Chapters 1–4
Summary: Pip, a young orphan, lives with his harsh sister and kind brother-in-law, Joe. He
encounters an escaped convict in the marshes and brings him food. Later, he is invited to
the decaying mansion of the mysterious Miss Havisham and meets the beautiful but cold
Estella.

Chapters 5–8
Summary: Pip continues to visit Miss Havisham, developing feelings for Estella and shame
