The Legend of Lake Toba

A long time ago, in the heart of Sumatra, there lived a humble farmer named Toba. One
sunny day, while fishing in a nearby river, he caught a large, beautiful golden fish. As he
prepared to take it home, the fish suddenly spoke, pleading for its life. To his shock, the fish
transformed into a lovely woman. She revealed that she had been cursed and would marry
Toba if he promised never to reveal her true origin.

Toba agreed, and they lived happily as husband and wife. After some time, they were blessed
with a son named Samosir. However, Samosir grew into a mischievous and lazy boy, often
disobeying his father. One day, while Toba was working on the farm, he asked Samosir to
bring him lunch. But the boy delayed, and when he finally arrived, the food was cold. In
anger, Toba scolded him, and in his frustration, he called Samosir “the son of a fish.”

The moment those words left his mouth, dark clouds gathered in the sky. His wife appeared
before him, heartbroken. Toba had broken his promise. She told him that the earth would
soon punish them. Suddenly, rain poured from the sky and the river overflowed. Water
covered the entire valley, creating a vast lake. The woman disappeared into the water, and the
hill where Samosir had stood became an island.

That lake is now known as Lake Toba, and the island in its center is Samosir Island, a
reminder of the legend that lives on to this day.
