Rob Ford in the Canadian Media Essay
Rob Ford in the media
Rob Ford has been in the spotlight of Canadian media ever since the allegations have surfaced about
a video of the Toronto Mayor smoking crack cocaine. This story gained international attention while
even drawing on the Mayor for comic relief. American newspaper, The Wall Street Journal, along
with Canadian newspapers, The Globe and Mail and Toronto Sun each have a unique target audience
whom they are writing for. As a result of the intended audience each newspaper includes diction and
style relevant for the target audience.
The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) article, Ford Nation Sticks by Toronto Mayor, So Far , written by Ben
Dummett, summarizes the current Rob Ford situation starting from when he admitted to ... Show

For example, Dummett discusses why the wealthy downtown core of Trinity Spadina is more
likely to be opposed to Fords political views while suburban individuals in Etobicoke North are
more inclined to be in favour of Ford and his proclivity to save Toronto money. This argument is
backed up with facts showing how income correlates to political decline or continued support of
Ford in the city of Toronto. The income and population data came from Statistics Canada 2011
Census, a trustworthy source. Secondly, the political support data came from Ipsos, a recognizable
Canadian Market Research Company which business professional in the US have most likely heard
of being in the business environment. Lastly, the article gives credibility by using a local professor,
Richard Florida, an urban studies expert and director of the Martin Prosperity Institute at the
University of Toronto s Rotman School of Managment, an internationally acknowledged university
to support views of Ford here in Toronto.
The article in the Globe and Mail, New video of extremely inebriated Toronto Mayor Rob Ford
surfaces written by Jill Mahooney and Kaleigh Rogers, discusses a new video of Ford, which
shows the Mayor ranting, yelling and displaying angry threatening remarks. The article goes on to
discuses the origins of the video, and the Mayor s response to the public
Aortic Aneurysm Essay
An aneurysm is a life threatening arterial disease in which the wall of arteries dilates permanently.
The aortic aneurysm mainly occurs in the thoracic and abdominal regions of the aorta and can lead
to the aortic dissection or rupture resulting in mortality and morbidity of patients. It is believed that
multiple factors play roles in the initiation and progression of this disease. However, the underlying
causes of the aortic aneurysm and its failure have not been fully understood yet. The current work
aims to investigate the failure mechanisms of Ascending Thoracic Aortic Aneurysms (ATAAs) from
a biomechanical perspective by considering the histological and morphological changes of the
ATAAs.\\ The regional mechanical, histological, and physiological properties of aneurysmal and
control human ascending aortas were examined to characterize the behavior of the aortic materials
and to explore the inter correlations of these properties. Mechanical and histological experiments
were performed on the samples excised from four different quadrants of the aortic rings and the
results were analyzed using numerical and statistical methods. To study the effects of genetics, the
aneurysmal samples were categorized based on their valve types into two tissue groups: those with
Bicuspid Aortic Valves (BAV) and those with Tricuspid Aortic Valves (TAV). ... Show more content

The Breadwinner Reading Log Essay
Response 1
The Breadwinner by Deborah Ellis is set in war ravaged Kabul, Afghanistan during the Taliban s
rule of the country. The quote, There had been a war going on in Afghanistan for more than twenty
years (13) indicates that it probably took place in the Taliban s early rule between 1996 and 1998.
The protagonist is a young eleven year girl named Parvana who has spent most of her life witnessing
and suffering from the turmoil in her country. At the beginning of the story, she appears to be a naive
and ordinary girl in the sixth grade who innocently believes that, when the Taliban close down the
girls schools, she is getting a short holiday from school.
Throughout the novel Ellis attempts to concentrate on Parvana s personality ... Show more content on

The incident in the stadium also reveals to Parvana and Shauzia the complete horror of living under
such a regime and haunts Parvana for the next few days. As a Muslim, the writer believes that the
actions of the Taliban like the one s depicted in this novel disgrace Muslims in the present times.
Islam is a peaceful religion that promotes morality and generosity among all people, not the twisted
version portrayed by the Taliban.
This book brings to my mind quite a few questions. One of the more obvious ones is: why have so
many powerful nations and empires attempted to conquer Afghanistan? In ancient and medieval
times it was a gateway to East Asia, but why in this age too? Why are countries where great and
technologically advanced ancient and medieval civilizations once flourished lagging behind in the
modern world? Why has the world let two military powers fight each other all over the globe and
in territories of other nations? Why are economic and military superpowers selling arms to groups
in unstable regions of the world for paltry profits? Above all, why is there such a difference in
quality of life in different parts of the world?

