Dark Trespasses
T
here was a time, when no one came out to the dark heart of the woods.
But ever so slowly, year after year, mankind began to encroach upon it.
Until Baba Sova stepped in and put a stop to that nonsense. She scared
away the hunters and the loggers, one by one, until no one dared step into
her part of the wood, as they truly believed it was haunted.
She liked it there, in the dark, in the damp, in the tranquility. Just her, and
her owls, and the occasional misguided deer. It was peaceful. Quiet. Empty.
Alone. Just how she liked it.
She had almost lost count of the years she had lived there protecting the
Deep Wood until she heard the footsteps; crunching loudly, snapping twigs as
heavy-booted feet tramped through underbrush over a blanket of pine needles.
“Go see who is here,” she said to an owl friend, and he flew out for a
while to investigate.
The footsteps retreated, and she thought perhaps the person who had
stumbled close to her lair had just gotten lost.
Her owl friend came back and perched heavily upon her deceptively frail
looking shoulder and she held his weight easily. Not that she was weak, but
she was old and wise beyond her years. This hag of the Deep Wood.
“Well?” she asked.
“It was a human. It didn’t look lost. It looked like it was hunting.”
5
“A human? Here? Not acceptable.”
Baba Sova set about with the arts of Autumn and Chicanery to weave a
trap of nightmares and shadows, making the area around her home darker;
scarier; foreboding; uninhabitable looking. Anything to keep that pesky man
at bay. It usually worked.
And yet the human returned.
A month later he was back. This time, with a young girl. She was sixteen,
seventeen maybe. Wide-eyed, trusting, unwise in her too few years. Baba
Sova raised an eyebrow when she saw him luring her there, just using his
raw charisma to get her alone. She hid up in one of the old ancient trees,
perched out of view and deathly silent like her own brethren, wrapping her
gnarled aged hands around the branches and staring down at him as he
walked by.
She was slightly curious as to what he would do...until she saw him pull
the knife from under his jacket. Then, she knew, when he bent down to kiss
her, exactly where that wicked blade would go.
The girl thrashed, her blood dropped to the forest floor, plipped and
plopped on dried leaves while her feet kicked in her death throes.
The man smiled, a vicious predatory smile, and Baba Sova knew that he
would leave her there to rot. Maybe come back in the spring for her bones.
Well, he would have, if she had let him.
She had a few of her owl friends follow him home. She wanted to know
exactly where such a fiend lived.
After he cut a lock of her hair and left her to rot, after he stomped loudly
away and took the stench of the city back with him, Baba Sova swooped
down and picked the corpse up, and flew it over to the tree line. She dumped
it on the ground where the local police liked to sit in their cars and drink
their morning coffee.
The police took the bait, and Baba Sova waited, like she always did, for
justice to be meted out.
But it never came. After a year, no one found the killer. But she knew.
Her owls showed her exactly where he lived. She had them follow him. She
knew his daily routine in and out, because they told her EVERYTHING.
Annoyed that someone would do such a crime in her woods, by HER
home, she knew that she had to be the one to bring him to justice, before
that poor girl’s ghost started haunting her woods or worse.
So it was up to her to make him pay, and pay dearly he shall.
First, she called on her Glamours to leave him hopelessly lost, so he
ended up driving out of the city, and onto the dirt road that ended at the
edge of her Hollow.
It was amusing, watching the panic set in. The calm, cool demeanor of
the lady killer slowly replaced by wide-eyed terror.
Him setting foot inside her Hollow of the Deep Wood caused the forest
grow darker; tree limbs crawled out like tendrils to trap him in an ever-
shifting labyrinth.
When he was in the dead heart of it, she called upon the Wyrd and
swooped down in front of him, showing her true self; a hunched old hag of
a figure, dark spots around her eyes in a pattern like that of an owl’s face,
her nose pointed like a great beak, with tufts of feathery speckled grey hair
sticking out under her cloak hood, the ends of which fluttered like wings as
they settled down around her ancient frame.
He saw this and screamed.
“Not so brave now, are you?” she asked, with a wicked grin.
“What do you want?”
“To make you pay,” she said and stepped closer. He backed away, searched
his sheath for his knife and saw it was missing. “Looking for this?” she
asked and held it up.
He stared.
“How?”
Baba Sova tossed it towards a tree, and its limb grabbed it out of the
air and pulled it into the darkness.
“Human, these are my woods. You do not belong here. And yet, you came,
and killed an innocent girl. Shed her pure blood. And enjoyed it.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about. Just let me go!”
Liar. These types of humans always lie.
“Oh, I’ll let you go all right, after I’m done with you. Kneel,” she said and
waved her crooked talon-like hands, and the trees grabbed him and pulled
him down to his knees.
“Stop this! I didn’t do it! It wasn’t me!”
“Lair. I watched you do it. Don’t tell me you have a twin either. I know
it was you. I followed you home after you murdered her. The poor thing.
She had done nothing wrong, save trust a fool like you. She was going to
go to college, be a veterinarian. People genuinely liked her.”
“So what?”
“So, she was an innocent, a Dreamer! And you, are guilty.” she tipped
his chin up with a finger, made him stare into her burning golden eyes and
said the curse. “When next you pick up a blade, it will surely find its way
to bite deep into your tenderest flesh.”
He froze as the malocchio did its magic and wove a spell of disaster
and death around him. Sometime, sometime soon, he would die, and by his
own hand.
Baba Sova let him go then. She dropped his knife, his murder weapon,
in front of him, and disappeared into the shadows. She smiled and waited
for the screams to come. For she knew that he wouldn’t be able to leave his
murder weapon there, the evidence of his crime that he so carefully kept
hidden on his own body.
And so, the man picked up the knife with shaking hands, and death came
quickly for him.
“No, no. I don’t care why you want it done. What matters is
you trekked all the way out here with payment in hand.”

