The Fallibility Of Assumptions In Atonement By Joe Wright
Assumptions are necessary for us to function as humans, if we did not make assumptions we
would have died out as a species long ago. In the film Atonement , author Joe Wright tells the story
of a young Briony, who has chosen to tell such a terrible lie that will forever disconnect her from
her sister, happiness, and herself. This text begs the question of assumptions; why we need to
understand the fallibility of them, why we need to be able to accept the consequences of them, and
why we should not treat them as fact. The topic and overall meaning that this idea holds conveys a
message that resonates with the idea that assumptions are sometimes a major factor in how
individuals go about taking responsibility for themselves. Until an individual... Show more content

Briony at age seventy seven has decided that the final book she will write would be about herself, the
mistakes she has made, the lives she has ruined, and her attempted reconciliation; which ultimately is
all a result of her own childish, forced, and bluntly wrong assumptions. Briony writes the book
atonement with the intent of it being her last novel, and ends up writing a false ending, which
portrays a better ending for Robbie and Cecilia. That addition that she replaces with reality,
indicating the life they could have had if Briony had done things differently; and it is that
replacement in her novel that shows how Briony has taken responsibility for the actions caused by
her assumptions. And by finally accepting responsibility for her actions, she is now enlightened, and
can see how and why the events unfolded the way they did. And therefore, this consequently leads to
the broadening of her fundamental understanding of nearly all perspectives of the events that took
place. Leading her to being aware of the fundamental truth behind the events that not only took place
in her story, but in reality as
The Iran Contra Affair
The Iran Contra affair is historically defined as the Reagan administration scandal that involved the
sale of arms to Iran in exchange for its efforts to secure the release of hostages in Lebanon and the
redirection of the proceeds of those sales to the Nicaraguan Contras. As the Nicaraguan
counterrevolutionaries, known as the Contras, began their efforts to retaliate against the Socialist
Sandinista Regime, American government forces stepped in to support the Contra cause in a hope to
support the world wide elimination of Communism. To understand the entire history of the scandal,
many individuals, groups, policies, and deals must be researched and put together to tell the
complete history of the Iran Contra affair.

