The Vow - Short Story
It was supposed to be just another night - until the moment everything changed.
They were driving home after dinner when the car crash happened. He barely survived, but she fell
into a comatose state, leaving doctors to keep her under observation. The impact of the accident not
only broke bones but also turned our lives upside down.
The doctors warned that there was no guaranteed recovery. But he stayed patient, visiting her every
day, whispering intimate words in the hopes she could hear. The intensity of his love never faded.
Weeks passed. The swelling on her head began to subside. One morning, she opened her eyes-but
something was off. She looked at him with a non-threatening, distant gaze. She didn't recognize
him. She had completely forgotten everything - even their love.
That was the defining moment. He had to make a choice: let go, or fight for their past.
He brought old photos, music she used to like, even her favorite sort of chocolate. Slowly, she
began to respond. One day, she noticed the ring on her finger and asked, "Did I say yes to this?"
He smiled. "You did."
As her memory returned, so did her questions. "Who are you? Why do I feel like I owe you
something?"
He answered with patience and a calm, non-threatening voice. "You don't owe me anything. You're
here, and that's enough."
She began to see glimpses of their old compatibility - the way they laughed, the songs they would
pick together. But she still struggled. Some memories felt twisted, and the past seemed like a
dream.
He took her to the place they made their vow, the purpose behind everything. There, she broke
down, overwhelmed.
"I feel like I've stayed in a fleabag version of my life," she said, laughing through tears. "But maybe it
can get better."
With time, she began to heal. They started over. He had to allow her the space to fall in love again.
And she did.
In the end, when people doubted their story, he would just smile and say, "It's not a claim. It's a
promise - one I made the day I saw her and said: I'll never leave."
