INTRODUCTION
1. ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY

Manonmaniam Sundaranar University (MSU) is a dynamic Institution of higher learning, in


Tirunelveli, the educational hub of Southern Tamil Nadu, with a campus area of 550 acres. The
University was established in 1990, by the Government of Tamil Nadu, as a teaching - cum-
affiliating University. The University is named after the Tamil poet litterateur Prof. P. Manonmaniam
Sundaram Pillai (1855-1897), the author of the famous verse drama, Manonmaniam. The University
caters to the needs of the four southern districts of Tamil Nadu, viz., Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi,
Kanyakumari and Tenkasi. This University is reaccredited with ‘A’ Grade by NAAC (3rd cycle).
University has achieved the 93rd position in the All India University Ranking by NIRF, New Delhi for
the year 2024. This University has been ranked 5th by MHRD, GOI in Swachh Campus ranking 2019
of Higher Education Institutions.

Manonmaniam Sundaranar University affiliates hundred and four Colleges, Six Manonmaniam
Sundaranar University Colleges and has 29 teaching departments. 1,33,719 students are studying in
the University Departments / Centres and Colleges. Many of these colleges have contributed
significantly to the cause of higher education, of which six colleges including the oldest women’s
college in the State, are over 100 years old. The University is one of the pioneer institutions which
offers Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) and Online Courses through NPTEL and SWAYAM. The
Courses and Research Programmes offered by the University have been carefully chosen to cater to
the contemporary needs of the region.

The University Departments offer Ph.D., Integrated P.G. Programmes, P.G. Diploma, Diploma and
Certificate Programmes in addition to regular P.G. Programmes with exemplary library services.
Also the University offers Bharat Ratna Dr. M. G. Ramachandran Centenary Fellowship to the
Research Scholars.

There are Directorate of Distance and Continuing Education and Directorate of Vocational
Education. Through Community Colleges and Vocational Skill Development Centres (VSD),
Directorate of Vocational Education is offering skill based Advanced Diploma, Diploma and
Certificate courses in various skill sectors. Manonmaniam Sundaranar University P.G. Extension
Centre, Nagercoil, Sri Paramakalyani Centre of Excellence in Environmental Sciences, Alwarkurichi,
the Centre for Marine Science and Technology, Rajakkamangalam and UG Programmes at Shanthi
Nagar, Tirunelveli are the off-campus Departments of the University.

Excellent opportunities in extracurricular activities are extended by the National Service Scheme and
Youth Welfare Department and Physical Education Department, The University has sophisticated
auditorium to accommodate around thousand students.

The University has a multipurpose indoor sports Stadium and a Fitness Centre (Gymnasium).
Gnanavani Educational FM & Mano Vani online radio station and Centre for Women Empowerment
and Studies are functioning in the University. The University has Health Centre, Guest House, Post
Office, Bank, ATM, Students’ Amenities Centre, 24 x 7 Ambulance Service, Day Care Service and 1
MW Solar Power Plant within the Campus. The University has established Sir C.V. Raman Centre
for Central Instrumentation with highly sophisticated Scientific equipments to improve the research.
Outdoor games, Sports, Yoga and meditation classes are conducted regularly for the welfare of the
students. Annual sports and cultural day competition are conducted for the staff and students
through Mano day and Women’s Day celebrations. Departments have Internet connectivity with
WIFI. The University provides affordable quality education to the underprivileged and unreached
sections of the society in this region.

2. LOCATION

The University is located at Abishekapatti (on Tirunelveli- Tenkasi Road) at a distance of 8


kilometers from Tirunelveli Junction. A judicious blend of functional and aesthetic features
distinguishes the campus buildings. The serene landscape and a vast campus of over 550 acres
form an ideal setting for the academic community. The University, sensitive to the complex and
diverse needs of the times, has evolved many innovative programmes. Research and extension
activities are not pursued for its own sake, but are directed towards enriching the social matrix to
help build better human beings and better tomorrow.
Adequate infrastructure facilities and the peaceful campus atmosphere are conducive to the
students to pursue their academic endeavours in an excellent manner.