Having previous experience dealing with aliens, Palmer took seriously to threats of communism
overthrowing the country and decided to act on this, thus leading to the Palmer Raids. In his 1920
forum, The Case against the Reds , Palmer defends America from the communists declaring that the
communists are ...preaching of anarchy and sedition...advising the defiance of law... and
encouraging the destruction of property. This primary document written by Palmer, set communists
up as criminals stating that robbery, not war, is the ideal of communism... and that it is ...the
American Government[s]... job to prevent this . By gaining support of fellow Americans, Palmer
helps further exploit the communist party and extract fear into the American minds. Because of this
red scare, Americans have historically grown to become weary of communism. Under the Truman
Doctrine in 1947, American forces were granted permission to intervene in any foreign relations so
long as they focused on the breakdown of communist forces. Americans have had a long history of
being involved with communist affairs around the world long before their support of the Nicaraguan
Contras existed. But because of this fascination and fear of communism, it pushed American officials
to become further emerged in the battle despite its lack of American interests. The Sandinista
Regime in Nicaragua was one of socialist influences. Because of this, the Reagan administration
Motivation Of Confidential Sources
Cultivating confidential sources is an integral part of police work and today, more than ever in
our history, prevents us from going dark despite encrypted technologies. In February 2009, I
successfully completed the Federal Bureau of Investigation s Undercover Certification Course. In
doing so, I became only the second New Jersey State Trooper to ever complete the course. I learned
a variety of lessons, but was especially intrigued to hear those about confidential sources. I learned
to treat sources with respect. I also learned that a source having a criminal record, does not stop them
from being human. Most importantly, I learned that while performing in an undercover capacity
with a source, that the confidential source is your life line.
Domestic Violence Meeting Reflection
I attended the Citizens Advisory Committee on Domestic Violence on March 17, at the Dutchess
County Office Building. While there, I learned that this committee (mostly of citizens) was
discussing the issues of their ideas and proposals being funded. They had recently lost grants and
were coming up with ideas to gain that money needed to fund their ideas. I found the title eye
catching. I m always interested in what there is to be done about domestic violence, so seeing this
meeting was a great way to see what is being done about this crime. Going to the event was not
what I expected. The room was even smaller than a classroom at Arlington. Unfortunately, only
half the committee was attending, but the ladies that were there were very nice. They were very
serious and considerate of what issues were on the table. They were well prepared to address ideas
that were from previous meeting and the diversity of the jobs the women worked in gave new
insights to the situation on hand. The women had a very clear understanding of the work that
needed to be done and were trying to come up with solutions to the problems. I appreciated the
consideration they took to answer any questions I had and explain a few things throughout the
meeting. They also had an agenda packet full of what... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Not on the committees end, but the publics participation. It was only my sister and I (I dragged
her out with me) as the viewing public. Considering the topic, I would have expected a bigger turn
out or even a larger voice on behalf of the committee. Another problem was how quickly they dove
into the topic at hand. This was definitely a good thing on their end, because they obviously had
done this before, but I was struggling to keep up with the acronyms and ideas that they were talking
about. Granted, at the end, I was able to ask several questions about what they did, but throughout
the meeting it was
Comparing Death in Do not go gentle into that good night...
Death in Do not go gentle into that good night and Death Be Not Proud
The poems Do not go gentle into that good night and Death Be Not Proud both deal with the subject
of death. These poems seem to have contradictory messages about death, yet at the same time have
similar attitudes toward it. Death Be Not Proud talks about how death really has no power over
people, while Do not go gentle into that good night says that it is part of human nature to fight
against death.
Both Do not go gentle into that good night and Death Be Not Proud see death as an opponent;
however, one sees it as an adversary that is already defeated while the other sees it as an enemy that
must be defeated. In Death Be Not Proud ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Even though they have different views of death they share the theme of defiance of death.
Both Death Be Not Proud and Do not go gentle into that good night do not necessarily see death as
a negative thing. In looking at the title Do not go gentle into that good night one notices that
Thomas calls the night, presumably a metaphor for death, good. He also says wise men at their
end know dark is right (4). This would suggest that he believes that death is a necessary
occurrence. If Thomas sees death as necessary, then why does he say Rage, rage against the dying
of the light (19)? The answer to this can be found in line 16 when he addresses his father.
Throughout the whole poem he names different types of men, then in the last stanza he specifically
names his father. I think that in this poem Thomas is trying to express that even though he knows
that death is natural he doesn t want his father to die. This creates a sort of conflict within the poem
where Thomas knows that eventually death will come for everyone, but he wants to put it off as
long as possible in the case of his father.
Donne s view of death is that it is an insignificant thing that has no power over people. By saying
One short sleep past, we wake eternally (13), he illustrates that he believes that there is some sort of
afterlife. In fact, he says that the time that death has power
Risk Of Coronary Heart Disease Essay
This condition is called atherosclerosis and the fatty material is called atheroma. In time, your
arteries may become so narrow that they cannot deliver enough oxygen rich blood to your heart.
The pain and discomfort you may feel as a result is called angina.
If a piece of atheroma breaks off it may cause a blood clot (blockage) to form. If it blocks your
coronary artery and cuts off the supply of oxygen rich blood to your heart muscle, your heart may
become permanently damaged. This is known as a heart attack. Find out more about how your

child prostitution are the three forms child trafficking typically exists as ( Riverkids Project 1).
There has been a rising number of Cambodian children being trafficked for sexual exploitation and

The small country of Cambodia has become a transit, source, and destination for child trafficking
victims. There are many children going through Cambodia from Vietnam and Thailand as a result of
child trafficking ( Human Trafficking 2). In 2006 Cambodia was one of the busiest spots in the
world for child trafficking, with many of those victims being delivered into the sex trade in
Thailand, Malaysia, Macao and Taiwan ( Global Crime Case: The Modern Slave Trade 1). Child

