Estimating Informal settlers in the Philippines
11th National Convention on Statistics (NCS)
EDSA Shangri La Hotel
October 4 5, 2010
ESTIMATING INFORMAL SETTLERS IN THE PHILIPPINES
In the Housing Backlog Study commissioned by the HUDCC, the Consultants prepared the estimates
of Informal Settlers in the Philippines. According to the Spatial Statistics of
Informal Settlers in the Philippines component of the Study, informal settler families reached an
estimated 550,771 households as of August 1, 2007. This is based on the extrapolation made using
the 2000 Census of Population and Housing (CPH) and the 2007 Census of
Population. The study showed that the highest concentration of informal settlers was in
Quezon City, having more than 90 thousand households. Far second are Rizal in ... Show more

Moreover, UDHA also distinguishes potential housing beneficiaries from professional squatters and
squatting syndicates (Section 27) and new squatters (Section 44) who occupy the area after March
31, 1992.
The identification of homeless and underprivileged/socialized housing beneficiary or more broadly
informal settlers in UDHA must take the following into consideration several aspects:
location in urban and urbanizable areas family income non ownership of housing facilities elsewhere
in the Philippines occupancy in makeshift dwelling units security of tenure location of dwelling
(danger areas, public spaces, government infrastructure projects, private land) not a member of a
squatting syndicate not a professional squatter the business of squatter housing for profit or gain
occupancy of the land before March 31, 1992
To this end, the LGUs and the NHA conduct censuses on specific areas that involve physical survey
of the area, tagging of every structure, mapping and household listing, ownership of structure, tenure
arrangements (rental, sharing arrangements, absentee holdings), as well family composition, source
of income, education. Censuses of informal settlers identify all households and even families, as
well as structure owners, tenants, sharers, and other occupants, especially if the area will be cleared
of structures for
Farewell, My Darling Lua
Lua Prologue Lua, my dear Lua. I wish I could be here with you now, but you will never see me
again. Do you remember the bad men I told you about? Once you have read this letter, they will
have killed me. Please cherish this letter but, sadly, you will not remember me. Take this tablet,
and keep it safe. Make sure no one ever finds it. I love you, my darling son. Farewell. I will be
watching over you, always. Mother LUA Chapter One LUA. MOTHER HAD given that name to
him. When all others would call him by another, he still remembered Lua. Kanalorla, that was the
name given to him, wasn t it? That was his name. Prince Kanalorla of Cadirawyn.Lua sat hugging
one knee to his chest as he passed the small, bronze tablet between his slender fingers. He stared
intently at the intricate designs that circled the edges of the rounded disk. He wondered what
each symbol meant. They were all different and all beautiful. Some looked like a raging fire,
consuming everything in its path; while some looked like a gentle breeze, delicately drifting
through the air. He could never fathom the meaning of this pointless slice of metal. The small boy
held an age worn paper between his fingers of his other hand. This paper held the letter from a
woman he knew only as Mother. Whether or not this stranger was in fact his real mother, he did not
know. No one seemed to know who his mother was. Not even his half sister, Dirala, knew the
birthmother of her half brother. Someone had once
The Impact Of Public Transport On Rural And Sustainable...
4. Financial Analysis
4.1 Introduction
Today the role of public transport is perceived very seriously in terms of urban mobility and
sustainable development, but even though the financial resources available are insufficient.
Acquiring appropriate financing mechanisms is not only imperative for the development of transport
system but also for the holistic growth of urban pockets.
The local government all over the world face financial constraints due to disparity between costs and
revenues. Many urban planners think that revenues cannot be covered from fare box alone. Indian
cities are also facing the same challenges. But due to some funding through JnNURM the city
officials find some relief in procuring buses of high standards like present in developed countries.
There are two types of costs associated with transport system: one is capital cost and other is
operating cost. Capital cost constitutes of infrastructural support, procurement of buses, and
construction of bus stations. Whereas operating cost includes expenses incurred in fuel,
technological services, salaries to operators of buses, and upgrading buses to better quality with time.
Hence financial aspect takes a big role, because without investment of money, a huge infrastructural
project is not possible. Other dilemma which urban planners face is setting correct fares in order to
attract maximum users and save the system to run into losses.
In this section of my case study, I focus upon the financial burden of
Thomas Edison And The Light Bulb Essay
Everyone in their lifetime has heard the name Thomas Edison at least once. However, if you
asked those same people why Thomas Edison was so famous, ninety percent of the time they
would tell you it was because he invented the light bulb, and each of them would be completely
wrong. Thomas Edison did not invent the light bulb; in fact, someone had the idea for it almost one
hundred years before Mr. Edison was even born. To invent something means to come up with the
idea in the first place, as well as to actually carry it out.
