UNIT II : NATURAL RESOURCES
Life here depends on Natural Resources. Water, Air,
Soil, Minerals, Forest & Minerals are all examples of
Natural Resources.
They are of Two kinds :
Renewable Resources : These can be regenerated. Eg.
Forest, Wild life, wind energy, solar energy.
Non-renewable Resources : These can not be regene –
-rated. Eg. Fossil fuels like coal, petroleum, minerals
etc.
Major Natural Resources are :
I) Forest resources.
II) Water resources.
III) Mineral resources.
IV) Food resources.
V) Energy resources.
VI) Land resources.
Forest Resources
Forests are of immense value to us from point of
i) Commercial Uses
ii) Ecological Services
Commercial Uses :
a) They provide us commercial goods such as timber,
firewood, pulpwood, food items, rubber etc.
b) They also provides Medicines, drugs, fibres,
bamboo canes etc.
c) They are also used for Mining, Agriculture, and
development of dams.
ECOLOGICAL SERVICES
I) Production of Oxygen : Oxygen produced by the trees
is vital for life on earth.
II) Reducing Global : Forests act as sink for CO2
Warming and reduces Global warming.
III) Wildlife habitat : They are homes for millions of
wildlife animals & plants
IV) Soil Conservation : They prevents soil erosion
V) Pollution moderators : They absorb many toxic gases
& keeps the air pure
DEFORESTATION
Major Causes :
i) Shifting Cultivation : Nearly 5 lac hectares of forest is cleared
for cultivation annualy.
ii) Fuel Requirements : Growing population creates increasing demand for
fuel wood. 65 million tonnes in 1950 has crossed
500 million tonnes in 2001.
iii) Development Projects : Development projects like big dams, road
construction, hydroelectric projects causes
massive destruction.
Major Causes :
iii) Growing food needs : It is the main reason for deforestation.
Agricultural lands are created by clearing the
forests to meet increasing food demands .
iv) Overgrazing : Overgrazing by the cattles causes further
degradation of forest lands
v) Forest Fires : These may be natural or man made & causes
huge forest loss
Consequences of Deforestation
•Threatens the existence of wildlife species.
• Biodiversity is lost.
• Genetic diversity is eroded.
• Natural cycles get affected.
• Rainfall is badly influenced.
• Soil erosion takes place.
• Global warming is enhanced..
