1.​ Definition of Tourism
Tourism is an activity in purpose to provide services, objects, or interacting product
of tourism or any kind of field that relevant with the industry.
According to Professor Salah Wahab (In Yoeti, 1996) Tourism is a proposeful human
activity that serve as alink between people either within one so mecountry or
beyond the geographical limits or state. It involves the temporary displacement of
people to other region for satisfaction of varied need other than exciting
arenumareted. Simply that it is activity of traveling to a place for pleasure,
exploring new places, experienced different culture and relax.

Terminologically, tourism is defined as travel from one place to another and then
returning to the point of origin, carried out for various purposes. There are several
terms related to tourism, such as:

➔​ Travel​: refers to the act of going on a journey.


➔​ Tour​ ​ : refers to a trip from one place to another.​
Traveler​ : a person who goes on a journey.​
Tourism​ : refers to all matters related to travel and tourism​
​ ​ Activities.

Tourist destinations or tourist attractions are places or objects that have the
ability to attract people and serve as the main reasons for their visit.

Tourist destinations can take the form of natural attractions such as mountains,
seas, rivers, beaches, lakes, and waterfalls, or historical sites such as museums,
castles, and other similar places.

2.​ Types of Tours

1. Based on the number of participants, tours are classified into:

●​ Individual Tour​
A tour arranged for a single person traveling alone, according to their
personal schedule and interests.
●​ Family Group Tour​
A tour organized for members of a family traveling together as a group.
●​ Group Tour​
A tour involving a group of people, often strangers, who travel together with
a fixed itinerary, usually organized by a travel agency.
2. Based on how the tour is arranged:

●​ Pre-arranged Tour​
A tour that has been planned in advance, usually with a fixed schedule and
itinerary.
●​ Package Tour​
A tour that includes transportation, accommodation, meals, and activities
bundled together for a set price.
●​ Coach Tour​
A tour where participants travel primarily by bus (coach) to visit multiple
destinations, often guided.
●​ Special Arranged Tour​
A customized tour tailored to the specific needs or interests of the client.
●​ Optional Tour​
A tour offered in addition to the main tour package, which participants may
choose to join or skip.

3. Based on the purpose of travel:

●​ Holiday Tour​
A leisure tour intended for relaxation and enjoyment, usually during
vacation time.
●​ Familiarization Tour​
A tour designed for travel agents or media representatives to experience a
destination firsthand.
●​ Educational Tour​
A tour organized for learning purposes, often by schools, colleges, or
institutions.
●​ Scientific Tour​
A tour conducted for research or scientific exploration purposes.
●​ Pilgrimage Tour​
A religious journey to sacred or holy sites based on spiritual beliefs.
●​ Special Mission Tour​
A tour with a specific goal or purpose, such as diplomatic or humanitarian
missions.
●​ Special Program Tour​
A tour involving unique or thematic activities, like cultural exchange or
international youth programs.
●​ Hunting Tour​
A tour focused on hunting wildlife in designated legal areas, usually with
permits and guides.​

4. Based on how the tour is conducted:

●​ Excursion​
A short journey or trip, usually a day trip, taken for leisure or educational
purposes.
●​ Safari Tour​
A tour, typically in Africa, involving wildlife viewing and nature exploration.
●​ Cruise Tour​
A tour that takes place on a cruise ship, visiting several destinations while
traveling by sea.
●​ Youth Tour​
A tour specifically designed for young people, often educational or cultural in
nature.
●​ Marine Tour​
A tour focused on the marine environment, including activities like diving,
snorkeling, or island hopping.

Based on the explanation about forms of tours, According to Suwantoro (1997) the
motivation for someone to travels are :
-​ The desire for vacation and recreation
-​ The need for education and research purposes
-​ Religious motivations or spiritual needs
-​ The pursuit of health and medical treatment
-​ Interest in culture and the arts
-​ Security or safety-related purposes
-​ Family-related needs or obligations
-​ Political interests or missions

5. Popular Types of Tourism in Indonesia:

●​ Ecotourism​
A form of responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment
and supports local communities. Popular in places like national parks and
nature reserves.
●​ Cultural Tourism​
Tourism that focuses on experiencing the cultural heritage, traditions, arts,
and lifestyles of local people. Common in destinations like Yogyakarta and
Bali.
●​ Adventure Tourism​
Involves exploration or travel to remote and exotic areas, often including
physical activities such as hiking, diving, rafting, or mountain climbing.
●​ Business Tourism​
Travel related to business purposes, including meetings, site visits, training,
or corporate events.
●​ MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions)​
A specialized branch of business tourism focused on organizing and
attending professional events and large-scale gatherings.
●​ Special Interest Tourism​
Tourism motivated by specific interests or hobbies, such as culinary tours,
photography trips, or bird watching.
●​ Voluntourism (Volunteer Tourism)​
A type of tourism where travelers participate in volunteer work to help local
communities, often involving social, educational, or environmental projects.​

