One Year part time Diploma in Kuchipudi at Adikavi Nannaya University

Objectives:
To conserve our culture and tradition through the Kuchipudi dance form, the heritage
to be continued for posterity under the changing global scenario
Be one among the few leading Universities to provide One Year part time Diploma
Course in Kuchipudi dance form in Andhra Pradesh
To encourage and motivate the students in East and West Godavari Districts interested
to experiment in this art; and to draw out their skills, creativity, innovations and
improvisations in performing this art.
Create a platform to learn dance skills as a hobby or to establish professional startups
To provide a valid certificate to the students and public in Kuchipudi, who hitherto had
no option but to learn from a private teacher.
Regulations:
The candidates for One Year part time Diploma in Kuchipudi shall require:
1. Only Women Candidates with Intermediate/Diploma are eligible
2. Basic knowledge of Classical Dance is a prerequisite.
3. Priority will be given to those candidates having certificates in any dance course.
4. Selection will be based on an aptitude Test, conducted by the Committee.
Dress:
The students shall be required to wear a practice saree which will permit them to practice
Kuchipudi movements comfortably during Practical sessions.
Reservations:
All extant government reservations norms are applicable for admissions.
Course of study:
One Year part time Diploma in Kuchipudi shall include Two theory papers and Two
Practicals. The details of these papers are provided in the syllabus.
Kuchipudi Practice:
The students shall practice Adugulu, Teermanams, jathis, Gestures of limbs including
Asamyuta - Samyuta - Nrutta Hastas, Pada bedhas, Siro Bedhas, Drushti bedhas, Greeva
bedhas, Charis and Abhinaya (Facial expressions) during the course on a regular basis. They
shall maintain a record consisting of the details of the sequential gestures involved in
Kuchipudi Practices. Such a record shall be submitted at the time of the practical examination
for evaluation.
Attendance:
A student shall be permitted to appear for the University examination at the end of the academic
year only if she puts in attendance as per the University rules and regulations. However, in
view of the special nature of this course is desirable that the student shall put in at least 80
percent attendance to achieve the benefits of the course. In addition, the Principal / Course
coordinator shall certify that the student has learned the prescribed Dance items and techniques
so that she will be able to teach them to others.
Examinations:
The examination pattern for the One-year part time Diploma in Kuchipudi include three
internal examinations and year-end examinations.
**Average of the best two internal examination marks will be considered**

Mode of examination and evaluation for Kuchipudi Practice:
In view of the unique nature of Kuchipudi Practice, the following mode of evaluation is
recommended for Kuchipudi Practice.
The total marks of 50 for the internal - examination in Kuchipudi practice shall be distributed
as follows:
Performance-20 marks
Expressions-10 marks
Viva-voce-10 marks
Records-10 marks
The total marks of 150 for the Year-end examination in Kuchipudi practice shall be
distributed as follows:
Performance-70 marks
Expressions-40 marks
Viva-voce-20 marks
Records-20 marks
The year-end examination in Kuchipudi Practice will be conducted jointly by an internal and
external examiner.
A candidate shall be declared to have passing in a paper, if she obtains not less than 40% of
marks in that paper and 50% in practical examination. However, the aggregate passing
minimum may be 50%. In addition, the principal / course coordinator has to certify on the
recommendation of the concerned instructor that the candidate has learnt all the prescribed
Kuchipudi techniques and items and that she competent to teach others. A candidate failing to
secure the minimum marks prescribed as above shall have to reappear for the examination.
Successful candidates passing the examination in all papers including Kuchipudi practice shall
be classified as below according to the aggregate percentage obtained.
50% and above but below 60% - Second class
60% and above but below 70% - First class
70% and above - First class with Distinction
Candidates who successfully complete the entire course in one year only shall be eligible to
be considered for the award of rank of first class with distinction or first class.
Course Outcomes:
Dance is a holistic exercise that builds one’s mind and body. Adding dance to academics is not
a diversion or disturbance but can actually make students perform better in life i.e., Dancing is
a mix of art and exercise which connects the mind and body, and makes one sharper and
stronger.
The main objective of the Program to initiate students to the sublime art form, the
Indian classical dance Kuchipudi is learnt.
The fundamentals of dance, both in theoretical and practical ways, that create and
develop awareness and appreciation for the Kuchipudi dance form will be achieved
Students will learn complex movement phrases in different rhythmic measures, to
gain expertise and proficiency to perform challenging aspects in Kuchipudi dance.
Total Number of Seats: 20 (10 seats will be reserved for students and 10 seats are for public,
left-over seats will allocated to candidates in waiting list either from students or public)
Faculty Requirement: 1. One full time dance teacher and one paper wise dance teacher with
MA in Kuchipudi Dance.
Proposed Fee: For Students: Rs 2000 /-, For public: Rs 5000/-