In this article, the author Devin Leonard discusses the success of South Park. South Park attracts
3.1 million viewers an episode which is Comedy Central s highest rated program; it is more than the
Daily Show with Jon Stewart. In 2006, South Park generated $34 million dollars in advertising
revenue. In 1999, when Paramount released South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut, a film by where
the main characters find their way into an R Rated film called Terrance and Phillip. The movie
was nominated for Academy award for best song Blame Canada and the film had a gross income
of $83 million dollars at the box office. After the South Park movie, viewers and critics were
looking forward to the satiric take through episodes based on current events such as 9/11 and the
release of the movie Passion of the Christ. Devin Leonard has a passive tone in the article, seems
Pro South Park and is an editor for Fortune Magazine. I will use this in my paper to show the
statistics of how popular South Park really is and to prove that viewers think the way the material or
crude language presented in South Park is relevant
Rock And Roll, Segregation, And The British Invasion Of 1964
I watched a video from the 50th anniversary presentations. The video I watched was about Rock
and Roll, Segregation, and The British Invasion of 1964. It was lectured by Dr. Christy Talbott,
and she first talked about the pre rock and roll period. The term Rock and Roll came from a song
from the year 1938, that stated My baby rock and rolls me all night. Rock and Rollor also known as
American Rock, was changed completely after the British Invasion came in 1964. The invasion
turned Rock and Roll into what is known today as Rock, it made a change for the good.
Musicians in the pre Rock and Roll era, sang about current events similar as we do today. The
events they sang about was Segregation, North Vs. South inferiority and the wars that were
happening at the time World War 2, Korean War and Vietnam War. THe artists of this time
consisted of The Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, Ritchie Valens and the most
famous of them all Elvis Presley. Elvis Presley s music was called White man with an African
American feel. In 1959 Motown records in Detroit, Michigan hired an all black group called The
Temptations. Their song My Girl hit number one on the billboards in 1964. The man that hired
them was Berry Gordy Jr. Berry Gordy Jr also hired all black women groups as well, but unlike the
all black male groups he dressed the women groups as white folk.
Epilepsy Brain Disorder
Introduction Epilepsy is a brain disorder classified as a neurological disorder that affects the brain
s electrical and immoderate activity which causes a person to have a seizure. This brain disorder
goes back thousands of years to Ancient Greece where these individuals believed that people had
seizures, they were being visited by an evil spirit or demon. The word Epilepsy also derives from
the ancient Greek word attack. Ancient Greeks also thought that this neurological disorder,
Epilepsy, was infectious and for this same matter most of the people that suffered from this
disorder lived alone. Now in present day, researchers and scientist know that this is not true and
they now know the real factors and things that cause these seizures to occur. Epilepsy is classified
into different types, each depending on what part of the brain is being affected and on the result
of the seizure; different parts of the brain that are being affected results to the type of Epilepsy
one has. However, all kinds of epilepsies have the same symptoms which are seizures. As of 2014,
Epilepsy was the fourth most common neurological disorder, until this year when a new study
was conducted. It was discovered that in only two years Epilepsy had become the most common
neurological disorder in the world. Epilepsy is drastically increasing over the years that more
than 200,000 cases of Epilepsy are being reported each year. According to the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention, about 2.3 million American adults and 467,000 children have Epilepsy.

Importance of After-School Programs Essay
Importance of After School Programs There are approximately forty nine million children and
youth, ages 6 17 living in the U.S. ( Making the Case 1). Children need care while they are in the
initial stages of growth and development. Whether this care is provided by a mother, father, sibling,
or other guardian, a child needs to be loved. When children turn a certain age, the care of the family
is added to by caregivers in another institution. While attending school, children are shown care for
the duration of the day by teachers, mentors, and other aids. This is a productive time for the
children s development because they are being nurtured in a well rounded, safe environment. This

There is a solution to assisting the needs of unsupervised children in the hours after school. With
effort, there is a place that can provide a fulfilling and nurturing environment for the children that
could otherwise be left in danger. After school programs are increasing in number, and are
catering to different children s interests and needs. After school programs, such as The Bridge
Project are important for children ages 6 17 because they are cost effective, reduce juvenile crime
rates, and raise academic success. These results are granted through attendance, providing enriching
experiences, and extending academics into the after school hours. After school programs have
been around for long time. However, their initial purpose was different than what is demanded in
today s society. The after school program was originally developed in urban communities in
response to the decline in child labor and the rise in mandatory schooling. This combination altered
the day of an urban child. The child would go to school, and come home with nothing to do. They
could not work anymore because of child labor laws. With this being a new law, parents did not
know what to do with their children because they had to work into the late hours of the evening.
Also, urban housing had unkempt, undesirable conditions for living. This caused many