3.​ The Elements in Tourism Industry


According to James J. Spillane (1987) there are 5 important elements of tourism :
1.​ Attractions.
There are 2 types of attractions, site and event. ​
Site attractions is located in one place as permanent building such as Zoo
Park, Museum, Recreational Park etc. ​
Event attractions are build for temporary and the location can move to other
place easily according to the needs such as shows, exhibition, festivals etc.
2.​ Facilities
Facilities are often located nearby a tourist destination. During a trip,
travelers or tourist needs a place to sleep, to have meal, a quick rinse which
these needs leads to the idea of accomodation business which then grows the
other supporting business such as Laundry, restaurants, transportation
service, tour and travel company, souvenir shops, or any other recreational
facilities.
3.​ Infrastructure
Infrastructure are cannot be separated from facility. This is important part to
support tourism industry as to fullfill tourist, customer needs. These
infrastructure are include :
-​ Water system
-​ Communication
-​ Health facilities
-​ Electrical and energy sources
-​ Streets
4.​ Transportation ​
Transportation plays a crucial role in the tourism industry as it supports
the need for mobility from one place to another. In the tourism sector,
transportation can be by land, sea, or air. Land transportation, such as buses,
minibuses, private cars, or trains, is a common option for travelers who wish
to move from one region to another. Land transport is often preferred
because it is more affordable, flexible, and comfortable.​
Sea transportation, including cruise ships or conventional boats, is generally
used for inter-island travel, especially in regions dominated by water where it
serves as the main means of transport. However, traveling by sea usually
takes longer.​
Air transportation, such as airplanes, is chosen by travelers going abroad or
traveling between distant islands to reduce travel time. However, the cost of
air travel is quite high, so it is advisable to prepare a sufficient budget when
planning to travel by plane.
5.​ Hospitality
Hospitality can be defined as the provision of friendly service, ensuring
safety and comfort for guests who are visiting or traveling. Hospitality is
essential for any company or accommodation in the tourism industry, as it
helps create a positive impression on guests. This positive experience often
leads to favorable reviews, which in turn enhances the establishment's
reputation. Satisfied guests are more likely to recommend the place to others,
thereby increasing visitor numbers and boosting profits.

4. Career in Tourism Industry


In essence, the industries around us are part of the tourism sector, serving as
support businesses or service providers for travelers. The presence of these
tourism-related industries creates various job opportunities across different
roles and companies. One of the most popular careers in the tourism industry
is that of a Tour Guide.​
A tour guide is someone who accompanies and leads tourists during their
trips, provides information about tourist sites, and takes them to interesting
places to visit—ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable travel experience.
A career as a tour guide requires specific skills and experiences, many of
which can be developed as early as vocational high school, especially in
schools offering tourism-related programs.
Strong communication skills, proficiency in at least one foreign language
(preferably English), and broad experience visiting tourist attractions,
restaurants, and accommodations are essential to ensure that clients receive
the best service and a pleasant travel experience.
A professional tour guide should have broad insight, be able to solve
problems effectively, understand manners and ethics, be friendly, know how
to present themselves properly, and maintain a neat appearance.

a. The Role of a Tour Guide​


Tour guides are the first impression of a destination for visitors. Their main
responsibilities include:

-​ Providing information, guidance, and destination recommendations.


-​ Creating enjoyable and educational experiences.
-​ Acting as cultural ambassadors, tradition preservers, and local
economic supporters.

​ ​ b. How to Start a Career as a Tour Guide

Starting a career as a tour guide involves a combination of passion,


knowledge, and communication skills. Here are the key steps to get started:

1.​ Understand the Role​


Learn what a tour guide does — guiding visitors, sharing information
about destinations, ensuring safety, and creating memorable
experiences.
2.​ Choose Your Specialty​
Decide what type of guiding you are interested in: cultural, historical,
adventure, nature-based, or city tours. Focus on destinations or topics
you are passionate about.
3.​ Gain Knowledge​
Study local history, culture, tourist attractions, and traditions. Deep
knowledge builds confidence and credibility when speaking with
tourists.
4.​ Improve Language Skills​
Master your native language and learn at least one foreign language,
especially English. Good communication is essential for guiding
international tourists.
5.​ Build Communication Skills​
Practice public speaking, storytelling, and engaging with different
types of audiences to provide lively and informative tours.
6.​ Get Certified​
Obtain a tour guide certification from a recognized institution or
tourism authority. Certification increases your credibility and
employment opportunities.
7.​ Join the Industry​
Start with local tour companies, tourism offices, or freelance
opportunities. Build experience by volunteering or working as an
assistant guide.
8.​ Promote Yourself​
Create a professional profile online, use social media to showcase
your tours, and network with other professionals in the tourism
industry.