Note: The University has the right to suspend any Programme, if the
circumstances so warrant.

Many of the Departments have linkages with premier National & International Institutions.
Research programmes are being carried out in all the Departments. Campus Interview is
conducted periodically to cater to the needs of the aspiring students through Placement
Cell.

5. COLLABORATIVE VENTURES

The University is actively engaged in collaborative ventures with individuals and institutions.
The Centre for Environmental Sciences at Alwarkurichi, functioning in collaboration with the
Amalgamations Group, bears testimony to this. Eco-friendly ventures in aquaculture, fishing and
agro-inputs are the thrust areas of Centre for Marine Science and Technology at Rajakkamangalam.
Further, Departments of Mathematics, Communication and Mass Media, Management Studies and
Geotechnology have made their mark in the respective field of study.

Centre of Excellence has been awarded by Government of TamilNadu to Sri Paramakalyani Centre
of Excellence in Environmental Sciences of this University functioning at Alwarkurichi.

6. LIBRARY

The University Library is well equipped and has a good collection of reference sources, books and
journals in printed as well as in electronic forms. Internet facility is available to browse any
information in a moment and also efficient Online Public Access Cataloguing Service is provided to
the users. The Library is fully automated with the help of INFLIBNET Centre, Ahmedabad. The
University Library provides research-oriented information to its users getting information from
American Information Resource Centre. It has its membership with DELNET and also provides e-
journals service through INFONET.

7. UNIVERSITY HOSTEL

Hostel facility is available for Women and Men students at the University Campus. Hostel facilities
are available for the girl students in Centre for Marine Science and Technology, Rajakkamangalam
and Sri Paramakalyani Centre of Excellence in Environmental Sciences, Alwarkurichi.

8. HEALTH CENTRE

Well-equipped Health Centre with Medical Lab and 24 x 7 Ambulance facilities is available in the
University Campus.

9. INTERNET CENTRE:

An Internet Centre is available for the exclusive utility of the University Students throughout the
day at free of cost. Wi-Fi facility is available in the University Campus.

10. EQUAL OPPORTUNITY CELL

The Equal Opportunity Cell (SC/ST/OBC (Non-Creamy Layer / Minorities Cell) functions for the
welfare of the SC/ST/OBC/Minority students of the University. The Cell takes the responsibility for
the improvement of overall performance of the SC/ST/OBC/ Minority students in the competitive
examinations so as to bring them up to the expected competitive level as compared to other
communities.

11. ELIGIBILITY FOR LIBRARY PROGRAMMES

12. MODE OF APPLICATION

a) The application cost for SC/SCA/ST/PwD and Transgender is Rs.250/-


The application cost for other candidates is Rs.750/-

b) Candidates can apply through Online in the University website: www.msuniv.ac.in.

c) SC/SCA/ST/PwD and Transgender candidates upload the photocopy of the Community


and relevant certificate along with the application.

d) Entrance Examination will be conducted through Offline.

e) The attested copies of the following certificates should be uploaded in the online
application.
i. H.Sc. Mark sheet.
ii. Degree Mark statements (up to V Semester, if the candidate is awaiting final
Semester result and for others final consolidated mark statement)

iii. Degree Provisional Certificate / Diploma (for those who are awaiting results, a
Programme certificate from the Principal is needed).
iv. Transfer Certificate
v. Community Certificate (for SC/SCA/ST/BC/BCM / MBC/DNC candidates only)
vi. Sports Certificates (if the candidate is an outstanding sports person)
vii. Differently abled Certificate (if the candidate is Differently abled)

f) Any change in the address of the applicant should be intimated immediately to the Registrar
and to the Head of the Department concerned.

