India has two main coastal plains: the Eastern Coastal Plains and the Western Coastal Plains. The
Eastern Coastal Plains are on the east side of India, between the Bay of Bengal and the Eastern
Ghats. The Eastern Coastal Plains are divided into three parts: the Circar Coast, the Utkal Coast,
and the Coromandel Coast. The Coromandel Coast is known as the "land of temples" because it
has many temples. The Eastern Coastal Plains are important for agriculture, fishing, and trade.
They have fertile land for growing crops like rice and sugarcane. The plains also have a lot of
fish, which is important for the fishing industry.

The Western Coastal Plains are on the west side of India, between the Arabian Sea and the
Western Ghats. The Western Coastal Plains are divided into three parts: the Canara Coast, the
Konkan Coast, and the Malabar Coast. The Eastern Coastal Plains are wider than the Western
Coastal Plains because rivers like the Godavari, Krishna, and Kaveri have formed deltas there.
The Western Coastal Plains are narrower. The Eastern Coastal Plains have many lakes, like the
Kolleru Lake, which is in the delta region of the Godavari and Krishna Rivers. The Eastern Coastal
Plains also have lagoons, like the Chilka Lake and the Pulicat Lake.

The Eastern Coastal Plains are important for India's economy. They have big ports that help with
trade and transport. The Eastern Coastal Plains also have many industries that make things like
chemicals, fertilizers, automobiles, and amplifiers. The Eastern Coastal Plains have roads and
railway tracks that connect major cities.

1. What is the Coromandel Coast known for? (1)

2. Give two examples of lakes found in the Eastern Coastal Plains? (1)
3. How are eastern coastal plains helpful for the Indian economy? (2)
