PROJECT 5: OLD-TOWN CONSERVATION PROJECT

66 65 Client Proposal
68
70 68
The developer has acquired a site at the junction of Ndia Kuu Street and Thika Street in Old Town, Mombasa, and plans to build an environmentally
71 sustainable Swahili commercial building. The site is on plot number 02 and plot number 70 and the developer wants the new design to preserve the

71
77 historical and urban qualities of Swahili architecture. The two sites have an alleyway in-between, which should be accommodated in the design.

Conceptualization
21 99 98
The Project’s Goal is to preserve the architectural constants found in Old Town Mombasa. These constants include Traditional building Materials i.e. Coral
97
Brick, Decorated Balconies, Swahili Doors, Bazaars, Straight staircases, and High thermal mass walls.
A Narrow Courtyard is put in the building to help with ventilation and avoid double-banked spaces. The Narrow Courtyard brings a similar effect as the
Kichochoro, it keeps the Courtyard shaded. The Façade is Plain and Simple, with no recessions or complex massing. The only decoration on the Façades are
the balconies and the Carved Doors.