13. ADMISSION PROCEDURE

a) Ranking for admission will be based on the marks secured in qualifying Examination and
Entrance Examination. 50:50

b) The number of questions for the entrance examination is 50. Total marks are 50. Questions
will be of multiple choice types and with no negative marks.

c) The rules of reservation of seats prescribed by the Government of Tamil Nadu, 15% for
SC and 3% for SCA, 1% for ST, 20% for MBC and DNC, 26.5% for BC other than BC
Muslims and 3.5% for BC Muslims and 31% for Open Competition will be followed in
admission to each Programme. Among the total number of seats in the University
Departments, 2% will be reserved for outstanding sports persons, three seats for children
of Ex-servicemen of Tamil Nadu origin(G.O.Ms. No.230, Higher Education (G1)
Department, dated 23-7-2001), 5% for Differently Abled and one seat for NCC cadet of
outstanding merit with ‘A’ certificate for +2 students and ‘C’ Certificate for degree students.

d) Candidates selected for admission will be intimated individually through a memo/mail.

e) The selected candidate should submit the following certificates in original at the time of
admission.
i. S.S.L.C Mark Sheet
ii. H. Sc. Mark Sheet
iii. Degree Mark Statement
iv. Degree Provisional Certificate / Original Degree or Diploma.
v. The candidates awaiting the results need to submit mark statements up to V Semester
for M.Lib.I.Sc (Integrated) and Ist semester for M.Lib.I.Sc Lateral Entry and the
Programme Certificate from the Principal.
vi. Transfer Certificate and Conduct Certificate
vii. Community Certificate
viii. Stamp size photo for ID card

14. CONCESSION TO SPASTIC STUDENTS


Dyslexic, Spastic students are permitted to use an amanuensis and additional one hour (60
minutes) time for each paper will be given in all the University Examinations.

15. RAGGING IN EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS


If any incident of ragging comes to the notice of the University, the student concerned will be
given an opportunity to explain his or her conduct and if his or her explanation is not found
satisfactory, the University will expel him or her from the Institution.

Students should submit an undertaking from parents for not indulging in ragging.

16. DETAILS ABOUT FEE
INDIAN STUDENTS
a) The candidates admitted shall pay the tuition and other fees as specified in the admission
letter.
b) In accordance with G.O.Ms.No.722 Social Welfare Department dated 13th October 1977,
SC/ST and SC / ST converted Christians are exempted from the payment of tuition fee
and exemption will be granted only upon the production of Community Certificate (in
original). The exemption does not cover other fees, namely, special fee, laboratory fee,
guidance & counselling fee and contingency fee.

c) Tuition Fee and Special Fee in the University Departments are exempted for the
students belonging to the category of Differently Abled Persons and in addition
exemption of Examination fee and extra time while writing the examinations for blind
students.

d) Tuition fee, Examination fee and other fees in the University Departments are exempted
for the students belonging to the category of Transgender.

e) Tuition fee, Examination fee and other fees in the University Departments are exempted
for the children who are belonging to the category of folk artist.

FOREIGN STUDENTS
a. All PG/PG Diploma in Language and Social Science Programmes (Departments
of Tamil, English, History, Sociology, Communication, Management Studies,
Commerce, Physical Education, Education, Economics) - 1000 US Dollars per year.
(All academic fees; other charges extra)

b. All PG/PG Diploma in Science and Engineering Programmes (Departments of


Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Criminology, CITE, CMST, SPKCES, Statistics, Computer
Science, Geo Technology, Biotechnology, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Plant Science,
Animal Science, Renewable Energy Science, Library Science) – 2000 US Dollars per
year. (All academic fees; other charges extra)

17. STUDENT EVALUATION


a. Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) is followed for all the Programmes.

b. Evaluation is based on continuous internal assessment (25%) and end-semester


examination (75%). The candidate has to score minimum of 50% in the end semester
examinations and 50% total in each Theory Paper. For Practicals the internal external
marks are as per SCAA resolution.

c. University Examinations will be held in each semester.

d. A student can be admitted to an examination only upon the submission of the prescribed
application form on or before the prescribed date through Online.

e. A minimum of 75% attendance is required to appear for the University Examinations.

f. Students should register for all papers in the first appearance in each semester. Students
may apply for paper-wise appearance for arrears papers also.

g. When a student completes the required 90 credits prescribed for the Programme, CGPA
will be calculated as follows. The marks obtained by the candidate (sum of external and
internal marks) in a paper is multiplied by the credits assigned to that paper. Such
weighted marks for all the courses are added and divided by the total credits (minimum
90).