Response 2
The Breadwinner plot is set over a period of a few months. Though the reader is introduced to new
locations such as the prison and the graveyard there is no overall change of setting in the story.
Most of the story is played out at Parvana s home and in the marketplace.
The novel has a general air
Divergent Archetypes
Two literary works that have similar archetypal meanings are Veronica Roth s fictional story
Divergent and George Lucas s written film Star Wars. The plot of Divergent is based on a post

Essay on Cause and Effect of Kristallnacht
Cause and Effect of Kristallnacht

The Holocaust was a great tragedy, but it didn t happen overnight. It was a long process of
demeaning Jews as subhuman. This started as early as 1933 when Hitler first came to power.
However, Kristallnacht, or The Night of the Broken Glass, was like the dam bursting. It was when
the government of Germany encouraged its people to loot and burn Jewish shops, synagogues, and
schools. In addition, many Jews were pulled out of their houses in the middle of the night and sent to
concentration camps. In some towns so many of the men were sent to the camps that the women and
children were forced to clean up the broken glass that littered the streets. Kristallnacht was a very
significant point in the Holocaust, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Aryan were told not to shop in Jewish shops and Jews could not shop in Aryan owned shops. In
1935 The Nuremberg Race Laws were passed. These stated that Jews could not go to public
swimming pools, theaters, schools, etc. In addition Jews were forced to sew a Star Of David on
their clothes to identify them as Jews. At this point in time, Jews could do very little. Some were
arrested just for taking a walk outside. So at this point in time Jews were very restricted. One
Jewish teenager, Herschel Grinszpan, was living in Paris. His father was relocated by the Nazis
to Poland. He decided that he was going to assassinate the German ambassador. He went to the
embassy, but he was not able to locate his target. So he tried to assassinate Third Secretary Ernst
vom Rath instead. Ironically, Rath was an anti Nazi. Even though Rath was only a minor official,
Hitler used propaganda to convince people that the act was an international conspiracy by Jews
everywhere. Hitler made it seem as though Jews were attacking Germany itself. This is what led to
Kristallnacht. The act of one Jew gave Hitler exactly the excuse he needed to hurt the Jews en masse
and in public. It gave him the excuse for the government to condone mass destruction of Jewish
property and businesses. Even though Jews were losing their liberty they still endured it as best they
could. However Kristallnacht convinced them once and for all that they were in serious trouble.

Development Of The Residential School System
I just don t like to talk about it or even think about it. Sometimes when I am by myself, doing
beadwork or something. I stop all the sudden and tears just start coming down
: A quote from Aggie George recalling of her experience in the Lejac Indian Residential School
(Legacy of Hope Foundation, 2001). In the 1880s all the way to the 1990 s roughly 150,000
aboriginal children where removed from their communities and homes to attend the residential
school system set up by the government and operated by the Christian churches (Government of
Canada, 2015). The purpose of these residential schools was to isolate Aboriginal children from their
families and assimilate them into the dominant culture (First Nations Study Program, 2009). As the
history of the residential school system unfolds it becomes evident that the Canadian Government
attempted to eradicate the Aboriginals culture and lifestyle. The residential school system was a
devastating crime against Aboriginal cultures and has had lasting and debilitating effects on their
populations.
The residential schools were a wide spread school system that was established by the Canadian
government and organized by the Christian churches (Government of Canada, 2015). The goal of
these schools was to educate Aboriginal children in Christianity and to adapt them into mainstream
society. The children in these schools were forced to abandon their heritage, and were separated
from their families. The aboriginal school is system was

For Colored Girls Essay
For colored girls (FCG) is Tyler Perry s adaption to Shange s first and most acclaimed, theater
piece. Shange s original work was not so much of a play with an ongoing plot; rather, it consist of
a series of emotional poetic monologues accompanied with dance movements and music. Shange
called her work a choreopoem. The original work by Shange and Perry s adaption deal with black
feminism and what it means to be a black women living in America. The poems deal with love,
abandonment, domestic violence, rape, and abortion, embodied by each woman s story. The end of
the play brings together all of the women for a laying on of hands, in which Shange evokes the
power of womanhood.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many black feminist felt that Perry would goof it up and turn it into another Madea movie cash
cow. One article even stated that Oprah Winfrey, didn t even want him to make the film. Now I
ve learned that even Tyler s close pal Oprah Winfrey did not want him to make the film version of
the iconic 1975 play by Ntozake Shange. And that her reaction echoed the outrage of many black
females along the lines of, How dare you! because the storyline is profoundly their story, not any
man s, and especially not his. (Nikki Finke, 2010).
Many black feminist were outrage because Shange s work is a landmark to black feminism and
African American Literature. People were also skeptical because prior to the release of the film,
Tyler Perry, had only done African American romantic comedies. Essentially, nobody thought he
would be able to stick to the script and produce a film with such a strong relatable message.
Real recognizing real. FCG is relatable to women of color because their stories are universal to black
women. Their stories are my stories. FCG gives a small voice to women who struggle with the color
of their skin.

