Moment Resisting Column Base Plates
⚫ Column base plate is designed for an axial load and a
relatively small bending moment such that the resultant
load falls between the column flanges
⚫ The width and length of the plate are assumed, after
which the pressures underneath the plate are calculated
and compared with the permissible value
⚫ If the pressures are unsatisfactory, the dimensions are
changed and the pressures recalculated, until the values
are satisfactory.
⚫ The moment in the plate is calculated, and the plate
thickness is determined.
⚫ The critical section for bending is assumed to be at the
center of the flange on the side where the compression is
highest (can also be assumed that the point of maximum
moment is located at some other point, such as at the
face of the flange or the center of the anchor bolt)