In this paper I will give you insights into the life of Thomas Edison and explain why people get
confused in thinking the light bulb was his idea. He also had several other interesting experiments,
and we will take a look at what people thought of them. I believe Thomas Edison is one of the
greatest minds that have ever existed on planet earth, and the rest of this paper will be devoted to
showing you why this is true.
If one stopped and thought about all the amazing and wonderful inventions that this world has ever
seen, what would be number one on that list? Most people in today s world would probably say
items that they use on a daily basis. If we made a list of what some people might say, it might include
such things as automobiles, their new iPhone, advancements in medicine, heaters, air conditioning,
power tools, gaming systems, IPods, etc., and the list could go on and on.
Though we could list thousands of inventions that have been truly

Verizon Communications, Inc.
2014 SEC 10 K Annual Reports Analysis Project
Executive Summary
The company I selected to research is Verizon Communications Inc., an American
telecommunications company. I chose Verizon because I am a current subscriber to all their major
residential services from phone to internet and FIOS. Verizon is a global leader in delivering
broadband and other wireless and wireline communications services to consumer, business,
government, and wholesale customers. Verizon also provides converged communications,
information and entertainment services over America s most advanced fiber optic network, and
delivers integrated business solutions to customers in more than 150 countries. Verizon employs a
diverse workforce of 178,300. They currently sit at number 16 on the Fortune 500 list.
My objective in researching Verizon s financial statements was gaining a better understanding of the
company s short and long term goals. As I embarked on this journey, I reviewed the requirements,
after selecting Verizon, and subsequently realized that my choice was not a traditional manufacturing
entity; as such I focused my analysis on key types of financial ratios. My analysis will discuss
Verizon s performance as it relates to Asset Productivity, Financial Strength, and Profitability.
Through my research, paired with the course s content my initial impression of this project changed,
as did my appreciation for the role
A closer Look at Benny Morris One State, Two States
With an uncanny ability to convey his argument in a concise and precise manner, Benny Morris s
book One State, Two States quite comprehensively discredits the belief that a so called One State
solution may bring peace to the region between the Mediterranean and the Jordan. As an academic
and a professor of history at the Ben Gurion University in Israel, one should be able to hold Morris s
text in high regard for his academic integrity. Unfortunately, it could be argued that to do so would
be a staunch mistake, as he strongly evokes subjectivity and bias in his narrative. With a primary
focus on the perspective of his own nation, Morris draws on a large number of source material and
quotes, but appears to have left strong Arab Palestinian... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The simple objective of Morris s book is to argue that Arab rejectionism is so deeply entrenched in
the psyche of Arabs, that only the most ignorant and unrealistic of minds could believe that
Palestinians would ever concede to a state consisting merely of the Gaza and the West Bank.
According to Morris, this is partly due to the mutual exclusivity in the mindsets and value systems
of the Israeli Jewish society and that of the Palestinian Muslim Society. However, instead of placing
blame for the rejectionist sentiment on both Jews and Muslims alike, Morris appears to pin the
blame mostly on the latter s ability to compromise. He says, The idea of sharing Palestine either
through a division of the country into two states, one Jewish, the Other Arab, or through a unitary
binational entity, based on political party between the two communities is alien to the Muslim Arab
mindset (Morris, 2009, 188).
Morris structures his book in three, rather long chapters; beginning with a thorough analysis of the
One State solution, and how the idea has come to fruition in modern times. He starts with Tony Judt
s account, who wrote an article advocating for a single state to be shared between the conflicting
Israelis and Palestinians. According to Morris, the Arab nationalists are the only blockade currently
standing between the creation of a pure Jewish nation, on what some believe to
Compare And Contrast The Klondike Gold Rush
Comparison/Contrast: The Klondike Gold Rush The Klondike Gold Rush had begun on August
16, 1869, when Yukon area Indians had found gold in Rabbit Creek, near a town named Dawson
in Canada. Word of the discovery of gold in the Klondike hadn t reached other regions in the world
till July 17, 1897, when gold rushers finally set off to go to the vast Yukon territory. According to
estimation, there was around 100,000 gold seekers who decided to test their luck on acquiring some
of the valuable gold, which had been literally coming in by the tons! In the end, only 30,000 gold
seekers had successfully reached the Yukon territory. Unfortunately, many of these gold seekers
whom tried to reach the Yukon territory had faced many complications, which... Show more content

Out of the two trails, the White Pass Trail contained a few more outlaws, more corruption, and the
slopes were overall less steep compared to the Chilkoot Trail. The Chilkoot Trail had a fewer
number of outlaws who were trying to steal the gold seekers belongings and corrupt them to
spend money on absolutely nothing, but this trail had many steeper inclines of the slopes, which
brought forth a lot of trouble for the gold seekers who weren t prepared. Many faced
complications with malnutrition, hunger in general, and death. No matter what trail the gold
seekers had taken to get to the Yukon territory, it was certainly dangerous in all circumstances.
