institutions expose students to and use the technology.
Artificial intelligence tools can help make global classrooms available to all including those who speak different
languages or who might have visual or hearing impairments. Presentation Translator is a free plug-in for
PowerPoint that creates subtitles in real time for what the teacher is saying. This also opens up possibilities for
students who might not be able to attend school due to illness or who require learning at a different level or on a
particular subject that isn't available in their own school. AI can help break down silos between schools and
traditional grade levels.

E9: Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the correct answer to each of the
questions.
THE VANISHING INVENTION
In 1998, a Valencian professor made an amazing claim. Professor Antonio Cervilla discovered how to use
water as a substitute for petrol. The scientist said that you could drive from Bilbao to Valencia on just half a litre
of water. His invention uses a molybdenum compound to break down water into hydrogen and oxygen. Unlike
other methods, no electricity is required and the reaction happens at atmospheric temperature. This impressive
technology is based on the way plant enzymes break down water. The use of molybdenum is the perfect choice
because, although rare, it is cheap and found all around the planet.
Since the claims were made, nothing more has been heard about this fabulous technology. There is no
explanation for the disappearance anywhere on the internet, apart from a list of similar inventions which have
also vanished. An inventor from the Philipines called Daniel Dingel developed a water-fuelled car but was
arrested and sentenced to 20 years in prison. If this technology were to become widely available, it would prove
disastrous for petrol station owners and would also save the planet from the impending environmental
catastrophes being caused by pollution.

I left school at fifteen. I was an academically bright lad who was urged by some of his teachers not to leave, but I
wanted out to see life, and I didn't want to reach beyond the expectation of the friends who left school with me. I
worked for a year in a laundry, as a van-boy delivering dry cleaning,
On turning sixteen I applied to be, and eventually began working as a trainee heating engineer with a medium-
sized company in East Belfast. The first months were boring. The work was not demanding but I found the
environment of the factory annoying. I remember my first week. I left the factory to meet up with a friend and I
realized that I had forgotten to collect my wages. My friend thought I was an idiot. After many months working
in the factory, I was sent off to college to study for my Certificate in Heating Engineering. I found the classroom
routine unpleasant and I remember feeling a sense of limitation. Five years of this- to end up as a heating
engineer and continue with that for the foreseeable future was not an exciting thought.
Although I had left school against the advice of my teachers I had, without telling anyone, tried to continue my
studies in literature at evening classes. It was a boring walk from one end of the city to another and to sit amongst
adults was confusing. I was the youngest in the class, so the companionship I knew at school was absent. I put up
with it for a short period. It was too long a walk on cold winter's nights and it was hard to concentrate on
Shakespeare with wet shoes and soaking trousers. So I carried on reading books and started writing poetry at
home.
By chance, I won some prizes and literary awards in national competitions. A young woman from a TV company
came to the college one day. She told me in the quiet of the corridor that I had won a national poetry award. I
stared at her in astonishment and disbelief. She wanted to make a short film about me, to which I said: 'No, I
couldn't do that? Not that I had any real excuse. I was just frightened. She eventually persuaded me that I should
do it the following day.

The 21st century has become another important century for inventions and discoveries. We are only in the 2nd
decade of this century currently but we have already witnessed many big innovations that have drastically
changed our way of living. Bluetooth technology, broadband internet, artificial heart, genetic engineering, virtual
reality, 3D printing are some to name a few. These inventions are changing the way we live, do our things and
communicate with others. Even though some of these developments are in the early stage of innovation, they
have a more sophisticated and promising future. Social media is one of the most important aspects that has
affected each person in this modern time.
According to Heidi Cohen, Social Media are the platforms that enable the interactive web by engaging users to
participate in, comment on and create content as means of communicating with their social graph, other users and
the public. The power of social media has changed most of the things in our daily life. Social media has
revolutionized and completely changed the way we send and receive information. It is more interactive, can be
done in real-time and uses a wide number of media like text, audio, video, pictures, graphics and more. With
these sites, sending and receiving messages offline and in real-time, audio and video chatting, sharing pictures,
video and text, going "Live” to many audiences, meeting old friends and making new ones have revolutionized
our way of establishing connections with others.
There are also negative sides to the innovation of social media and its usage. An increase in cybercrime, invasion
of privacy, security threats, etc. are some of the issues associated with social networks. But at the same time,
social networks are working to cope with the increasing problems that arise with the improper use of it. With
more and more sophistication and versatility of use, social media have undoubtedly proved to be a boon to
connectivity and social interaction between people in this age of communication and information technology.

