Conditions: You are a member of a squad or team preparing for a tactical operation and must ensure the operability of your assigned M16-series
rifle or M4-series carbine. Some iterations of this task should be performed in MOPP 4.

Standards: Verify the M16/M4 is clear and conduct a function check to ensure that the weapon operates properly with the selector switch in each
position. All steps for the function check must be performed in sequence.

Special Conditions: None

WARNING
Always clear weapon before starting a function check.
Do not squeeze trigger until weapon has been cleared.
Ensure weapon is always pointed in a safe direction.

CAUTION
None

Remarks: None

Notes: A function check is the final step of maintaining your weapon. It is also performed any time the proper operation of a weapon is in question.
Stop a function check at any time the weapon does not function properly and turn in the malfunctioning weapon as per unit standing operating
procedures.

Performance Steps
1. Confirm the M16/M4 is clear.

2. Check weapon in SEMI firing mode.

a. Place selector lever on SAFE.


Note: If the weapon is not cocked, you cannot place the selector lever on SAFE.

b. Pull charging handle to rear and release.

c. Pull trigger.
Note: Hammer should not fall.

d. Place selector lever on SEMI.

e. Pull trigger.
Note: Hammer should fall.

f. Hold trigger to the rear and charge the weapon.

g. Release the trigger with a slow, smooth motion, until the trigger is fully forward.
Note: An audible click should be heard.

h. Pull trigger.
Note: Hammer should fall.

3. (M16A2, M16A4, and M4 only) Check weapon in BURST firing mode.

a. Place selector lever on BURST.

b. Charge weapon one time.

c. Squeeze trigger.
Note: Hammer should fall.

d. Charge weapon three times.

e. Hold trigger to the rear.

f. Release trigger.

g. Squeeze trigger.
Note: Hammer should fall.

4. (M16A3 and M4A1 only) Check weapon in AUTO firing mode.

a. Place the selector switch on AUTO.

b. Pull the charging handle to the rear, charging the weapon.

c. Squeeze the trigger.


Note: Hammer should fall.

d. Hold the trigger to the rear.

e. Charge the weapon again.

f. Fully release the trigger then squeeze it again.


Note: The hammer should not fall because it should have fallen when the bolt was allowed to move forward during the chambering and locking
sequences.

Evaluation Guidance: Score the Soldier GO if all performance measures are passed. Score the Soldier NO-GO if any performance measure is
failed. If the Soldier scores a NO-GO, show the Soldier what was done wrong and how to do it correctly.

Evaluation Preparation: Setup: Provide the Soldier with the equipment and materials described in the conditions statement.

Brief the Soldier: Tell the Soldier what is required to successfully complete the task by reviewing the conditions and standards. Stress the importance of
observing cautions, warnings, and dangers, as applicable.

Environment: Environmental protection is not just the law but the right thing to do. It is a continual process and starts with deliberate planning.
Always be alert to ways to protect our environment during training and missions. In doing so, you will contribute to the sustainment of our training
resources while protecting people and the environment from harmful effects. Refer to the current Environmental Considerations manual and the current
GTA Environmental-related Risk Assessment card.

Safety: In a training environment, leaders must perform a risk assessment in accordance with current Risk Management Doctrine. Leaders will
complete the current Deliberate Risk Assessment Worksheet in accordance with the TRADOC Safety Officer during the planning and completion of each
task and sub-task by assessing mission, enemy, terrain and weather, troops and support available-time available and civil considerations, (METT-TC).
Note: During MOPP training, leaders must ensure personnel are monitored for potential heat injury. Local policies and procedures must be followed
during times of increased heat category in order to avoid heat related injury. Consider the MOPP work/rest cycles and water replacement guidelines IAW
current CBRN doctrine.