regretted doing so.
In the aftermath of the Shattering, many
of their hollows became mundane forests that

were not unheard of. Such glory days are far gone, and now a
coven comprises 5 to 6 members only.
Types of Covens
Covens come together for a multitude of reasons. The most
common are: the Conventum Bellum for mutual defense, an
Occult Parliament for delving into the mysteries of the Dream-
ing, and a Coven Sinister being dedicated to the protection of
a particular hollow.
Conventum Bellum
A Coventum Bellum is formed when an important hol-
low is under direct threat that a single Strega cannot handle
alone. These war covens focus on crippling the enemy’s will
and eliminating their ability to threaten the Hollow. Typical
tactics are terrifying guerilla warfare, using whatever Arts and
chimeric allies available to them. Once an enemy weakens, a
direct assault is staged.
The leader of the coven, titled a Strega-Bellum or war-witch,
will take to the field loaded with dross and treasures. The war-
witch will curse her foes one after another, and the coven will
trigger the curses.
Mortals are rarely the target of such war covens, especially
in the modern day where mass disappearances and groups of
injured humans can’t easily be explained away by wild animals.
Other supernaturals often find themselves at odds with the Strega,
especially Magi who covet the natural power emanating from
Hollows. Werewolves however are a special case, even a war
coven will know better than to assault a pack of werewolves.
Instead, they will approach them formally under a banner of
truce and attempt to bargain with them.
Thankfully, most werewolves respect protecting such sacred
sites, while others will bargain with the Strega thanks to ancient
kinship with the fae, or a special reverence for owls.
The most common foes of a Conventum Bellum are the
Thallain and, unfortunately, the Nunnehi. The Thallain have
grown in number significantly since the evanescence, and so
too have their attempts to despoil the scattered glades across
the world. This brings them in direct conflict with the Strega.
For their part when fighting the Thallain, the witches are even
more savage than usual (especially when defending their Hol-
lows). Some going to the point of wielding weapons of cold iron.
The Nunnehi are a different matter entirely. Sometimes
Strega will discover a Hollow of the Deep Wood in the care
of the Nunnehi, but since they believe that all such Hollows
belong to them, they will drive the Nunnehi off the land. This
often brings about a reprisal in an attempt to retake the Hollow,

leading to a cycle of violence that will escalate until one side Coven Sinister
or the other is dead. These Strega covens are an extension of the Haunters of

