The problem of COVID plastic waste is generating some clever solutions around the world.
One enterprising group of teachers and students at IOWA State University challenged
themselves to re-purpose plexiglass barriers. They found the acrylic is cuttable and pliable under
heat, making it ideal for designing educational equipment like brochure holders, desktop
organisers and adjustable desks.
Dismantling ‘hygiene theatre’ is one thing, but it’s clear that most PPE is here to stay until a
better solution comes along. Rather than despair at this mounting waste, we could use it as a spur
to refocus our efforts on eliminating other single-use plastics - ones that aren’t so vital.
Did you know, for example, that the UK uses 11 billion wet wipes a year, with 90 per cent
of those containing plastic? MP Fleur Anderson is proposing a new law to ban this variety,
scheduled for a second reading in the House of Commons on 4 February 2022.
Yorkshire Water is backing the ban, and with good reason: 45 per cent of the blockages it
removed from the sewer network last year were down to wet wipes being incorrectly flushed
down toilets. If cutting down on the mammoth amount of single-use plastics we use is a cause
you want to get behind, there’s plenty of places to start.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate
the correct answer to each of the questions from 44 to 50.
For gaslighters like Dan, the technique is a way to control the moment in the relationship, to
stop the conflict, to ease some anxiety and feel “in charge” again. It’s a way for someone to
deflect responsibility and to tear down someone else, all the while keeping the other person
hooked, especially if what they are hooked on is the desperate need to please another person —
or prove that person wrong.
People aren’t born gaslighters like they are born introverts or extroverts. A gaslighter is a
student of social learning. They witness it, feel the effects of it, or stumble upon it and see that it
is a potent tool. It’s a cognitive strategy for self-regulation and co-regulation. To be frank, it
works.
The gaslighter may not even know he is doing anything strategic or manipulative. He lacks
self-awareness and may just think he is expressing himself directly, or is prone to unflinching
honesty, saying it “like it is.”
For example, if a gaslighter’s partner asks where he’s been when he comes home at
midnight, a gaslighter might accuse their partner of caring too much about punctuality, then
justify it to themselves by asking, “What’s wrong with telling someone there’s something wrong
with them?” It’s his way of making sense of why his partner is upset with his lateness and to put
the conversation, and himself, to bed.
Gaslighters are people, too. For many, gaslighting could be a bad habit picked up from the
relationships they grew up around. If a gaslighters’ partner, friend, or parents is willing to do the
hard work of changing the way they argue or interact with them, change is possible. But it can
be difficult to achieve this if they continue to buffer you from your own reality.
Question 44: Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A. The Desperate Need to Please Another Person
B. A Cognitive Strategy for Self-regulation

D. For many, gaslighting could be a bad habit.
Question 50: Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?
A. Gaslighting can control the moment in the relationship, but can't stop the conflict.
B. It’s unwise to use gaslighting for self-regulation and co-regulation.
C. Gaslighting, which is sometimes bad and changeable, forms in everyday life.
D. Gaslighters are too bad to be a friend, and should be avoided.