Don Quixote
What giants? [says] Sancho, amazed, (Cervantes 36). Those giants you see over there with long
arms: some of them have them well nigh two leagues in length, [replies] his master, (Cervantes 36).
In Chapter 7 of Don Quixote, Miguel de Cervantes portrays Don Quixote as an idealistic character
who believes that the windmills are giants, and because of this, it can be said that Don Quixote has a
crazy mind that creates objects to be something they are not. Don Quixote is a chivalric romance and
takes place at the period of the Spanish Inquisition; however, Cervantes Xportrays a lunatic man who
goes on adventures throughout La Mancha, Spain as a knight errant. Throughout this novel shows
Quixote being quixotic. Quixotic deals with extravagant chivalry or romance, followed by seeing
objects impractically. In the story, there are characters who see and think in a ... Show more content

In reality, however, they are just windmills. In this scene, Quixote and Panza are seeing thirty or
forty windmills as they are standing on a hill. Quixote says to Panza, Do you see over yonder, my
friend Sancho Panza, thirty or more huge giants? (Cervantes 36). Quixote tells this to Panza
because Quixote s reaction towards these windmills are caused by his thinking that he is a real
knight errant, and his duty of a knight errant is to fight in battles and conquer the giants. Another

Nuclear Power And Its Effects On The World
On October 24th, Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders said, Climate Change is real!
Climate Change is caused by human activity! Climate Change is affecting all parts of the world.
Sanders speaks about the disruption of ecosystems, the dying of species, and the destruction of earth
s atmosphere. The creation of increased greenhouse gases caused by heavy reliance on fossil fuel
energy has disrupted Earth s equilibrium. Sanders calls for alternative energy in America; hailing
countries that have transformed their fossil fuel dependency. Nuclear poweris a relevant factor in
alternative energy for policy makers. In the 1950 s, anticipation for nuclear energy was very high,
people thought that new advancements in nuclear energy would make electricity free. Nuclear
power was successfully implemented for commercial use in 1954 Russia. Since then a total of 438
nuclear reactors were created around the world, including the United States, with 67 still under
construction. Nuclear power support has always waned throughout the years, reaching high points of
investment when oil prices skyrocketed in the 1970 s. Nuclear power is praised for its efficiency
and minimal environmental impacts, however common misconceptions about the danger of nuclear
power/power plants, discredit nuclear energy as a better alternative to fossil fuels.
The Soviet Union spent large sums of money constructing a successful nuclear power plant. The first

Analysis Of The Secretary Of Labor V Performance...
It is alarming to know that each year there are over 4,500 scaffold injuries and 65 deaths
(Occupational Safety and Health Administration [OSHA], 2016). In addition, there is a high risk
for construction workers to be struck from objects falling off scaffolds. With these facts in mind,
the Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission s (OSHRC) 2013 case of the Secretary
of Labor v Performance Contracting, Inc. (PCI) raises questions as to why violations of OSHA s
scaffold standards are sometimes considered other than serious. Understanding that OSHA gives
the Secretary of Labor the tasks of rulemaking and enforcement of its rules, it also gives the task
of carrying out the legal process to the commission which both parties accepted, as well as PCI
engaging as a business affecting interstate commerce (Secretary of Labor v. PCI, 2013, pp. 2 3).
Knowledge of the case s background, parties involved, arguments presented, cases used to reach a
verdict, and final ruling provide insight to the penalties assessed, significance, and personal
opinion. As detailed in OSHRC s Docket No. 11 3095, a trial was held in the case of the Secretary
of Labor, the plaintiff, v PCI, the defendant, on February 28, 2013 in Portland, Oregon before the
Administrative Law Judge Patrick B. Augustine. According to court documents, PCI was hired by
general contractor, Penta, to do installation work at the Indian Head casino. Since PCI needed