Within To Build a Fire, the gold seeker or man who is portrayed as the main character in the story
is appearing to have difficulties with what nature or the landscape was throwing at him. Alike in
both reality and the story, the freezing cold temperatures were a constant threat to the gold seekers
who may have been unprepared for what they might have expected. The reality part of the extreme
cold is adequate to how the extreme cold was described in the story because in both references it
was in the negatives somewhere between 20 degrees Fahrenheit in temperature and well below 50
degrees Fahrenheit. Besides the extreme cold, both the reality and the story comparison can be
Winnie The Pooh Movie Vs Book
A.A. Milne s story, Winne the Pooh, has caught the eyes of children for several years now. Milne
originally wrote the story in 1926, as a bed time story to his son, Christopher Robin Milne, which
is a character in the story. The moral of the story was to always have fun with your friends. Walt
Disney bought the rights to the story in 1966, later making a movie in 1977 called The Many
Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. The moral of the movie was that your friends are always there for
you. Walt Disney pretty much stayed true to the original story but did make some minor changes.
Some of the changes him and his team made were the heffalump story, Winnie the Pooh s character,
and Eeyore s personality. Even though these may seem like small changes, the moral of the story
has changed a slight. Milnes and Disney s story of Winnie the Pooh are very similar but have some
differences.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Which is the same as the book but what Pooh doesn t see is Rabbit wants him out so desperately.
Rabbit constantly is trying to get him out and complaining about it. The book is similar but not to
that extent. In the movie, the Gopher starts out by saying, there he goes, he s sailing clear out of the
book, we turn the page! Eeyore says Stuck again Christopher Robin then said Don t worry Pooh we
ll get you out! Pooh says No hurry, take your time! (The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh
1977). Pooh is in another situation just like that. All that happens in the movie is Pooh getting
into situations. He ends up getting out of all of them. In the book, Pooh is able to get out of
things and enjoy life. The last difference that is really noticeable is Eeyore s personality. In Milne
s version, Eeyore is a sad donkey. His birthday comes around and no one notices. Pooh asks him
what is wrong and he says it s his birthday. Pooh ends up telling everyone so they can get him a
gift. One by one, they bring Eeyore a
Reign Of Terror Dbq Essay
DBQ: Reign of Terror What would start as an act to protect people from the abuses of the
government, would turn into one of the most oppressive periods of French History, giving it the
name: Reign of Terror. King Louis XIV s expensive and unnecessary war debts and lavish
expenditures left his citizens starving and without a platform. In order to solve this, Louis XIV
raised taxes, making the very mistake of King George III that led to the American Revolution. The
social classes were called to reach a solution, but as always reached a stalemate. Delegates of the
Estates General then took for themselves their natural right to dissention, and created the National
Assembly. Regarding the right to dissent, the right to one s own religious views,... Show more

Moreover, Document C relays that, The Counterrevolutionaries included some members of the
aristocracy, priests, peasants, and townspeople. (Document C) The leaders of the Reign of Terror had
a goal to punish the emigres and label all dissenters as enemies of their peaceful rule. The diversity of
the countermovement shows that not just the emigres are rebelling against their abolition of
superiority, and that all groups are oppressed unjustly.Withal, Document D concludes that, At this
time, counterrevolutionary activity had been increasing for more than a year. This official is
reporting that soldiers already sent by the government have failed to stop the rabble and he is writing
for more help. To make matters even more unsettling, Prussians were invading at the same time from
the north. The large number of dissenters shows that Revolutionary rule is widely abusive, and is
therefore unjust. (Document D) Similarly, Document F also reports that, Historians estimate that
16,000 people were guillotined during the Reign of Terror. (Document F) The penalty of death is
usually reserved for the most serious crimes. It cannot be that 16,000 people of the
Counterrevolution are deserving of immoral public humiliation on top of death, making the
methodology of the Reign of terror false. The oppression of the just Counterrevolution shows
