2. Legitimatiebewijs
• From the age of 14, all people in the Netherlands are required by law to carry a geldig
legitimatiebewijs (= valid proof of identity) at all times.
• This law applies to all people, regardless of their nationality, and whether they have a
verblijfsvergunning (= residence permit) or are tourists.

• Three types of legitimatiebewijs are officially valid in the Netherlands:

1) paspoort 2) identiteitskaart 3) rijbewijs

• Both an identiteitskaart (also called: ID-kaart) and a Dutch rijbewijs (= driving licence)
are small plastic cards. The first has multiple colours, the other is pink.

• An identity card is similar to the first page of a passport.


• But whereas a passport is a valid travel document all over the world, an identity card is
only valid within Europe, plus Turkey, Georgia, Tunisia and Jordan (exceptions: Belarus,
Russia and Ukraine).

• In general, after moving to the Netherlands, you can use a foreign driving licence to drive a
car for half a year.
• Only in some cases, you can exchange a foreign driving licence for a Dutch one.
• Mostly, you need to obtain a Dutch license by passing the rijexamen (= driving test).
• After passing the driving test, a Dutch driving licence isn’t valid until you have picked it up.
• To obtain your Dutch driving licence, you need to show another valid proof of identity.

• All three documents have a (colour) photo of the person and their personal BSN number
(Burger Service Nummer = citizen service number or national identification number).
• A range of (digital) features should prevent forgery.

• In special cases, certain other official documents can also be a temporary proof of identity.
• For instance, if you are an asielzoeker (= asylum seeker), a vluchteling (= refugee), or if
you are stateloos (=stateless).

• In several situations, one is obliged to show a legitimatiebewijs. For example, if asked to


do so by the politie (= police), or if you want to open a bankrekening (= bank account)
with a Dutch bank.
