its had not find a
home without a basket of any type. Meaning they play a great role in day to day life. The
environment and purpose, determines the materials and the techniques people use to make
them. In the village of wakyayilaki, priscillars’ granny was a basket weaver; she was visited by
art students of a neighbouring school to seek knowledge from her. Unfortunately, the granny
could not express herself in English which students could understand but rather she used
luganda.

TASK

Document all the information the granny explained on the types of baskets she makes for your
fellow student to understand