in other circumstances they could be polite neighbors they find
instead only blood and conflict.
Werewolves
Thankfully conflicts with werewolves are rare. Though they
both inhabit the deep parts of the wilderness, their spiritual
concerns are very unrelated. The spirit world that is spoken of
by the shapechangers is not the Dreaming. The witches could
not care less what the werewolves do with their sacred sites.
Conflict occurs when either side investigates the other’s
sacred places. To the werewolves the Hollows of the Deep Wood
seem tainted with spiritual fear and dread, and by the time they
get close enough to see that the Hollows are not defiled by dark-
ness they have already fallen into the trials of the Strega, which
is sure to raise their ire.
In much the same way a Strega can mistake the strange
spiritual phenomena of a caern for signs of a Deep Wood Hollow.
Of the werewolves that clash with the Strega, the most
pernicious are those of the Red Talons, who seem to harbor a
grudge against the witches regarding them as some sort of tainted
human to be purged.
The Uktena and Black Furies are both known to the Strega
as preservers of occult lore and spiritual mysteries, well worthy of
visiting the witches for counsel. The Black Furies are remembered
from the ancient days in Greece where the Strega aided them
as neutral oracles.
Of special note are the Fianna, the Werewolves most adroit at
dealing with the fae and this extends to the Strega who welcome
them as courteous guests.
Magi
Relations with the various Magi in the world are quite
confusing for the fae in normal times, but even more so for the
Strega. Mortal magi are troublesome at the best of times, and
seem to alternate on being utterly intrigued by the Strega to the
point of fawning over their every pronouncement, to wanting to
sweep aside the Strega and drain their hollows dry of all Glamour.
There is little particular Magi have in common, and as far as
the Strega can tell there are dozens of competing sects, faiths and
traditions among them. This leads to a very standoffish approach
from the Strega, who will make great efforts to hide behind their
veil of mystery, at least until they can figure out their guests.
Of those that frequently come into contact with the Strega
are the Verbena, mortal witches who gather into bloody handed
covens of their own and whose traditions are just as old if not
older than the Strega themselves. Relations with the Verbena are
strangely cordial, with both sides recognizing the ancient legacy
of the other and acting with professional formality.
The Magi of the Order of Hermes have been a constant
thorn in the side of the Strega since the Shattering and have
perpetrated several atrocities on the fae, including capturing them
24 Kithbook: STrega
and drain them of their Glamorous energies. Even worse, the
Magi of the Order are rarely intimidated by the trials the Strega
create to deter visitors, especially when seeking magical power.
Wraiths
As luck would have it areas where a Deep Wood Hollow
is likely to be, is also an ideal place for the shroud between the
land of the living and the land of the dead to wear thin. It is
not unheard of for the ghosts of mortals to reach out across the
shroud and interact with the Strega. This often puts the Strega
at a disadvantage, while Ghosts can see the Strega across the
barrier, the witches have no ability to see the spirits of the dead.
Ghosts that reach out are usually lone individuals making
the most of their existence in isolation, or members of fringe
groups in hiding from whatever authorities exist in the land
of the dead. Unfortunately, both sides have little to trade with
one another which keeps tensions low, and usually makes for
strange neighbors.
Demons
Something new in the world, perhaps unleashed by the Eva-
nescence, but whatever their true nature it is clear to the Strega
that they bear an uncomfortable resemblance to changelings.
House Balor claims they are ancient fae that were sealed away
after the war against the Fomorians and are now returning at
the cusp of winter. Thankfully encounters with these demons
are rare, as the so-called Fallen prefer to make their homes near
the masses of humanity.
Hunters
Appearing at around the same time as Demons, Hunter are
still an enigma to Changelings. As far as the Strega can figure
they are normal mortals cursed with the ability to see through a
changeling’s mortal mein to look upon their true faerie visage.
The Strega seem to have a knack for triggering this strange curse
when they make overt (and sometimes deadly) plays to keep
mortals from intruding in their lairs. This usually ends up with
a dead mortal, but some manifest strange abilities and injure the
Strega and escape, sometimes returning heavily armed.

Witches Brew
W
elcome little one!” said the tall ghostly owl. “It has been so long since
one of our favorite cousins has come to observe a session of parlia-
ment.” It stretched out a tattered wing, pointing to the clearing where
others of its kind gathered.
The girl beamed, biting her lip with a devilish satisfaction, before removing
her crooked spiraling witch’s hat and performing an overly dramatic bow.
The hair of her bangs are brown and black mottled like a snowy owl and
obscure the yellow night shine of her wide girlish eyes.
“Oh! Once I found out about it I couldn’t not come!” Straightening herself,
she smiled widely, the barest hint of fangs poking out from her lips. “So, I’ve
heard there is a special chair for us owly witchy types?”
“Yes, yes, of course, this way, follow me!” The ghostly Strix as it lifted
off into a slow, lazy glide towards the clearing, with an ominous mountain
peak peering over the canopy.
The owl led her to a wonderfully crafted throne of fallen logs and thistle,
where red wet intestine garlands from some poor beast hung all around it.
She took her seat of honor, sitting cross-legged, almost engulfed by its size.
Here sat the tiny witch with all due patience and decorum as the Parliament
began. The opening of the session was dreadfully boring with the strange
owls announcing new chairs for increasingly frightful sounding committees
and ministries before the real fun could begin.
27
A
n old wizened Strix, more bone and dust than feathers and dross, offered up his sug-
gestion for debate.
“There is a bridge that spans Minnesota and Wisconsin, newly repaired and re-
opened for all. The new construction is shoddy and lax. This bridge should fall allowing
the Mississippi to eat its fill of no less than twenty mortals.”
The owls went into an uproar, some attempting to negotiate the death toll up, others
down, some insisting that a certain number of dogs must also die in this catastrophe. But
eventually it was decided that the bridge would fall, and when, and how many it would kill.
Then the proper omens were scheduled to herald the disaster, for those about to die, it is
only fair that they be given the opportunity to ignore the warnings.
So the night carried on much like this, disasters being offered for debate, many approved
but others voted down for being too droll, too unlikely, or any other reason. Things began
to wind down and suggestions of new disasters were far and few between. It seemed that
this session of Parliament was about to draw to a close.
Suddenly, a great grinding noise of rock on rock filled the air, and two spotlights on
the lonely mountain peak opened up, turning night to day in the parliamentary clearing.
With a voice like an avalanche the owl that was the mountain offered its own sugges-
