IEC61850 File Types

The document outlines various IEC61850 file types used in substation automation, including ICD, CID, SSD, SCD, IID, and SED. Each file type serves a specific purpose, such as defining IED capabilities, configurations, and system specifications. The IID and SED file types were introduced in IEC 61850 Edition 2 to facilitate project-specific configurations and system exchanges.

IEC61850 File Types :

IED Capability Description (ICD) : The ICD file is supplied by the manufacturer and defines the
complete capability range of an IED.

Configured IED Description (CID) : contains the complete configuration for a single IED. This
file is usually be downloaded to the IED as part of the final device configuration.

System Specification Description (SSD) : The SSD file contains the complete specification of
the substation automation system, including the single line diagram for the substation and its
functionalities (logical nodes).

Substation Configuration Description (SCD) : contains the IED configurations of the whole
substation or parts of it. It usually contains the configured IEDs, communication setup, and
relations between the IED.

Instantiated IED Description (IID) : The IID file defines the configuration of an IED for a specific
project, providing a data exchange format to connect the IED configurator and the system
configurator.

System Exchange Description (SED) : The SED file can be considered a subset of an SCD file
with additional engineering rights for each IED and ownership of all SCL data. It is used to
exchange system configurations between di erent projects, describing the interfaces of one
project to be used by another project.

Note - The IID and SED types were introduced with IEC 61850 Edition 2.