questions.
The Advantages of Using Wi-Fi on Your Smartphone
Wi-Fi is a method for devices such as smartphones to connect wirelessly to the Internet using radio waves.
Connecting to the Internet using Wi-Fi requires a hotspot, but it is always faster than the 3G cellular networks
which smartphones can also use to connect, and occasionally faster than 4G. Using Wi-Fi when it is available
can also prove to be cheaper and make your phone run more efficiently in the long run than relying on cellular
networks.
When you use a Wi-Fi network to access the Internet from your phone, the data usage does not count against
your bundled data. Mobile providers often allocate a certain amount of data for free each month and charge you a
fee for any data usage beyond this. By connecting via Wi-Fi wherever it is available, you can save your bundled
data for situations when you might not be close to any Wi-Fi hotspots.
In many situations, your speed using a strong, dedicated Wi-Fi connection is faster than that of using your mobile
network. It is very noticeable when transferring larger files. If you need to download large files or stream media
to your smartphone in a hurry, it is much better to do so via Wi-Fi.
Battery life is extremely important for smartphones because you will not be able to connect to the Internet or use
certain functions such as the camera flash if your battery is too low. Using Wi-Fi to connect to the Internet
drains less battery life than using a mobile network, especially in situations where the cellular coverage
fluctuates. Since Wi-Fi is generally faster than using mobile networks, you will also not spend as much time
transferring the data, which further decreases battery usage.
1. The following are the advantages of using Wi-Fi on your smartphone EXCEPT that _____.
A. it does not need a hotspot to connect all your mobile devices
B. it is faster than the 3G cellular networks
C. it is cheaper than using the 3G networks
D. it makes your phone run more efficiently in the long run
2. By using Wi-Fi, you __________.
A. can use all your bundled data for free
B. can use a certain amount of data for free each month
C. may stay under the data capacity allocated by mobile providers
D. save your bundled data for situations when you use a Wi-Fi network
3. A Wi-Fi connection offers ___________.
A. better large files B. faster smartphones C. no need for hurry D. better speeds
4. Using Wi-Fi offers longer battery life because_________.
A. you will be able to connect to other devices when your battery is low
B. it requires less time with the same task than using mobile networks
C. the Internet harms the battery life so much
D. it requires so little energy while the cellular coverage fluctuates
5. The word “drains” in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to __________.
A. improves B. saves C. increases D. reduces
Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions.
It is often held that technology in general does little to help family relationships as, in many cases, family
members are more interested in their smartphones and the TV than they are in each other. Before smartphones,
the TV was blamed the most for breakdowns in communication between parents and children. It was argued that
'the box' stopped them from talking to each other, and clashes between family members over what programmes
to watch created barriers and caused resentment.
However, TV programmes can be both informative and entertaining. They often provide topics for family
members to discuss, bringing them closer together rather than driving them further apart. What is more, twenty-
first century families do not need to watch the same programme at the same time. The fact that people can watch
what they want results in more time for families to be together rather than less.
The smartphone has taken over from the TV as the major reason for a lack of communication between family
members. Parents often do not see why their children spend so much time online and fail to see the importance of
having an online identity while most teens feel their online image is part of who they are.
They often criticise the amount of time their children spend online rather than attempting to understand why they
do it. In fact, adults are often not very good examples themselves. Who has not witnessed a table at a restaurant
where all the family members are silently focused on their mobile devices?
Broadly speaking, smartphones do have some negative effects on family relationships. This technology is still
relatively new, so many families have not yet learned how to deal with it. Parents and children should discuss
how they use technology to help them all make the most of technology instead of blaming it for their problems.

create electricity very cheaply when someone steps on it!
The design of the floor works very well when it is used in very busy areas. And the reason is that a lot of energy
is created simply because of the large numbers of people walking across the floor.
The floor can have other uses too; one of them is to record how many people visit a shopping center. This kind of
information is very useful for shop owners because very often they want to know at which times of days they
have the highest number of customers, so the next time you visit shopping center, have a careful look at the floor

There are certain inventions and creations that people are aware of every day. There are, however, very few
creations that we use our whole lives without ever thinking about or even seeing. But that is exactly what the
London sewers are. Their creator, Joseph Bazalgette, may be remembered as more of an engineer than an
inventor, but what he developed in London - the largest and most forward-thinking sewage system the world had
ever seen - changed life in the city completely. There was a sewage system in place beforehand, but all it did was
transfer waste straight into the Thames. It was basically one massive open sewer pipe. By all accounts, it created
a truly awful smell, reaching its peak during the Great Stink of 1858. Even more worryingly, it caused serious
health problems, such as cholera, because it contaminated the city's drinking supply. Something had to be done,
and Bazalgette was the man to do it. His solution was phenomenal: a new waste system that would divert the
sewage eastwards away from the river and pump it out to sea. By 1865 most of the system was working, the main
intercepting sewers used 318 million bricks and measured over 80 miles in length. To do all that work above
ground would have been one thing, but to create it underground was something else altogether. The intricate
maze of sewer pipes more than 100 years old was just unbelievable. And the most amazing thing is that it still
functions today. The reason is that when Bazalgette designed the tunnels, he estimated how much the population
of London would increase in the next 100 years and worked out how large the tunnels would need to be to meet
the needs of the future and keep the system flowing, which is why the sewers are still in working order today,
and why in our eyes it should be seen as a huge inventing achievement.

Try to imagine what life would be like if there were no electric lights, no television, or no cars. What if you had
no running water to take a shower and no refrigerator to keep your food cold? Life would be tough without these
great inventions.
Since ancient times, people have been inventing new machines, materials, and ways of doing things. The people
who come up with new things are called inventors. Sometimes an inventor makes an invention to solve a
problem. Sometimes an inventor discovers something new by accident.
Everyone probably has his or her favorite inventions. One great invention was the printing press. A German
named Johannes Gutenberg in the 1400s invented a press that made it easy to print books. Books became much
more common after the invention of the printing press. The books helped other inventors make new things.
The invention of the steam engine around 1700 led to the Industrial Revolution. Inventors made many new
machines that were powered by steam engines. They invented locomotives, steamboats, and all kinds of factory
machines.
Another great invention, the internal combustion engine, led to the invention of automobiles in the late 1800s.
Inventors made better and better internal combustion engines. These are the engines we use today in cars, trucks,
buses, and airplanes.
The discovery of electricity led to many wonderful inventions. Many scientists studied electricity. An American
inventor named Thomas A. Edison invented the electric lamp, phonograph, and other things that ran
on electricity in the late 1800s.
New things are invented today faster than ever before. Inventors are making new kitchen appliances, toys,
computers, video games, telephones, and all kinds of other things.