Family Guy Influence
There are many cartoons and sitcoms on television for both adults and children. They range from
Disney Channel to Fox, but most have one thing in common: the father figure is a bumbling fool.
While enjoyable, many of these shows are damaging to our society and it makes one wonder if there
is a connection between kids and teenagers who watch these shows and not respecting men or the
father figures in their life.
In Family Guy, the idiot is Peter Griffin, in The Simpsons it is Homer Simpson, and in American
Dad it is Stan Smith. Even children s shows such as Good Luck Charlie participate in the new
standard. It is a sad reality but one that most Americans face whether they realize it or not. Whether

Rather than admitting to the accident and trying to fix it, Peter bribes his daughter Megan into
taking the blame in exchange for buying her a new car. What kind of message does this send to
teens and young adults?
These shows make life seem easy and unimportant. The father figures earn no respect and create
multiple problems for themselves and for their families on a daily basis. The message it sends is
that it is ok to be lazy. It is fine to lie and cheat. There is no problem with not having a respectable
reputation. Adultery, stealing, and violent assault is acceptable. The list goes on and on.
What if there were a show created in which the father has a respectable career, he takes care of his
family, respects his wife, and helps his children with any problem that may arise? What if the lead
character is smart and honest, kind and level headed? Would that have an impact on teens and how
they view their fathers? To take it even further, perhaps it would have an impact on dads and their
self image. Perhaps it would help them to strive to be better and to set a good example for those

Analysis Of Naomi Shihab Nye
Poetry is the creative means in which emotion is expressed through the literary art of rhythm,
rhyme and repetition. Over time, the distinctive style of poetry has been altered to create great
diversity branching from the traditional poetic style of writing. Missouri born author, Naomi Shihab
Nye, provides a great example of a unique style of writing. Nye is a poet, songwriter and novelist
whose style incorporates everyday objects in her writing to create a spontaneous, yet thoughtful
connection between these everyday items and the reader. In the most basic form, Nyes poem is
about fame. She implies that it is essentially these little things that we overlook all these everyday,
seemingly unimportant things are really what deserve... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This stanza captures the moments in which people are insignificant, or momentarily overlooked
alongside the remainder of the everyday objects in the poem. Nye expresses how paying attention to
these people, even by the simple act of smiling, will make her famous not to everyone but to them.
Similar to a buttonhole or pulley, we will never forget what we have the ability to do, and it is what
we can do that makes an impact on others rather than something extraordinary. Interest is further
maintained throughout the poem by the use of unique literary techniques. Unlike other poems,
Famous does not rhyme nor does it follow any specific structure. It does, however, correspond with
the spontaneity of incorporating everyday objects by not following a set structure. Throughout the
poem, sibilance, anaphora, parallelism and allusion have been incorporated to achieve a constant
face paced movement throughout the initial seven stanzas of the poem. These stanzas reflect a
constant change in setting, replicating the insightful thoughts of an everyday person throughout their
day, passing insignificant objects yet subconsciously identifying their importance. This fast paced
movement is maintained through the use of anaphora in lines one, two, five and seven. In
conjunction with anaphora, personification is used to enhance the already vivid image
Obscenity In The Workplace
Using an obscenity in any sense shows a lot about a person s character. I feel in any situation if a
person is deciding to let those words slip from their lips they lose their right to decide if anyone
knows about it. The three given examples involve three different types of people, two public and
one private. All muttered the word asshole. I feel no matter their title the word should stay in the
quote. It is ultimately up to the journalist s discretion if the quote is necessary to use, but if it is,
the obscenities should be left in. When the private figure, Deborah Woodell, used the word to
express how angry she was, a reader can feel the emotions in her tone. The same thing goes for both
George Bush and Larry Brown. Though Bush was unaware... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

If they felt it showed exactly how the person was feeling, it is okay to keep the obscenity in the
quote. However, if the word does nothing for the quote and story and the person just has a potty
mouth, it is unacceptable and needs to be removed. If the word shows emotion, it is okay to keep
in my book. If for some reason I were going to decide to make a list of rules when dealing with
situations like this I would decide that stronger curse words be covered up by number signs (#).
Words like asshole seem to be on the weaker end of the curse word spectrum so that word could
be spelled out. Other words would be dashed out such as the word bitch. Again, the word would
only appear in the quote if the journalist felt it added to the story. If it were to appear the word
would look like this, B##ch.You can still see what the word was supposed to be, but it doesn t
jump out of the page as much because it is spelled wrong. Overall, I think that curse words show
emotion. I don t think it is the right way to show how you feel, but when they are used in a
situation it shows the character of the person saying them. The public has the right to know the
true self of anyone being quoted in a news paper. Advice for people knowing they are in a public
place or being interviewed, just don t curse. If you are going to, do it in your home, in
