Lily as the Goddess Diana in The House of Mirth Essay
Lily as the Goddess Diana in The House of Mirth

One of the tragedies in The House of Mirth by Edith Wharton is that Lily Bart is unable to marry
Laurence Selden and thereby secure a safe position in society. Their relationship fluctuates from
casual intimacy to outright love depending on how and where Selden perceives Lily. Selden sees a
beautious quality in Lily Bart that is not present in any of the other women in the novel. This
mysterious beauty that is so often alluded to, in addition to her attraction for the other men, is best
understood when Lily is conceived of as the goddess Diana. As Diana, Lily Bart hunts for the perfect
husband but cannot marry, remains separate from the dinginess of society, and finally is ... Show

Even at the very beginning of the novel, we notice that Lily chooses Selden s street because it is
the only street that has trees on it, some one has had the humanity to plant a few trees over there.
Let us go into the shade (8). The most intimate conversation between them will occur while sitting
in a beech grove after having walked through the woods. It is therefore safe to say that when Lily
is in the woods her true nature emerges, the nature that Selden considers to be real and that he
falls in love with. This explains why, during the theatrical presentation at the Wellington Brys
party, Selden is so deeply affected by the portrait of Lily. She emerges wearing a white dress as
part of a Reynold s painting, Mrs. Lloyd , but captivates the audience with her naturalness: Her
pale draperies and the background of foliage against which she stood served only to relieve the
long dryad like curves that swept upward from her poised foot to her lifted arm (142). Again we
see a direct comparison with Diana. Selden is so taken in by this scene that he completely agrees
with Gerty Farish when she says, It makes her look like the real Lily the Lily I know (142). His
love for Lily is strengthened by the fact that he and Gerty are the only two people who know what
Lily really is like. Selden watches the other men judging Lily, and shares a his thoughts with the
reader, making the beautiful
Stax Museum History
I don t know how the wonderful music history of Memphis pass me by but somehow It did! I
have always heard that Memphis is known for its musical history, especially the blues, but I never
investigated the theory for myself. The instructor at the college required me to write a paper about
the history of the Stax Museum in a reflection paper and I am glad she did. It influenced me to
finally take the time to view the history of Memphisfirsthand starting with the Stax Museum. While
I was there it came to my attention that the Stax Museum was a record company established by Jim
Stewart and Estelle Axton. The museum explained the original name for the company was satellite
records and it showed me the good and bad experiences within the company.... Show more content on

Skilled Workers During The Industrial Revolution
The industrial revolution was the introduction of new manufacturing processes between around
1760 to sometime between 1820 and 1840 as a specific end is still debated. Before the
introduction of new manufacturing processes the majority of manufacturing was done in people s
home by skilled workers such as weavers but with the advancement in heavy machinery and the
increasing use of steam power these skilled workers were no longer needed. What I will be
discussing in this essay is whether or not the exploitation of these workers was necessary in order to
improve quality of life.
The majority of skilled workers before the revolution lived in the countryside and had a nice quaint
life. An extract from The Making of the Working class notes an observer describing the living
conditions before the industrial revolution as their dwelling and small gardens clean and neat, all
the family well clad, the men with each a watch in their pocket, and the women dressed in their own
fancy, the Church crowded to excess every Sunday, every house well furnished with a clock in
elegant mahogany or fancy case. . . . Their little cottages seemed happy and contented
(Thompson,1966,p.269). This showed that before the industrial revolution the skilled workers such
as the weavers lived a happy content life, affording such luxuries ..each a watch in their pocket.. ...

The Influence Of Origen In The Book Of Galatians
Origen has showed influences throughout his book because of his allegorical method of
interpretation. Just how Paul had used allegorumenu in the book of Galatians 4:24, Origen had
recommended that the views of all scriptures grasp more than just literal and historical events. He
believes that there is a spiritual cause (Oikonomiai) in becoming closer to God. Origen had faith in
this because he wanted to turn against Gnosticism when it flourished. Origen knew that with the
right set of people, he would be able to offer an alternative to the Christian system. He introduces
this alternatives as God is the only creator, God the Son was born of the father and had created all
things including man whom was born a virgin, died and had risen from the dead. He also believed
the our spirit exist in free will and that we would be rewarded or punished after death.... Show more

Flesh being the obvious, Soul is to edifies, and Spiritual in God s hidden wisdom of a perfect
human being. For an example, in Origen book he states, the purpose of this was that man should
acquire it for himself by his own earnest efforts to imitate God, so while attaining perfection was
given to him in the beginning (pg 245). When Origen discusses this, he is saying that our world
is rationally governed and that we become to have superior forces that have both good and evil.
Humans are free to make their own choices but it is not easy when they have used all that power
and turned it into evil. He was a advocate of the idea from the Trinity calling the Christian s
confidence Father and Son and the Heavenly Soul . My interpretation from this is Orgien give a
measure of how important the Holy Spirit is, he assumes that a sin committed against the Son can be
forgiven but the sin against the Holy Spirit will not
Examples Of Donald Trump s Breach Of Contract
Trumps Breach of Contract In terms of business, contracts are really important, they are an
agreement between two or more parties to provide a product, perform a service, or commit an act.
There are many different types of contract which have different terms and conditions. These terms
and conditions are always enforced by law and breaking them can result in actions such as financial
penalties. Some examples of different business contracts are; partnership agreement, bill of sale,
independent contractor agreement, and property and equipment lease. In this short essay, we will
take a look at an article addressing a type of contract, then give a quick summary of the article, and
finally offer up recommendations relevant to the article. Summary As we know, there are so many...

