I.DEFINE THE FOLLOWING:

2. Alliance – An agreement between countries.

3. Armistice – Official agreement between enemies to end a war.

4. Concentration camp – A prison where people were starved and tortured.

II. Answer the following questions.

Q1. Which incident led to the First World War?

Ans :- On 28 June 1914 Archduke of Austria – Hungary was assassinated by a

Serbian. Soon Austria declared war on Serbia. As most countries had already

formed alliances, they joined in to protect their allies.

Q2. List the terms of the Treaty of Versailles.

Ans:- The main terms of the Treaty of Versailles were as follows :-


1. Germany would have to pay a heavy fine.
2. It could not increase its military forces.
3. Some of its territory were to be occupied by the Allied Powers.

Q3. Who was Hitler? How was he responsible for the Second World?

Ans:- Hitler was the Chancellor of Germany. His ambition to turn Germany into a
. superpower plunged the world into the Second World War.

Q4. How was Japan finally forced to surrender?

Ans:- In August, the USA dropped atom bombs on two Japanese cities; Hiroshima
. and Nagasaki. This forced Japan to surrender, bringing the Second World War
. to an end.
III. Think and Answer

1. Why did India fight on the side of Britain during the two World Wars?

Ans:- India supported Britain in the hope that Britain would grant her self - government
. after the war.
