(23) Stowage Bin

General
Teaching Points
1. Overhead stowage bins hold standard roll-aboard passenger bags.

The outboard stowage bins have an interface with:

2. There are large stowage bins outboard in premium and economy areas of - Indirect ceiling lights and sidewall lights
the passenger cabin.
- Passenger service units (PSU).

3. There can be large and medium center bins in the economy areas of the
passenger cabin. The indirect ceiling lights attach above the outboard stowage bins. The
sidewall lights are a part of the outboard PSU assemblies that connect to the
outboard stowage bins.

4. The stowage bin latch opens from the top or the bottom.

Each of the PSUs aligns directly with a stowage bin.

5. A red indicator shows at the edge of the latch when the latch is open.

Seals on the edges and sides of the stowage bins decrease vibration noise.

6. A snubber at each end of each overhead stowage bin slows bin movement.

Student Notes A latch on the front opens the stowage bin. A tool unlocks the emergency
System Description Section (SDS) release latch if the storage bin does not open normally.

Purpose

(2) Emergency Descent Devices

Teaching Points
1. An emergency descent device holds a safe descent rate for a flight crew
member as they go out and down the side of the airplane to the ground.

- Each device has an inertial reel with a friction brake.

2. There are 4 emergency descent devices in the flight deck ceiling.

Student Notes
Systems Description Section (SDS)

Purpose

The flight crew use the escape descent devices to get out of the airplane
during emergency conditions.

General

There are 4 emergency descent escape reels, one for each flight crew
member. The emergency escape descent devices attach to the flight deck
ceiling and are in a compartment near the flight deck overhead (crew escape)
door. The flight crew use the descent devices when they go out of the flight
deck through the overhead door. Each descent device has an inertial reel with
a brake that puts a limit on the speed of descent.
