Read the text below and answer the questions that follow.
A Baker’s Dozen
Mrs Taylor : May I have a dozen of your Saint Nicholas cookies?
Narrator : (He counted out twelve cookies. He started to wrap them, but the woman
reached out and stopped him).
Mrs Taylor : I asked for a dozen. You have given me only twelve.
Van Amsterdam : Everyone knows that a dozen is twelve.
Mrs Taylor : But I say a dozen is thirteen. Give me one more.
Van Amsterdam : My customers get exactly what they pay for.
Mrs Taylor : Keep the cookies. However honest you may be, your heart is small and
your fist is tight. Fall again, mount again, learn how to count again.
Narrator : (From that day, everything went wrong in the bakery. Bread rose too high
or not at all. Meat pies were sour or sweet. Cakes cracked and
crumbled or were chewy. Cookies were burnt or doughy.)
Van Amsterdam : (to himself) That old woman has cursed me with bad luck.
Narrator : (A year passed. The baker grew poorer and poorer. Since he sold little,
he baked little, and his shelves were nearly bare. His last few
customers slipped away).
Van Amsterdam : I wish Saint Nicholas could help me now.
Narrator : (Then he closed his bakery and went sadly to bed. That night, he had a
dream that changed his style. The next morning, the baker rose early,
and he baked all kinds of pastries. Mrs Taylor walked in).
Mrs Taylor : May I have a dozen of your Saint Nicholas cookies?
: In great excitement, Van Amsterdam counted out twelve cookies—and
one more.
Van Amsterdam : In this bakery, from now on, a dozen is thirteen.
Mrs Taylor : (smiling) You have learned to count well. You will surely be rewarded.

QUESTION 3: SUMMARY (5 marks)
• Read the text below.
• In 5 sentences (50-60 words) summarise the impact of our kindness on others Write in
full sentences
The Impact of our Kindness on Others
When we practice kindness, it doesn’t just help us. It helps those around us as well.
Kindness can have a ripple effect, spreading from individual to individual and making a
positive impact on the world.
Kindness makes others feel good. Kind words, acts of kindness, or even a smile can brighten
someone’s day and make them feel good. When we show kindness, it helps others to feel
appreciated. It lifts their spirits when times are tough.
Kindness can help to create a safe, supportive environment where people are free to
express themselves and be their authentic selves. When we’re kind to others, it makes them
feel secure in our presence. It’s easier for them to open up when they trust that they won’t be
judged for their thoughts or ideas.
When people observe acts of kindness, it makes them want to be kind too. It encourages
them to pass on the same kindness that was shown to them by doing nice things for others.
They might even be inspired to do something that they wouldn’t have done before.
When kindness is practised in the workplace, people are more likely to work together and
help each other.