The lawyers also made a comment on how Donald Trump is more than likely to share his
opinions. The judge found that there was no basis to break the 10 year lease in where Andres
was to open up a world class restaurant in the new Trump building. Mr. Andres was then forced to
pay compensation for breaching his contract. According to Lawyers.com, you cannot get out of a
contract just because you ve changed your mind. Unfortunately for Mr. Andres, he entered a
contract with someone who was publicizing himself with racial comments. This made Mr. Andres
change his mind and want to back out of the contract. However, he was legally bonded to the
contract and because he broke it he was at fault and had to pay compensation. Was this fair? In my
opinion it was not. Mr. Andres was in a lousy situation and I believe the action he took was
ethically correct. Because he chose to drop out of the contract he kept his reputation to his home
country safe. Which if you ask me, is more valuable than opening up a world class
Human Nature, By Jean Jacques Rousseau And Thomas Hobbes
The notion of human nature has always been historically debated. Explores, philosophers, and
writers have always come to argue on what is considered to be barbarism, savagery, and civilized.
These constructed categories have put a label on people who do not share the same ideas as one
another. These different views of human nature have come to propel change and have come to
revolutionized human history. Jean Jacques Rousseau, Michel de Montaigne, and Thomas Hobbesall
differ on their ideas of human nature, but they also share common ground. For some of these
men the practices of different cultures are categorized as savagery, and for others it has been
viewed as noble savagery. Their ideas however have allowed society to view different perspectives
of human nature. These perspectives have classified human nature as a way of life, or as an
obstacle to what is consider to be the good life. Their ethnographic resources provide a glimpse to all
the different cultures and their value to society and history.
Cannibalism in many Western societies is usually frown upon or illegal; however, for a tribe
located in Antarctic France which is now known as Brazil, cannibalism is considered to be a norm.
For many Western thinkers this cultural practice of cannibalism would be an act of savagery, but
for Michel de Montaigne this cultural practice is categorized as noble savagery. Montaigne reverses
the egocentric belief in the superiority of western culture in his work Of Cannibals. His

The Critique Of The Movie Amistad
This essay is going to be about the movie called Amistad. It is a 10 of December 1997 American
film directed by Steven Spielberg which was a very famous Hollywood director, based on a story
which happened in 1839 about some Spanish man in a ship called Amistad which had captured
many slaves to sell. This history of the movie was made in Connecticut in the coast were a case
occurred to save the slaves which had ended up in the united states, it was a hard case, but the case
was given to the liberty of the slaves, the case took around four years to be solved. Long time ago
a ship called Amistad, brought slaves all the way from Cuba to the United States of America on
the date of 1839. The ship called Amistad transported African slaves who had been sold as slaves in
Cuba. In Cuba there was like a huge concentration camp which had many slaves which were carried

Deep Sea Research Paper
The deep sea is home to many fascinating creatures that have yet to be explored by scientists for
their features. These creatures can be seen as special for the way they are able to survive in the
extreme sea environments. Three species, in particular, have interested scientists for their own
unique ways of adapting: the giant squid, the zombie worm, and the yeti crab. Their ways of
adaptations allow them to survive in the intense deep sea environments. First and foremost, every
species has different ways of adapting to the world around them. These simple adaptations allow
them to survive their extreme living environments. One creature has many features that contribute to
its living space. The giant squid is a worldwide squid that adapts... Show more content on

One of these creatures are the yeti crabs. These crabs live near the thermal vents at the bottom of
the deep sea. Their white color could be due to their obscured environment. There is a reason
these crabs are called yeti crabs . Yetis have hair, so this would represent the crab s distinct
features. As said in the article, these crabs are Dubbed yeti crabs for their hairy chests and legs,
these creatures are new to science (p.3). This has grown on the crabs over many years to adapt to
the thermal vents around its living space. The yeti crab lives in a mixed climate where it is very
hot and very cold at the same time. When these two temperatures collide, chemical reactions
produce an array of mineral compounds, which many organisms consider food (p.2). Animals such
as the yeti crab depend on chemistry rather than photosynthesis. Since these crabs are new to
science and new to the studies of scientists, they aren t sure but conjecture that mineral eating
bacteria might grow on the crabs hairs and that the crabs might scoop up the bacteria (p.3). This
differs from the other crabs in the world. Maybe the more the yeti crabs live near the thermal vents,
they will adapt even more and evolve
Time Is Money, Time Or Labors
It s in our nature to save whether it is money, time or labors. It has been continuing pattern for
generation after generation, and our generation is no exception. It does not matter how big or small
the company is its always innovating new ways to reduce the cost to produce goods, Total Cost
Minimization. In fact, cost minimization has been the motivation behind the way our world is today
and the things we have. Imagine if the Wright Brothers never invented the airplane we would still
be crossing rivers and ocean. Just like the airplane we have are always improving our life by
inventing new things to minimize cost.

In today s world the phrase time is money is becoming more of a reality as manufacturers are
looking to increase the quantity of products in lesser and lesser time. Over the years, people have
tried to rise to the solution to minimize the time for producing goods, but none of them actually
succeed. However, a wise man named Henry Ford re introduced a brilliant idea of Assembly Line,
which changed the very core of how manufacturers produce goods. An Assembly Line is a form
of production where product parts are added to the line in a specific order to produce a finished
product at the end of the line. The principle of The Assembly line is to increase the productivity at
a lower cost. The demand of goods in our developing world has been staggering. We need more
goods than we ever need as the population is sky high. Fortunately, we have a solution to
