According to Jean-Luc Marion, the concept of love has been underrated, as its
definition is commonly reduced to one similar to charity: intense craving, selfless
empathy, rational love, and irrational passion. As it is an abstract concept, it can be easily
described using literary techniques but doesn’t conceptualize the feeling. On the other
hand, science grants specific and detailed explanations of its concepts, which is why
philosophy rejects its old definition of “the love of wisdom”.
Love as a concept is usually related to passion itself, which is interpreted by the
ego’s being, which is rational, but even so, can oppose this by repressing the erotic
instance. This last concept acknowledges that love and desire exist beyond the constraints
of reason and metaphysical definitions and it’s a crucial part of an empathetic being (such
as a human). Based on the rationality that philosophy consists of, love can be considered
madness, as it gives sense to nonsense while having rationality.
Besides, love is not only a concept to be defined, but it has a deeper meaning
depending on the context it’s used for. For example, during marriage, love works as a
base to keep together two people for as long as possible. It also works as the first basis of
philosophy, as to know we must first have the desire to comprehend as in: Ï love to
understand, so I love to comprehend”. This means that love isn’t just a metaphysical
concept, rather than a cause-action.
