SUGAR CANE
THE SWEETEST CROP IN INDIA
I NTRODUCTION
TO SUGARCANE (SACCHARUM
OFFICINARUM)
Sugarcane is a tall trophical plant
mainly grown in tropical and subtropical
regions with ample moisture and
warmth
It is mainly grown for sugar production
Also used for jaggery, molasses and
biofuel
India is the second largest producer of
sugarcane in the world
CLIMATIC
REQUIREMENT
FOR SUGARCANE
Temperature :
Sugarcane grows best between 21° to
27° which supports maximum
photosynthesis and yield
Growth is active above 20°c;
temperature below this significantly
reduce photosynthesis and
development
Extremely low or frost like temperature
are harmful for the crop production

CLIMATIC
REQUIREMENT
FOR SUGARCANE
Rainfall
Requires moderate to high rainfall : 75-
150 cm annually and it is best suited
for areas with well distributed rainfall
75-150 cm water is required because it
provides enough moisture and ensure
vegetative growth , and minimize the
risks of both drought and flood stress

AREA GROWN
SUGARCANE
Area where sugarcane mainly is grown is
Uttar Pradesh , Bihar , Punjab , Haryana ,
Uttarakhand, maharastra ,Karnataka etc
Sugarcane is mainly grown in tropical
and sub-tropical regions because these
areas offer the ideal temperature,
moisture, sunlight, soil, and growing
period that this high-demand, water-
intensive crop needs. These zones allow
for high yield, better sugar content, and
sustainable production.
SOIL REQUIRED
FOR PRODUCTION OF SUGARCANE
Sugarcane grows best in deep, fertile, and
well-drained soils.
The most suitable types are alluvial soil
(found in northern India) and black soil
(found in Maharashtra and Karnataka) due
to their high fertility and moisture
retention.
Red and lateritic soils can also support
sugarcane with proper fertilization.
Loamy soil, which is rich and well-balanced,
is ideal for root development.
However, saline, alkaline, or sandy soils are
unsuitable as they lack nutrients and
water-holding capacity.
LARGEST
PRODUCER IN
INDIA
OF SUGARCANE
Uttar Pradesh is the largest producer of
sugarcane in India. It contributes nearly
40% of the country’s total sugarcane
production.
The state has fertile alluvial soil, a
favorable climate with moderate rainfall,
and an abundant supply of water from
rivers like the Ganga.
The farmers here follow traditional and
scientific farming methods, and there are
many sugar mills located close to the
farms, which makes processing easier.
These factors together make Uttar Pradesh
the top sugarcane-producing state in India.
LARGEST
COUNTRY
PRODUCER
OF SUGARCANE
Brazil is the world’s largest sugarcane
producer . Contributes over 35% of global
production
WHY BRAZIL IS LARGEST PRODUCE
1. Ideal tropical climate with high temperature
and good rainfall.
2. Large land area suitable for sugarcane
farming .
3. Highly mechanized agriculture and modern
techniques.
4. Strong focus on research and innovation in
farming.
5. Efficient use of sugarcane for sugar + ethanol
(biofuel)
