What's after Seven?
Have you ever needed help with math? The next

mistakes. Let's go to Japan and learn more about
how amazing Ashiya is. Ashiya lives at the Ueno
RV·C·06
Zoo in Tokyo. This is where it was discovered that
MP3
Ashiya could do math. Many animals, not just
elephants, can count things. But other animals can
only count to about three or four. Ashiya can count
up to seven! She is a very smart elephant.

How do we know if Ashiya can really count? We

can't just give her a math test, can we? Actually,
that's exactly what happened. A university
professor thought of the idea to test Ashiya using
apples. The professor put two buckets in front of
Ashiya. Ashiya couldn't see inside the buckets

into one of the buckets. One by one, they dropped in

the apples. In the second bucket, they put in seven
apples. If Ashiya really can count, then she will pick
the bucket with more apples. The workers repeated
the experiment many times.

Sometimes, they would even switch the buckets.

They were trying to confuse Ashiya. But even so,
Ashiya almost always selected the basket with more
apples. She scored an 87 percent on her math test.
There could be only one reason for this. Ashiya must
have been counting the apples as they were dropped
into the bucket. She must also know that seven
apples are more than five apples. Everyone was
shocked . They couldn't believe that an elephant
could do math!

DYNAMIC EARTH
Lesson 6 Fossil Fuels
What do plants have to do with pollution? Aren't
plants good for the Earth? The plants we see around
us help keep the air clean. But plants from 300
million years ago are polluting the planet. How is
this possible ? Let's learn about how plants fro1n
RV·C·12
long ago can cause pollution today.
MP3

We require a lot of energy to heat our homes, run

our cars, and light our cities. Most of this energy
comes from fossil fuels like coal, oil, and natural gas.
Burning fossil fuels may give us the energy we need,
but this also creates a lot of air pollution. When
fossil fuels are burned, they release harmful gases
that mix with our clean air.

50 Lesson 6

urban industrial
This is a big problem in urban areas where there are remains form

many people. Huge amounts of fossil fuels are
burned in big cities. Industrial cities like London,
England in the late 1800's had so much smoke in the
air that it was hard to see the sun. Many people got
sick and had trouble breathing. So what does all this
have to do with plants?

Well, fossil fuels are formed from plants. Over

time, plant remains change into coal, oil, and natural
gas. But this process takes millions of years. That
means fossil fuels can't be replaced quickly or
easily. Today we are using fossil fuels faster than
they are being made. One day, the Earth will run out.
Let's conserve our fossil fuels to make sure this
doesn't happen.

ROBOTS
Lesson 11 Early Robots
Many people think of robots as modern 1nachines,
but they have been around for a long time. Many
early robots were toys. They couldn't do very much.
But as time went on, robots began doing some
impressive things.

Computer Movies
Have you ever seen an old horror movie? Did the

being made with computer graphics.

Before

movie. Usually
the creature
looked phony .
The audience wasn't fooled and this made the movie
less fun to watch. But with computer graphics, all
this changed. The monsters in movies started to look
realistic . Movies became scarier and more exciting.

In the movie, Jurassic Park, the heroes have to run

away from a hungry dinosaur. Audiences were so
frightened that they were on the edge of their seats.
It looked like a real dinosaur was chasing the people
in the movie! Of course, there wasn't really a 30 foot

believed that there was. The dinosaur looked
amazingly lifelike . It could breathe, swallow, and
even move its eyes. No one could distinguish what

Computer graphics also let us make more creative

movies. The Day after Tomorrow is a movie about
the earth freezing. Before computer graphics,
making a movie like this would have been very
difficult. How do you cover the whole world with
snow? This kind of scenery is only possible with
computer graphics. Nowadays, it seems like there is
no limit to the kinds of movies that we can make.
Thanks to computer graphics, we can make a movie
about almost anything.
